ed STAY IN-TERTAINED | Konkona Sensharma: Loving regional cinema By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 7 May 2020 01:38:12 GMT "I have been defeated by housework," says Konkona Sensharma, who seems exhausted with the never-ending chores. "Household work is taking up more time than I thought. It's an endless repetition and gets boring," adds Sensharma. While most are using this time to discover world cinema on OTT platforms, Sensharma has been exposed to it since childhood. "I was introduced to world cinema very early in life. My grandfather had started the culture of film society with Satyajit Ray. So, they had a lot of screenings on the projector. My mum [Aparna Sen] would get a lot of cassettes home to watch it with her friends." Taking a break from noir films, it seems the actor is indulging in mainstream and regional entertainment these days. She says, "I love regional cinema and I will have to recommend Angamaly Diaries." She expresses her love for Jon Hamm's Mad Men. "The series takes you back in time and gives you an understanding of their attitude towards homosexuality and women," she adds, before recommending The Wire for its "tight script". Stills from Angamaly Diaries and Mad Men She adds Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag to her list purely for its "wicked and witty narrative". "Usually, female characters are [showcased as] earnest and moralistic. They don't write about them being witty and wicked. I loved the irreverent and irresponsible character," says Sensharma. Prashant Nair It has been a memorable week for the filmmaker, whose latest offering, Tryst with Destiny, won the Best Screenplay award at the Tribeca Film Festival. When they announced the win, I was in my pyjamas at 2 am, feeling remarkably unglamorous, reading Danny Boyle's lovely feedback on the movie," he laughs. Though glad that the Viineet Kumar Singh-starrer has received acclaim, Nair feels rather disconnected from the win. "I wanted to experience this moment with my cast and crew. ed Sona Mohapatra's documentary, Shut Up Sona, to be screened at the 2020 Hot Docs Festival in Toronto By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 7 May 2020 11:37:36 GMT In the light of the COVID 19 Pandemic, the 2020 Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, which is the world's largest documentary film festival was in jeopardy but the Film Festival, has decided to uphold & celebrate the spirit of movie making & film-makers, by showcasing a multi-platform 'festival-at-home' experience to its audience that kick-starts on May 28. The only Indian film premiering at this prestigious international festival is Sona Mohapatra's documentary, Shut Up Sona. Directed by Deepti Gupta, the feature length film resonates with every woman's search for equal space in a culture ridden with millennia of misogyny. This is a film about music, art, social change, and a clashing of the ancient and the modern & this political story is told via the journey of Sona Mohapatra & her relentless fight for a voice. Her unapologetic personality has been rendered beautifully in the 85-minute film that takes the audience through the alleys of Vrindavan to the doorstep of a Dargah, rooting it in the diverse culture of the country, & questioning the patriarchy even prevalent in the Uber cool alleyways of Bollywood. ed Salman Khan's caravan Being Haangryy goes to every gully and distribute essentials to the needy By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 8 May 2020 01:30:15 GMT Even as he stays put at his Panvel farmhouse, Salman Khan is doing his bit to help the daily-wage workers and vertically challenged artistes in the industry. Now, the actor has kickstarted a food donation drive in Mumbai where two food trucks labelled Being Haangryy make the rounds of the western suburbs and distribute essentials among the underprivileged. A source reveals, "The food trucks were an initiative of Salman's not-for-profit organisation Being Human and initially kept on the set of Radhe to provide free meals to the crew. Since the suspension of shoots in mid-March, the trucks have been lying unused. When it struck Salman that they can be used for a greater cause, he promptly contacted Yuva Sena leader Rahul N Kanal to implement the idea." Over the past two weeks, they have extended help across slums in Andheri, Bandra and Santacruz. The source adds, "They try to reach 1,000 families every day. Every kit contains three kilos each of rice and wheat flour, two kilos of dal, one litre oil, spices and salt. All safety norms are followed while distributing the rations." A volunteer distributes food kits to the underprivileged Kanal, who is coordinating the endeavour, says, "Salman bhai is sponsoring the drive. We are doing our bit by deputing volunteers so that we can reach out to as many families as possible." Catch up on all the latest entertainment news and gossip here. ed Anushka Sharma-backed Paatal Lok was shot in 110 locations across six Indian cities By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 8 May 2020 01:43:12 GMT Sudip Sharma's Paatal Lok, which is produced by Anushka Sharma and will drop on Amazon Prime Video on May 15, was shot in 110 locations across six Indian cities. "We wanted to explore different cultures, and perspectives, and [narrate] tales