Tufts AI Literacy Forums Fall 2024

Over the past two years, generative AI tools have found their way into the spaces where we learn, teach, and work. This series creates an opportunity to discuss the ethical and effective uses of AI and how we can define AI literacy in a way that supports our shared values.

Sydney Giacalone, doctoral candidate in anthropology at Brown University, researches multigenerational farmers and ranchers across the U.S. who are transitioning away from conventional practices towards environmentally and social repairing approaches. This experience often involves questioning past education and internalized ideologies and learning to collaborate with nonhuman life to repair degraded ecologies. The Center for Humanities at Tufts (CHAT) invites the Tufts community to join us on November 14 for a poetry reading with Daisy Atterbury and Adrienne Raphael, moderated by Professor Sarah Akant.

Daisy Atterbury is a poet, essayist and scholar. Daisy’s most recent book, The Kármán Line (2024), investigates queer life and fantasies of space and place with an interest in unraveling colonial narratives in the American Southwest.

Adrienne Raphel is the author of Thinking Inside the Box: Adventures with Crosswords and the Puzzling People Who Can't Live Without Them and the poetry collections Our Dark Academia and What Was It For. She teaches writing at CUNY Baruch and lives in Brooklyn.

Robert M. G. Reinhart is an associate professor and the director of Reinhart Laboratory at Boston University. Research in his laboratory seeks to understand the nature of visual perception and cognition (e.g., attention, working memory, executive control, learning) in the healthy adult brain; how these processes break down in normal aging and neuropsychiatric illnesses, such as schizophrenia; and how we can leverage insights from basic and clinical science to develop novel interventions for optimizing cognition in healthy people and restoring abilities in aging and clinical populations.

Tactics tend to dominate the daily routine, limiting the time and space available to consider strategies. This workshop aims to explore the distinction between strategy and tactics to help web professionals identify the ends and manage the means by which they are achieved. The session was facilitated by Stephen Emmott, LSE.

Dan Smith, The University of Southampton will use his experience of rolling out a successful Web CMS to help attendees with potential problems.

Ross Gardler, OSS Watch, University of Oxford and Andrew Savory, Managing Director, Sourcesense UK will consider what makes a service usable and sustainable? Is it one that offers you a service level agreement (SLA)? Or is it one that has sufficient clients that it is likely to survive long-term? And can a service that is principally a "social" service be sustainable? And how might communities of practice relate to the sustainability of an open service?

Grainne Conole is Director of the Institute for Learning and Research Technology at the University of Bristol, which is a centre of excellence on the development and use of information and communication technology in education. The Institute hosts around 40 projects and services at any one time (funding sources include HEFCE, ESRC, EU and commercial sponsors), employing ca. 70 staff with a range of expertise and skills across the technical and educational domains. Research includes the development of information portals, digital archives, underlying metadata research and associated technology developments and the development and use of shells and toolkits for educational use. She has published over 50 publications on a range of topics, including the use and evaluation of learning technologies and is currently deputy editor for the Association of Learning Technologies journal, ALT-J.

Andrew Aird studied music at Birmingham University and King's College, London. Working at Loughborough University in the early 1980s gave him access to personal computer technology, resulting in a career in music technology. Andrew specialised in applications for composing and publishing, and this aspect led him to become interested in the possibilities offered by the World Wide Web. His current role as Web Site Manager at Goldsmiths College is part-time; he also develops web solutions for music publishers, composers and performers. Swimming, skiing, concerts and visual art fill the scarce hours not spent thinking about, or working on, the web. Andrew gave a talk entitled "Does Web Content Grow On Trees?".

Steven Warburton will discuss how the notion of community continues to be recognised as a fundamental aspect within descriptions of shared human activity and group bonding. In his socio-cultural analysis of the work place Wenger defined a particular type of communion, which he termed a community of practice (CoP). The concept of a CoP has been somewhat abused in current literature yet it does provide valuable insights into how communities evolve, behave and sustain themselves. By elaborating dimensions of community such as shared practice, dialogue, legitimate peripheral participation and negotiation of boundaries, Wenger has provided a model that can be applied to a number of differing groups of activity. This talk will explore what we can draw from the work on CoPs, in terms of the role and identity of institutional web manager, one that is inseparable from a field of practice that remains dynamic, fluid and under constant negotiation.
