rat 7 Steps to an Effective E-Learning Training Strategy By www.corporatetrainingelearningblog.com Published On :: Wed, 15 Jun 2016 14:23:00 -0400 E-learning creates endless possibilities for new ways to help our team to upskill. In a world where business practice constantly evolves all of us need to be on our toes and up to date with the latest trends and technology relevant to our industry. It’s no use management being on trend if our staff are left behind. Below we will set out 7 steps which will help guide you towards creating an effective e-learning training strategy to ensure that your staff are getting the most out of their training and development program at work.1. Decide On Your Objectives & Plan AccordinglyPlanning is essential in ensuring that the resources you put into e-learning are well spent. Identify what type of training is most needed within your organization at this time. Is the training required uniform across the board, or do you have a need for various types of training?Take into consideration what skills the course will develop, how it will do this and what theoretical frameworks it will be based upon. Next, you need to consider the learners themselves, what are their requirements? We all learn in different ways and to ensure that your staff get the most value out of the e-learning training, you should aim to personalize the training insofar as possible. By setting out your objectives in advance, it will be easy to measure the success of the program at the end. 2. Make It User-FriendlyAbove all else an e-learning environment must be user-friendly. If the learner has difficulty in navigating around the website or accessing the webinar then everything else becomes secondary. Pay close attention to making the material accessible to all staff and giving an introductory tutorial to make sure that everyone knows how to access their course. The language used should be clear and concise, learners want and need to be able to extract the relevant information without having to wade through extra academic style details which do not pertain to how they will use the skills they are developing.3. Give Students a PlanMany learners feel more secure when they are given a clear overview of the course syllabus. Knowing what material they will cover in the coming weeks allows them to do preparatory work if they wish and relieves stress that may arise out of the unknown. This course overview should also outline what is expected of the students, and how they can expect to be assessed. 4. Get Them TalkingGroup interaction and collaborative learning is sometimes seen as not particularly relevant to an e-learning syllabus. However, overlooking this aspect of training may leave students feeling isolated leading to a lack of interest in the training. Not everyone enjoys group work, but it is a feature of most workplaces and even those who don’t enjoy it will probably expect some degree of collaboration during their training. Collaborative activities where students work together to solve a problem create a wonderful learning opportunity for everybody involved. Each learner can contribute the skills that they have been developing, contributing to the good of the whole, and students can identify different ways of approaching tasks. Social media is useful for collaborating, as are forums where ideas can be exchanged.5. Set Up an Assessment StrategyAny training program requires an element of assessment to ensure that the learners are processing and retaining the relevant information. It also allows the students to put what they have learned in the e-classroom to practical use. Some people will prefer to assess the students at the end of each module with a simple multiple choice quiz, while others opt for a collaborative group project at the end of a unit. How the learners will be assessed should be agreed upon before they begin their course, and outlined to them so that they can prepare for it as they progress. Assessment not only gives you as the e-learning coordinator the chance to see how staff are progressing with their training, but it also gives the learners a sense of achievement which will drive them forward and keep them motivated.6. Solicit FeedbackIt is important to ask for feedback to check that your e-learning program is actually delivering what you hoped it would. Be sure to discuss the learning outcomes with both the learners themselves and their team leaders, this will allow you to see if the both parties have derived benefit from the training. Where the learner feels that they have, but their team leader is not seeing it, then perhaps the training needs to be tweaked to ensure that it is more relevant to the worker’s daily workload. You can solicit feedback using online surveys, face to face chats or online chats where the learners come together for a session.7. Keep the Learning GoingMany learners, and indeed, instructors can tend to see training and development as having a set start and finish date. While this may be strictly true, training within an organization should be approached as ongoing. Life itself is a constant journey on the path of learning, why should work be any different. Encourage your staff to engage with their career development in this light. Set up structures by which they can approach you with regard to continuing their learning once they have completed one e-learning course. Perhaps there is an advanced course you could run or a course of study which will complement the first one. Every time your staff upskill in a way that improves their productivity and sense of purpose at work you will see the return in spades.I hope that this overview has given you a few ideas on how to get started implementing your own corporate e-learning training strategy. With adequate planning and a positive approach, you may find that e-learning can make a huge difference to staff morale in your workplace. rat Corporate Training Through Drama By www.corporatetrainingelearningblog.com Published On :: Sun, 18 Dec 2016 15:51:00 -0500 You may not think it, but a key form of training could be missing from your repertoire. If you are not using drama in your corporate training routine, then you should think about adding it immediately. Here’s how this form of training can be such a powerful tool – and what it will help your employees to learn.Improved Leadership SkillsThe first area