from various regions of India. The idea was to present to the audience what they possibly didn't know, or at least, in a manner they weren't familiar with. It is set in parts of Delhi and Punjab," says Sharma of the nine-part investigative crime drama that follows an inspector chasing four suspects nabbed in the assassination of a renowned journalist, and the subsequent dangerous fate he is met with. Anushka Sharma "I have spent a lot of time in Delhi, Punjab, Bundelkhand, and UP while researching for previous projects. Delhi is also the apex of Indian politics, and where the power centres lie. That most media channels operate out of Delhi was another reason to set the series there. The city is fascinating owing to its location too. It has the feel of a frontier town, bordering certain lawless parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan." Gurgaon, and parts of Haryana, particularly Rohtak, were the primary areas where the Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Kabi, and Gul Panag starrer was filmed. Sudip Sharma "While 70 per cent of the show has been shot at actual locations, the rest was done in Mumbai, where we recreated certain areas. We researched on various aspects, like what a cop station actually looks like, and the design and aesthetics of a Delhi policeman's home, and [integrated] that into the show to make it authentic," says Sharma, who filmed in Delhi, Gurgaon, Rohtak, Chitrakoot, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. ed Saif Ali Khan recalls the time he was thrown out of a film for allegedly not showing enough interest By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 8 May 2020 02:14:00 GMT Saif Ali Khan may be a big name in the film industry today, but as a newcomer, he too had to experience rejection and struggle to get where he is today. Today, he is one of the most bankable stars in Bollywood, but when he first started out, he was kicked out of what could have been his first film! Don't believe us? Here's what Khan has to say! In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Saif recalled how he was thrown out of a film, Bekhudi, and how it was quite difficult to find his footing in the industry as a newbie who was just out of boarding school. He shared, "I have a vague memory of my first day on a film set. I was shooting a song for Bekhudi, with Rahul Rawail (director) and Kajol (co-star). I had to tear through fake cobwebs and emerge, singing a line that went, 'Chaahat Ki Raahon Mein, Kyun Itna Darti Hai'. I might just about pull it off today, but, back then, straight out of a boarding school in England, I was petrified." Saying that he must have performed badly, Saif added, "Soon after, Rahul Rawail threw me out of the film, complaining I wasn't showing enough interest. That shot, I have to admit, was particularly appalling." While Saif lost Bekhudi to Kamal Sadanah, he landed another project, a film titled Parampara. Speaking about technicalities in a film and how he is much better at the smaller details now than he was back then, Saif said, "I was pretty bad in Parampara, too, and my voice didn't help. Fortunately, there were several big names in the film, so either I must have stood out like a sore thumb or simply gone unnoticed. I still don't know which." Well, it's hard to believe that Saif, the star that he is today, was quite the anxious newcomer back then! On the work front, the Laal Kaptaan actor was last seen in the comedy Jawaani Jaaneman, co-starring Alaya F and Tabu. The film did good business at the box office. ed Rahul Bose: Message of a film shouldn't glorify hatred By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 8 May 2020 04:52:21 GMT Bollywood actor Rahul Bose has been foraying the digital entertainment space with a couple of projects lately, and he says his parameter as an actor to give his nod to a story has not changed. For him, it is important that the story should have the essence of humanism and not the glorification of hatred. "Honestly speaking, my rules of saying yes to a project do not change. For me, the story matters and not the length of my character. I think by now people know that. I am not the person running after fame or concern about how many people are watching my work. For me, the story has to be important enough to engage, as an actor and as an audience," Rahul told IANS. The actor has worked in the Netflix original "Bulbul", besides the web series "Bombay Begums" directed by Alankrita Srivastava. He is also a part of the much-awaited web series, "Baahubali: Before The Beginning". Rahul's film choices have been as varied as "Mr And Mrs Iyer", "Jhankaar Beats", "Chameli", "Shaurya", "The Japanese Wife", "I Am", and "Dil Dhadakne Do". There is an important element he looks for in a film, before committing to it. "In past, there were films and projects that have been offered to me and I said no to them. You see, the story has to have some amount of humanism. You can show a character as the biggest evil (person) of the world and still can come up with the right message -- not one that is destructive or negative. A message cannot glorify hatred, and if it does, I do not want to be part of that. Of course, my character can be the villain but not the overall message of the film," Rahul said. He explained: "In the recent past I am offered