Faculty Book Talk With Cathy Stanton

The Center for the Humanities at Tufts (CHAT) invites you to a special event on November 13 at noon. Professor Cathy Stanton will be sharing insights from her new book, Food Margins: Lessons from an Unlikely Grocer.

In a food industry shaped by the abundance, cheapness, and convenience that giant corporations can offer, small-­scale ventures struggle to survive, as anthropologist Cathy Stanton discovered when she joined the effort to save a small food co-­op in a former mill town in western Massachusetts. On the margins of the dominant system, Stanton found herself reckoning with its deep racial and class inequities, and learning that making real change requires a fierce commitment to community and a willingness to change herself as well.

Cathy Stanton is an interdisciplinary scholar and practitioner working at the intersection of cultural anthropology and public history. Her published work focuses largely on the uses of history, heritage, and culture in redevelopment projects, particularly in former industrial settings. Her research particularly highlights the presence and contributions of knowledge producers and cultural workers within processes of postindustrial transformation.

B2: Web CMS and University Web Teams Part II - the Never Ending Story?

The University of Bradford Web CMS project began in October 2005 and by the time IWMW 2008 happens we will have purchased our Web CMS and have a new University Web Team in place (just!). "Crumbs - that's taken a long time," you may say! Well, yes - but we know that by the end of the project we will have a Web CMS that suits our organisational needs and is welcomed and accepted by the users, as well as a new resource to assist the University of Bradford in taking its Web presence forward - the University Web Team. So how did we do it? Following on from last year's IWMW 2007 session (People, Processes and Projects - How the Culture of an Organisation can Impact on Technical System Implementation) we will give some insight into why we think our project has continued to be successful - detailing the hurdles we met along the way and how we overcame them - and imparting the knowledge that we have learnt during the project which can help you take your organisation with you and enable you to implement a huge change management project successfully. Hint - it's all about the people! The session was facilitated by Claire Gibbons and Russell Allen, University of Bradford.

A5: The 'other' Accessibility Guidelines - the Importance of Authoring Tool Accessibility Evaluation in a Web 2.0 World

Web content is increasingly produced by authors without extensive web design skills - whether by staff using CMSs, VLEs and courseware or by students publishing their coursework online. The challenge of making sure this content is as accessible as possible becomes much more significant, and inevitably a burden on the individual or institution. The quality of the authoring tool in supporting accessible content creation becomes critical - however support for the W3C's Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines (ATAG) by authoring tool vendors seems to be seen as a specific (and usually low priority) customer request rather than a fundamental quality of the tool. For institutions considering selecting a VLE, CMS or other tool that supports web content publication, how can they best express accessibility requirements so that the tool takes its share of responsibility for accessible output? And if existing tools fall short of ATAG conformance, how can the effect of this on the accessibility of content best be managed? The session was facilitated by David Sloan, University of Dundee.

See what a small, centralised Web team can deliver without a 1 million pound CMS! More buzzwords than you can shake a stick at and not afraid to get technical. B8: Building The Web Management Community

Brian Kelly, UKOLN, University of Bath and Steven Warburton, Kings College London will consider community. Members of institutional Web management teams have helped to develop a sustainable community through use of mailing lists, such as the web-support and website-info-mgt JISCMail lists (which are very successful in sharing tips and receiving advice on problems) and participation at the IWMW series of workshops (which provide an opportunity for members of the community to meet, hear about new trends and best practices and to share concerns).

How can we encourage web authors to use diverse solutions to optimise accessibility, while making sure that basic principles of accessible design are met?

A7: Usability Testing for the WWW

In a follow-up to last year's session, User testing on a shoestring budget, Emma Tonkin, UKOLN, demonstrates two methods of user testing. One, the cognitive walkthrough, an be carried out by a single evaluator. The second, the think-aloud protocol, is all about observing the way Web visitors interact with your Web site.

Ross Gardler, OSS Watch, University of Oxford and Andrew Savory, Managing Director, Sourcesense UK will consider what makes a service usable and sustainable? Is it one that offers you a service level agreement (SLA)? Or is it one that has sufficient clients that it is likely to survive long-term? And can a service that is principally a "social" service be sustainable? And how might communities of practice relate to the sustainability of an open service?

Plenary Talk 1: Sustainable Communities: What does 'Community of Practice' mean for Institutional Web Managers?