in which your team can improve their skills is in leadership. When using a drama workshop, trainees are often encourage to form groups and create their own short plays or role plays. This means that someone has to take charge. If you are concerned that some of your employees already have enough leadership authority, then you can select other employees to take charge. When they have to organise something very different to the workplace environment, they can learn a great deal. They may also be surprised to learn that in fact, organising a short piece can be very similar to organising a project. They will learn delegation, how to assign tasks based on skills, and how to manage conflicts between team members. They will also take responsibility for the efforts of the whole team and the results that they come up with.Increased CreativityCreativity can be essential in the workplace. It can aid with problem solving, as well as helping more effective strategies to be developed within projects. It’s also a fantastic attribute to help manage the work-life balance. You need to help your employees to develop this creative side, and how better to do that than by helping them to act? With a short drama workshop, they can be encouraged to write and perform their own plays. This will allow them to work on finding inspiration and developing ideas. It’s also very fulfilling for them to be able to see the results of their work come to fruition. Many creative pursuits are longer term, but this format allows them to put in the work and get feedback within a short space of time.Enhanced TeamworkEspecially if the members of your groups work together in the office, you can really strengthen their ability to work as a team. This is key to getting the finished piece organised and performed to the best possible standard. They will learn how to offer constructive criticism, and how to take it. They will learn to adapt, and how to take the best parts of everyone’s ideas to make an overall project that works. Working as a team to complete their drama workshop is essential for making a more cohesive and collaborative workshop. Better Personal Development It is also important to encourage personal development in your employees, as well as self-belief. Some of them may be shy at the idea of role play or drama, thinking that they would never be able to put together a good performance. This is a common belief for most who have never tried it before. Once they get into the swing of things, they can however prove themselves wrong. The ability to perform and do well in the exercises will astound them, giving them more belief in themselves. It may even spark a newfound interest or hobby! What is important is that your employees not only learn new things, but also have a good time. This will help the lessons to stick, which is great for ongoing development. If you are interested in putting together a training experience beyond the norm, this is definitely an option to explore. Rather than the normal boring options, it creates an experience to remember. Guest Blog Contributor By-line:Jessica Gust is a Marketing Assistant at Localpeek.co.uk- a new postcode finder. rat Flow Issues Limit Pea Starch Inclusion Levels in Swine Rations By www.farmscape.com Published On :: Tue, 05 Nov 2024 00:00:00 GMT Farmscape for November 5, 2024 The Saskatchewan Research Chair in Feed Processing Technology says the biggest challenge with including high levels of pea starch in swine rations is the issue of flow. An increased use of pea protein in products such as artificial meats and protein bars has resulted in an increased availability of pea starch for use as a lower cost energy source in swine rations. However, the small particle size of pea starch raises concerns over the possibility of ulcers in pigs and it has a tendency to plug up feeding systems. Dr. Rex Newkirk, an associate professor with the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Research Chair in Feed Processing Technology responsible for the Canadian Feed Research Centre, says researchers have included pea starch in rations at up to 40 percent with no impact on performance but the flow issue is a limiting factor. Quote-Dr. Rex Newkirk-University of Saskatchewan: Pea starch, because of the process it goes through, is an exceedingly fine material. It kind of flows like water when it flows so what that means from a practical handling perspective is pea starch by itself flows like water. Put pea starch in a mash diet and it basically sets up in a way that it doesn't move as a mass. For us that's been the major handling issue is, how do you get this material to handle through the plant, what form can it be in so it can be more easily managed. From a growth perspective, we've fed up to 40 percent and didn't see any impact on growth so I'm fine with it from a growth perspective but, from a handling perspective, especially if you're feeding a mash diet, I'd probably stick to 10 percent or less. We've done 20 percent and it was OK but I think there was already signs that you could get hanging up in the bin and stuff so my recommendation would be 10 percent inclusion in a mash diet. If it's a pelleted diet, I think you have more room. You could get to 20 percent as long as it will handle through your plant and into the pellet mill well. Or you could even go higher levels, as long as the flow within your plant getting to the pellet mill is fine. That's usually where we find some issues. If we get too high levels, the conveyance systems don't work the way they should. My recommendation would be 10 percent in a mash diet and 20 percent in a pelleted diet. Dr. Newkirk says various options for addressing the flow issue are being explored including pelleting, extrusion and using canola meal as a compatible source of protein. For more visit Farmscape.Ca. rat Tongue Tip Fluids Provide Accurate PRRS Detection By www.farmscape.com Published On :: Wed, 06 Nov 2024 00:00:00 GMT Farmscape for November 6, 2024 Research conducted by Iowa State University shows tongue tip fluids collected from stillborn and dead piglets can be used to accurately detect the presence of the virus responsible for PRRS. With the goal of improving the diagnostic value of tongue tips for PRRS surveillance, an Iowa State University study funded through the Swine Health Information Center, evaluated four different