the Children of single mothers fare as well as those of two-parent: Study By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 05 Jul 2017 15:30:45 GMT Representational pictureChildren born to single women without a partner appeared to enjoy a similar parent-child relationship as those in heterosexual two-parent families, researchers say. Fertility treatment for single women -- who wish to become pregnant without a partner (i.e., single mothers by choice) -- is an increasingly popular procedure in most European countries. The study showed that there were no significant differences in emotional involvement or parental stress between family types. Single-mothers-by-choice, however, showed significantly higher scores on the social support -- such as parents, other family, friends, neighbours -- they received, but also on wanting more social support. There were no significant differences in the children's internal and external problem behaviour (well-being) between both family types, the researchers said. "Single-mothers-by-choice and their children benefit from a good social support network, and this should be emphasised in the counselling of women who want to have and raise a child without a partner," said Mathilde Brewaeys from the VU University Medical Centre, in the Netherlands. The results were presented at the annual meeting of European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Geneva. Experts had raised concerns about the well-being and development of children born to single-mothers-by-choice. However, it seems likely that any negative influence on child development depends more on a troubled parent-child relationship and not on the absence of a father, the researchers said. "The assumption that growing up in a family without a father is not good for the child is based mainly on research into children whose parents are divorced and who thus have experienced parental conflict," Brewaeys explained. For the study, the team compared 69 single-mothers-by-choice (who had knowingly chosen to raise their child alone) and 59 mothers from heterosexual two-parent families with a child between 1.5 and 6 years. the Fitness band during sex is the latest bedroom attraction. Here's why By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 11 Sep 2017 05:00:53 GMT Former cricketer Andrew Flintoff gives a thumbs up to monitoring calories in bed, but his wife, Rachael, isn’t pleased with this. Pic/AFP If you thought mobile phones are a rude intrusion in your bedroom, the fitness band might be the latest addition to the list. Former English cricketer Andrew Flintoff recently revealed (or 'overshared', according to British tabloids) that he wears a digital fitness tracker band in the sack. He added that it helped him meet his calorie burn target for the day and also egged him to go harder in bed to satisfy his wife. His revelations raked in much ridicule and shock from female social media users. Adding to the buzz on social media, his wife Rachael admitted that she wasn't a fan of the idea. When the goal (here, fitness) becomes bigger than everything else, it signifies that something larger is at play. Shah credits this obsession to the individualistic lives couples live today, away from their relatives and family. "We seek growth and better results. While that is good, we lose the security of the known while coping with a world of crazy change. We become anxious even as we strive to be positive. When we can't control the demands of ensuring certainty and meeting our own need for being perfect, we begin to control the things we think we can. This is where compulsive behaviour steps in. It gives us the illusion of control over the bigger picture," explains Shah. Deanne Panday, celebrity fitness expert Celebrity fitness expert, Deanne Panday seconds Shah's opinion. "Fitness is a journey, not a destination. If anything is used temporarily for motivation, or to help you get on track and not as an obsession, it can be positive. In this technology-driven world, the chances of dependency on gadgets are strong. But self-motivation is what works in the long run. Your body is a bio computer and if you listen, it will give you signs on what to do. You don't need a gadget for it," says Panday. Also read: How does Mumbai play between the sheets? the Music Review: Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior By Published On :: Fri, 03 Jan 2020 03:42:28 GMT <strong>EXPECTATIONS</strong> When it comes to a film like <em>Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior</em>, the expectation is that of a situational score. Moreover, since the core genre of the film is action-drama, all that is required too is three to four tracks that come at just the right points in the film. This is what the team of composers, lyricists and singers delivers as well. <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1062213" src="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Tanhaji-5.jpg" alt="" width="750" height="450" /> <strong>MUSIC</strong> It's a euphoric beginning for <em>Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior</em> as composer Mehul Vyas puts together a ferocious piece, <strong><em>'Shankara Re Shankara'</em></strong>. He sings this Anil Verma written track as well along with Adarsh Shinde and together the trio delivers a song which has a 70s and 80s feel to it in the way it is orchestrated and delivered. For the situational in the film, this one works. The experience of Sukhwinder Singh and Shreya Ghosal is apparent right at the beginning of <strong><em>'Maay Bhavani'</em></strong> which pretty much takes off from where <strong><em>'Shankara Re Shankara'</em></strong> left. With both the songs based on Indian Gods, one can sense the kind of feel that the team wanted to bring in the soundtrack here. Ajay - Atul bring in their characteristic style into play in this Swanand Kirkire written number, especially in the way 'mukhda' transitions to 'antara'. Yet another situational number, this one goes with the essence of the film. Sachet-Parampara, who are known most for their melodious songs, especially in last year's all time blockbuster Kabir Singh, showcase their versatility with <strong><em>'Ghamand Kar'.</em></strong> They compose as well as sing this Anil Verma written number which is ferocious in its appeal. Pretty much the theme track of the album, this one has a haunting sound of 'ra ra ra ra' which elevates the soundtrack to a great degree. Appearing at just the right juncture in the film, this one should actually have been the opening song of the soundtrack as well. Very well orchestrated. Last to arrive is <strong><em>'Tinak Tinak'</em></strong> and this too is a product of Sachet-Parampara and Anil Verma combo. Appearing during the end credit roll of the film and picturised on Kajol, this one has Harshdeep Kaur coming behind the mike. Though the styling of the song compliments the kind of set up that Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior boasts of, somehow this one doesn't quite manage to make much of an impression. More so since the film as a whole doesn't really have any romantic undertones and hence this one comes across as rather misfit. <strong>OVERALL</strong> The soundtrack of <em>Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior</em> delivers as expected. Though there aren't many memorable songs out there, they do well enough to keep the film's narrative engaging. <strong>OUR PICK(S)</strong> <em>‘Ghamand Kar’</em>, ‘<em>Shankara Re Shankara’</em> Full Article