a film that shows a very, very narrow view of nationalism and it was quite a jingoistic story. I can never be part of that. I am the same actor who was part of a film like "Shaurya" that sent out an absolutely right message -- that is, no matter which religion, caste or region you are from, when you are a man in a uniform, all you are upholding is the security of your country." ed Ali Abbas Zafar: Pressured to release Saif Ali Khan's Dilli, but don't want to rush By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 9 May 2020 01:49:24 GMT Several showrunners are speeding up the post-production work to release their digital offerings during the lockdown. Though the idea of having all eyes glued to his show sounds tempting, director Ali Abbas Zafar is in no hurry to reach the finish line. The director — whose political drama, tentatively titled Dilli, is currently in post-production — says he would rather revel in the satisfaction of a series made well than join the rat race. "On Twitter and Instagram, people have been asking us to release the show now. So, there has been pressure, but we don't want to rush the process. Our series was supposed to drop in the last quarter of 2020, and we will stick to that deadline. If the show was ready, we would have released it now because it is an ideal time to grab eyeballs," says Zafar, happy that the Saif Ali Khan-starrer has piqued the audience's interest. When it comes to developing an offering for the global audience, the post-production is a long-drawn process. "Once you deliver your project, it has to be dubbed in nine languages. So, the post-production takes three to four months, longer than the shoot itself." Ali Abbas Zafar As his team gives the finishing touches to the project, Zafar, nestled in his hometown Dehradun, has begun writing the sophomore season. "[The top brass of] Amazon Prime have seen the rushes, and basis that, they have decided to sanction the second edition," he says, beaming with pride. Point out to him that the drama has found its way into the second instalment, but has yet to find an apt title, and he laughs at the irony of the situation. While the working title was Tandav, the makers rechristened it Dilli, only to have a change of heart later. "We are struggling with the name. That's why Amazon has not been able to make an official announcement." Catch up on all the latest entertainment news and gossip here. Also, download the new mid-day Android and iOS apps. In the video, Big B can be seen introducing his kids Shweta and Abhishek to the audience, both of whom say "hello" into the mic. Abhishek wrote: "#flashbackfriday In 1981, my father started the trend of film actors from India doing shows on stage and performing to their songs. Before that, only playback singers did so. The quarantine has given a chance to people to do the things that they didn't otherwise get time for, owing to their busy work schedules. Apart from doing daily household chores, cooking and catching up on films and web-series, Arti has also been practicing yoga. "I used to practice yoga daily when I was in Lucknow but I lost touch in between. Now that we are all home and have time in our hands, I have got back to doing it daily. Usually, I try to do it as soon as I wake up or in the evenings, depending upon how I am feeling that day," she said. "Yoga has positively affected me as it helps calm down my mind. I encourage everyone to do a short session of yoga every day, as these are testing times we are all facing. Yoga will essentially keep you calm and patient," she added. View this post on Instagram Hey Abbie..(abs ) Finally now I can see you little little... you are surely on the way and coming very very soon! Till then for everyone here’s the first photo which was taken on the 15th of march and the other one was today..! I just want to say that I know it's not the best but slowly and steadily I will get there soon. I have shed 5 kgs from the 15th of march till now. Aur aisa nahi hai ki koi pathhar tode! I am into 50 minutes of yoga and 40 minutes of brisk walking every alternate day. And definitely the biggest fight between all the exercises has been the late night cravings. Every night I feel like hogging maybe because of the boredom and also the stressful situation right now. And as you all might know, I am an emotional eater and that's why I had put on 8 kgs inside the big boss house. Like everyone one I also have #CheatDay and you all won’t believe that on my birthday I ate so much, including chinese food that I was craving for. I dont kill myself by not eating what I want, so I do hog once a week. I actually salute people who are consistent with their diet! I wish I was like that but nevertheless I'm still getting there slowly. Thoda jyada time lagega... maybe one month more then all the people who are disciplined, but well that's me and that’s fine. This is the time where you can actually try to improve yourself physically and mentally as well as also emotionally! These memes have only been made because Ramayan is a classic show that cannot and will never be forgotten! And that's precisely what Sunil Lahri feels, the actor who played the role of Lakshman. In an interview with Koimoi, he spilled the beans on what he thinks of these memes and his reaction on seeing them. "I have seen many memes that