sample collection protocols across 597 tongue tips from stillborn and dead piglets. SHIC Associate Director Dr. Lisa Becton says this is a relatively easy to use type of sample that's being assessed to determine its accuracy for detecting disease in swine. Quote-Dr. Lisa Becton-Swine Health Information Center: The key findings really showed that virus isolation of PRRS can be done from tongue tip fluids. This is important because, up until this time, it had not been proven that this could happen so verifying that the virus isolation can be done is important because that helps to specifically determine if live virus is present in samples that are collected, not just the presence of the RNA. It's also important because it does provide a way to evaluate different sample protocols and then determine which of those really are the best suited for the best diagnostic outcomes. Those things are very important, especially when we're looking at newer sample types to provide veterinarians and producers a way to have confidence in utilization of these alternative sample types. This information will be utilized and shared both with producers and veterinarians because a lot of times people are looking at what are different ways that are relatively labour friendly to be able to collect samples to assess disease status on their farms and tongue tip fluids were one of those samples that was identified as needing investigation so it was important to have research on this to be able to come up with production protocols that can be used for this sample type. Dr. Becton acknowledges diagnostic tests can be costly so you want to optimize the diagnostic results from the samples submitted to the lab by understanding the protocols to follow when collecting those samples. Full results of the study can be found at swinehealth.org. For more visit Farmscape.Ca. Bruce Cochrane. *Farmscape is produced on behalf of North America’s pork producers Full Article

rat Family Research Web Page Generated by Behold By www.lkessler.com Published On :: It took about 20 hours of my time to go through 6 years of my correspondence with my 6 discovered relatives on my Focsaner side from Romania, and custom build a GEDCOM file using Behold as my guiding tool. This was a great dry run of what entering data in Behold will be like, except that I couldn't enter the data directly into the Everything Report, but typed it into a GEDCOM instead. The painful part was manually entering the ID numbers and the parent/child spouse/family GEDCOM links, but Behold's problem list helped me easily fix my incorrect entries. I am now certain that data entry in Behold will be amazing. I entered data on 117 people and I was diligent in included 173 sources for that data. (The way I decided to organize my sources is the story for a future blog post.) I estimate this would have taken me only about 5 hours if Behold version 2.0 was available. I'll let you see the result at: www.lkessler.com/focsaner.htm. Our group and our researcher in Romania will all be using this page as our reference point for the information we have, and I'll update it as we gather more info. I also found a half-dozen little things not working in the html output (e.g. some links, sorting, etc) that I will be able to fix, and then I'll work on the display of pictures, using that page as the test case. So I'm killing two birds with one stone: furthering development of Behold while also making some genealogical progress on one of my family lines. This couldn't be more exciting! Full Article
rat CSS is so Frustrating By www.lkessler.com Published On :: Writing webpages in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) was simple. You learned a few tags and use a simple text-based HTML editor to create it. But then, along came the "experts" who said you have to split off the content from the styling. The content goes into the HTML file and the styling goes into the CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) file. In theory that's fine. But why did they have to make CSS ten times as complicated as it had to be? Yes they want to make it more powerful, but they made it so much more difficult. I shouldn't have to struggle to be able to figure out how to do something. It should be clear cut. Although, I must say after two weeks of heavy-duty working with it, I've learned a lot and finally have developed my own style for my pages. But the real difficulty is that they've made it so complicated that all the different browsers still don't implement everything the same way. Developing table-less columns and CSS-based borders around the content doesn't take long to do. But debugging it in Internet Explorer and Firefox and then trying to tweak it just right so that it looks the same is very frustrating. Once everything starts to look good, I try something else, like print-previewing, and it leads to more head-banging-on-wall. Then I go back in time and try to look at it in Netscape 4.7 and it looks God-awful. That's the price I guess, of moving forward to current standards. I keep saying to myself that this is all worthwhile. The style sheets can then be applied to my Behold blog, forum, purchase page and help file, and it should all look the same. And I only have to go through the "pain" of developing it once. Full Article
rat Integration, Not Once, But Twice By www.lkessler.com Published On :: Last night I managed to install Vanilla and using about a dozen different articles from the web, integrated it correctly with WordPress. I was very pleased. Then this morning, I found that I had missed that fact that the Open Source groups using Wordpress have been working on their own light Vanilla-like Forum software called bbPress. Researching it, and looking at some implementations of bbPress, I saw no advantages anymore to stay with Vanilla. It's implementation was different than WordPress, and I'd have to learn and maintain 2 diffenent methods of adding themes, inserting plugins and setting up the pages. With bbPress, I'd be talking basically the same language as WordPress. Even though bbPress is only at Version 0.8.3.1 (even Behold is further!), right now it seems to have everything I want. It only took me an hour to get rid of Vanilla and integrate bbPress instead. Next I'll customize it to my style and making it exactly what I want. This part's actually a lot of fun. Full Article