the Agra shocker: Girl, asked to kill mother, siblings, commits suicide By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 21 Apr 2020 05:49:40 GMT In a shocking incident, a 16-year-old girl committed suicide after she was given a country made pistol and asked to shoot her mother and two siblings by her father and uncle. The girl left behind a four-page suicide note. Her body was found hanging in her room on April 16 when the incident took place in Shanti Nagar, Devri Road of Sadar police limits in Agra but the matter came to light only after a video made by the girl went viral on the social media. The video, apparently made prior to the incident, shows the girl saying that she wanted to become a police officer and provide justice to her mother and elder brother and younger sister. In the video clip, the girl, a student of Class 10, claimed that her uncle gave her a country made pistol and asked her to shoot her 38-year-old mother and two siblings, but instead, she had decided to take her own life. She alleged that her father, two uncles and a cousin assaulted and mentally harassed her mother, two siblings and herself. In her suicide note, the girl wrote, "I wanted to live, to see myself become a police officer and to provide justice to my mother and siblings. But I am ending my life, as I am tired now. We, all four, are mentally tortured and harassed on a daily basis by my father, two uncles and cousin over property." The police have arrested her father on charges of abetment to suicide, while the rest of the accused are on the run. The autopsy report stated 'asphyxia due to hanging' as the cause of the death. The girl in her suicide note also stated that, "prior to marrying my mother, my father had murdered his first wife and her four children, including a foetus. My uncle, too, has served jail term. They molested me and did wrong things. They all must be given stringent punishment after my death." According to the FIR lodged by the girl's mother, on the morning of April 16, the family was assaulted by the four men. Later, in the afternoon, the girl was found dead. "The four men murdered my daughter, while I was out for work," alleged the mother. Sadar SHO Kamlesh Kumar Singh said, "After the autopsy, a case of IPC section 302 (murder) was changed to 306 (abetment to suicide). We have arrested the father, but the others are still on the run." "We are investigating all the allegations made by the girl prior to her suicide. We will add more sections as the case progresses," he said. the If crisis persists, Indians may be pushed to the brink, says former RBI Governor By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 27 Apr 2020 02:10:03 GMT A prolonged lockdown may possibly push millions of Indians into the "margins of subsistence", former RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said on Sunday while expecting a 'V' curved recovery once the COVID-19 crisis ends and the turnaround in India to be faster than some economies. He was participating in a webinar on 'History repeats but differently – Lessons for the post Corona World', organised by the Manthan Foundation, in which former deputy governor of RBI, Usha Thorat took part. "Because most analysts believe that this year India will actually have negative growth or growth will contract. We must remember that even ahead of the crisis two months ago our growth slowed. Now it has completely stopped. Last year growth was five per cent. Just imagine, five per cent growth last year and we are going to negative or zero growth this year, a decline of five per cent growth," he said. "It is true that India is going to perform in this crisis better than most other countries. But that is no consolation.... Because we are a very poor country and if the crisis persists and if the lockdown is not lifted soon enough, it is quite possible that millions of people will be pushed into the margins of subsistence, he said when asked about his views on the present situation. Subbarao said that as predicted by analysts, India will have a V shaped recovery which is far better than most of the other countries. "And why do we expect a 'V' shaped recovery? Because unlike in a cyclone or in an earthquake, this is not a natural disaster constraint. No capital has been destroyed. Factories are standing. Our shops are still standing. Our people are ready to work as soon as the lockdown is lifted. So it is quite possible the recovery will be V shaped and while we have a V shaped recovery, I think India has a better chance than most of the countries," he opined. According to him, India's recovery was faster than many other countries after the 2008 global financial crisis. On IMF's prediction that India may grow at 1.9 per cent during the current year against about five per cent in the last fiscal, Subbarao said many analysts feel that theprediction is outdated and the growth in GDP may slip into negative. Besides this, Ravi believes that many firms including grocery delivery, fintech, gaming and logistics and transportation are hunting for human resources during this time. He said, “The tech startups are leaving no stone unturned and are aggressively looking for hiring. Many experienced professionals have lost their jobs due to the company facing losses. Expressing its gratitude, the Austin Fire Department tweeted on Saturday, "The C-shift at Station 32 got a surprise yesterday, when McConaughey and @iamcamilaalves stopped by to let us know we're getting several 1,000 N-95 masks soon, part of their donation of 80K to healthcare workers, FFs, and police officers in #ATX and #NOLA! Overall, roughly 13,500 cases have been reported so far, according to Fox News. Camila wrote on Instagram about the donations. She wrote, "Our mission is to protect those who protect us, by providing healthcare workers, firefighters, police officers and others with approximately 80,000 masks needed to battle the #COVID19 virus." She hoped that the move would "inspire you to pick a lane to help others whatever that lane is even if your lane is helping your neighbour, calling people, emotional support, donations, volunteer... pick a lane and do it well! Stay strong this too shall pass..." Last month, McConaughey urged students at the University of Texas in Austin to stay at their homes after dozens tested positive following an ill-fated spring-break trip to Mexico.