a lot of people have sent. Even my brother's children in the house send me the memes. I am liking it. I am enjoying it. It's said that you are popular and that's why they make these memes. I am honoured. I feel honoured to be a part of the memes." Talking about his character and why he cannot imagine himself don the role of another one, he said, "Lakshman had a lot of shades to perform, as an actor. If you go to see any other character, it didn't have that kind of performance. Maybe, Raavan but it's a negative character. I am slightly uncomfortable at the moment because my face doesn't permit me to play anything negative. I can play that character but I prefer not to." He added, "That's why I prefer playing the same character and now I feel I can perform 10 times better because, at that time, I think I didn't have experience. Shahane, who was 24 when she portrayed Maria in Circus, shared how SRK was and continues to be a workaholic. "He was a workaholic. He would have worked for 36 hours at a stretch if he was asked to. ed This is what happened when a guy touched Divyanka Tripathi inappropriately once By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 16 Apr 2020 05:03:00 GMT Sexual harassment at workplaces and in Bollywood has unfortunately been rampant for years. There are multiple names that have come out and shared their horrific and shocking stories. And the recent one is Divyanka Tripathi, who recalled an incident when a guy at a cinema hall touched her in an insolent manner. Talking to SpotBoyE, she recollected what exactly unfolded on that fateful day and how she reacted. She said, "It happened in one of the theatres, these were the days when tickets were sold in Black at single screens. So, there should be a lot of rush. I had gone to watch a film and was in the cue to buy tickets. There was this guy who was taking advantage of the crowd and touching me inappropriately." She added, "I lost my cool, held his hand, and of course, after that I slapped him hard and in no time public was all over him." There's a lot of stigmas attached to speaking openly about one's bitter experiences and especially when you're an actor. ed Shefali Jariwala: Always wanted to adopt a baby, was moved by Sunny Leone's decision By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 17 Apr 2020 02:08:00 GMT There are a lot of actors that have gone for adoption to embrace parenthood. Sushmita Sen immediately comes to mind. And another name that comes to mind is Sunny Leone, who adopted a baby girl from Latur, Nisha Kaur Weber. And Leone seems to have inspired Shefali Jariwala, who has spoken to Times of India about how Leone's story moved her. She said, "I discussed adopting a baby with Hindustani Bhau inside the Bigg Boss 13 house. I was actually moved by Sunny Leone's decision when she adopted a girl child. I always wanted to adopt a baby girl and after I got married to Parag when we were discussing about starting a family." She added, "I shared my views with him and he is a very supportive husband." Highlighting the importance of adoption, the actress said, "There are a lot of children in the world who need home and I think I am in a position where I can give them a secure, good life then why not. I want to give that child a good home, education and a good life because God has given me everything!" And if all goes well, there might be a new little member in the house very soon. "I have been blessed with all this so I want to share my blessings with that child. But the adoption process in this country is a little tedious. There's a lot of paperwork involved and there's a lot of waiting also. So we are currently in the middle of the process and if God is kind and your wishes are with us, my dream to bring my child home will come true. I'll become a mother and bring a lovely girl home," said Jariwala. Catch up on all the latest entertainment news and gossip here. Also, download the new mid-day Android and iOS apps. Not much was known about their romance and they didn't even indulge in any sort of social media PDA to at least leave us guessing a possible union in the future. But this is what Tinsel Town is all about, replete with shocks and surprises. But do you know there was a time when Dutta felt she would never get married to Seth? She even has an explanation for that. In an interview with Bollywood Life, she spilled the beans on what made her say so and how the married life has been like. She said, "When I first saw Vatsal, I remember we were doing a mock shoot, however, he was already doing the show. And I saw him standing in the front, he appeared to be very serious, not too talkative. Generally, on-screen images are quite different, they are kinda full of life. So, I was really surprised to see quiet Vatsal in a serious zone." She added, "According to my friends and co-stars on the sets, whenever Vatsal comes to meet me, I generally have a big glow on my face. That's what people say." When asked about the craziest thing she has ever done, her answer was, "Saying yes to him for marriage is the craziest thing I've done. I thought we would never get married." They both were seen together in the show, Rishton Ka Saudagar- Baazigar. Vatsal made his Bollywood debut in 2004 with Taarzan: The Wonder Car and went on to do films like Heroes, Paying Guests, and Malang.