Steven Warburton will discuss how the notion of community continues to be recognised as a fundamental aspect within descriptions of shared human activity and group bonding. In his socio-cultural analysis of the work place Wenger defined a particular type of communion, which he termed a community of practice (CoP). The concept of a CoP has been somewhat abused in current literature yet it does provide valuable insights into how communities evolve, behave and sustain themselves. By elaborating dimensions of community such as shared practice, dialogue, legitimate peripheral participation and negotiation of boundaries, Wenger has provided a model that can be applied to a number of differing groups of activity. This talk will explore what we can draw from the work on CoPs, in terms of the role and identity of institutional web manager, one that is inseparable from a field of practice that remains dynamic, fluid and under constant negotiation.

William Mackintosh, Web Manager, University of York and Damon Querry, Senior Web Development Officer, University of Newcastle upon Tyne will be looking at Search Technology within the University Environmen. The University of Newcastle upon Tyne has implemented a Google Search Appliance. The University of York is committed to the purchase of the Google Mini. The session will discuss the reasons for selecting these products and how they add value to an institution's Web site.

B3: Intranet Managers' Community Session

Keith Doyle, University of Salford will facilitate this session. A small group of people are working towards setting up a peer group to share good practise and knowledge. In this session, there will be the opportunity for delegates working to develop University Intranets to share their thoughts on developments around intranets and portals. We will also discuss how the peer group could develop.

A7: Getting your Hands Dirty with Podcasting

Andy Ramsden, Learning Technology Advisor, Learning Technology Support Service, University of Bristol and Paul Ayres, SOSIG Research Officer, ILRT will be looking at podcasts. The aim of this workshop is that by the end the participant will be able to answer the following five questions; 1) What is podcasting? 2) How do you create, distribute and subscribe to a podcast? 3) What is good practice in terms of designing and creating podcasts? 4) How might podcasts be effectively used in an educational context? 5) Where should people go for more information?

Julie Allinson and Mahendra Mahey, UKOLN will give an overview of the current repository landscape, looking at the different types of repositories, their use within education and the range of issues relating to repositories, including cultural, social, legal, technical and policy considerations. Current JISC work in this area will be highlighted, focussing on how this work will contribute to raising quality standards in repository development, through interoperability and the use of open standards.

Plenary Talk 3: Managing Standards - Delivering a Quality Assured Web Environment

Universities undertake research through a mesh of partnerships, collaborations and contractual relationships. Major research funding bodies, such as government departments, are increasingly encouraging their contractors to adopt formal quality assurance standards - such as ISO 9001:2000. If you haven't come across this already, you are likely to see it very soon! In this talk John Gilbey, Institute QA Manager, IGER discussed the impact of quality standards on the way Web resources - internal and external - are defined, delivered, managed and reviewed in academic environments. An over-view of the quality requirement is presented, along with some pragmatic suggestions to help you deal with it.

United Nations Takes Another Step in Developing a Treaty on Business and Human Rights

The Fashion Industry Meets Human Rights Due Diligence: New York’s Proposed “Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act”

In January 2022, the New York State Senate introduced a bill that seeks to impose significant human rights and environmental due diligence and disclosure obligations on fashion retail sellers and manufacturers operating in the state of New York.  As we reported previously, 2021 saw a number of international and regional legislative efforts to impose human rights due diligence and disclosure obligations on multinational employers.

New York to Require Human Trafficking Recognition Training for Certain Hospitality Employees

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed into law eight pieces of legislation designed to combat human trafficking. These laws require many hospitality industry employers to provide specific anti-human-trafficking awareness training to employees. Massachusetts Attorney General Publishes Long-Anticipated Guidance on the Revised Pay Equity Law

The Massachusetts Attorney General has recently published an Overview and Frequently Asked Questions (the “Overview”) regarding the amendment to the Massachusetts Equal Pay Act, set to take effect on July 1, 2018.  The Overview answers many questions that employers have been asking about this wide-ranging new law.  The Overview also confirms the importance of an employer self-evaluation, offering some direction on what types of evaluations are appropriate, and explaining how it could protect a company from liability under the law.

New York City Bans Contractual Provisions Shortening Period of Time to File Complaints or Civil Actions Relating to Discrimination, Harassment or Violence
