ut Setting up and moderating a Mastodon instance (but not hosting) (Remote) By jobs.metafilter.com Published On :: Tue, 06 Dec 2022 19:59:24 GMT This is very speculative. I am assisting a faculty member where I work with the idea of establishing a Mastodon server (hosted by the university) to support a specialized intersection of a particular equity-seeking group and an area of study. The work would be to help run the server, and possibly promote it -- a combination moderator and marketer, both making sure the community is running smoothly and also reaching to people to encourage them to join. If this seems interesting to you, and in full knowledge that this might go nowhere, I'd love to hear about your moderation experience, how many hours a week you think you'd be able to put into the project, and your pay per hour expectations (in USD). ut NYC : Root some cuttings in water and grow avocado pits in water (New York City) By jobs.metafilter.com Published On :: Sat, 20 May 2023 07:43:20 GMT I'm looking for someone in NYC who will grow some plant cuttings and avocado pits in water for me, for a trade show in August. I'll be exhibiting at a trade show in NYC in mid-August. One of our products is a little tool/display for water propagation of cuttings, succulents or pits such as avocado or mango pits. Normally I grow my own display cuttings and pits for this purpose, and it looks awesome at trade shows local to me (europe). However, I can't fly with live plants to the USA. So, I'd like to hire someone in NYC to root cuttings in water and grow a few avocados and mango pits, so they'll be pretty and leafy by mid-August. I need that someone to be super reliable, so I can be assured to have those plants ready to pick up for the show. They don't need to be a professional, but it'd be great if they've plenty of experience and access to sufficient space on a sunny windowsill to grow these. I would pick up the plants from you on August 11th or 12th. So, if you're already growing cuttings at home, and are interested in this job, memail me and we can discuss details and compensation. ut Maps app with custom route selection By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Fri, 08 Jul 2016 18:50:41 -0800 Is there a maps app that will give me time/traffic estimates on the route of MY choice? So for example, I ask Google Maps to navigate me back home and they give me time & traffic for a couple different options. But in many cases there's another route that I want to take for my own reasons that's not being presented, and I want to see how it's doing traffic-wise. I would like to be able to input the street/bridge/whatever I want to take and get a route based on that. Does such a thing exist? I'm on iOS (current).I know I can add a stop along the route to force it to go the way I want in the worst case scenario but this isn't always possible or practical. I would like to find out if there's an app that has this functionality built in.Waze doesn't do this either. Full Article maps google googlemaps apps app choice route routechoice stumped

ut By Faint of Butt in "Our Cockroach Era" on MeFi By www.metafilter.com Published On :: Sun, 10 Nov 2024 17:41:42 GMT I do not want to be alive. This is not a new development; I first voiced this opinion to my mother when I was five years old, and it has persisted through the subsequent four decades despite therapy, a vast array of medications, and multiple forms of invasive treatments that have made my existence even less bearable while having no affect on my depression (or, as I think of it, my identity and most fundamental self). Given the opportunity to press a button and fast-forward to my deathbed, I'd do it without hesitation. But these Nazi motherfuckers will not leave the people I love alone. They are forcing me to stay alive, even though I hate every minute of it, just so I can contribute my meager skills to the war effort against them. You have no idea how furious I am, because all I want is to die, and they won't let me, because if I did I'd be ceding the world to them, and I refuse to do that without exhausting every drop of blood within me. If I can't have a single moment of joy, peace or happiness, then neither can they. Full Article
ut Are Prosecutors Too Cozy With Police? Some DAs Say Campaign Contributions Need To End By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Thu, 18 Jun 2020 18:06:00 +0000 The growing calls for systemic reform of American policing follow years of rising anger at the ongoing deaths of African Americans at the hands of law enforcement, including the recent killing of George Floyd. The calls for change run the gamut from severely restricting police use of deadly force, creating a national database of abusive officers and re-directing taxpayer money away from police toward social programs that improve education and tackle crises including homelessness, poverty and mental health care . But one key problem has gotten less attention: the conflict of interest, real and perceived, between prosecutors and police unions. When district attorneys run for the office they get political donations from a range of interests including powerful, well-funded police unions who represent the officers that district attorneys will be called to prosecute in the event of officer brutality, corruption or even murder. The Black man was shot and killed during an encounter with white police officers earlier this month after he was discovered asleep in a car at a fast-food restaurant. The viewing was held at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was a co-pastor. The funeral service, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday, will also take place at the church. Brooks' death on June 12 added to the fury and anger already felt by demonstrators protesting against systemic racism and police brutality in Atlanta and across the nation. Many of the protests were prompted by the death of George Floyd in custody of Minneapolis police in May. Atlanta-based movie and television mogul Tyler Perry is reported to be covering funeral costs for the family.
