COVID-19 has ravaged ride-hailing companies, but an industry watcher says the crisis could make Uber stronger (UBER)

  • While ride-hailing has suffered from the impact of COVID-19, Uber is in a good position to survive the crisis, three analysts who cover the company told Business Insider.
  • Uber is in no danger of running of out money anytime soon, said Mark Mahaney, a managing director at RBC Capital Markets.
  • And a series of cost-cutting moves should make the company profitable by next year, said Dan Ives, a managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities.
  • Uber's food-delivery service, Uber Eats, gives the company an advantage over ride-hailing competitors, since it allows homebound consumers to keep using its app, said Tom White, a senior research analyst at DA Davidson.
  • Are you a current or former Uber employee? Do you have an opinion about what it's like to work there? Contact this reporter at mmatousek@businessinsider.com. You can also reach out on Signal at 646-768-4712 or email this reporter's encrypted address at mmatousek@protonmail.com.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The ride-hailing industry has taken a major hit from COVID-19 as potential customers remain confined to their homes, but Uber is in a good position to survive the crisis, three analysts who cover the company said.

"Their business model will be intact on the other side of this," said Dan Ives, a managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities.

A strong cash reserve will help. After ending the first quarter with $9 billion in cash and short-term investments, Uber has the resources to survive a scenario in which the prevalence of COVID-19 and its effect on consumer behavior last for the next two years, said Mark Mahaney, a managing director at RBC Capital Markets.

On Thursday, Uber disclosed its first-quarter financial results, reporting an adjusted loss of $2.9 billion on revenue of $3.5 billion during the first three months of this year. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said on a call with analysts that the ride-hailing company would cut $1 billion in fixed costs. The company has recently removed its food-delivery service — Uber Eats — from eight unprofitable markets, folded its electric bike and scooter business into Lime (Uber recently led a $170 million investment round in the company), and announced it will lay off about 14% of its workforce.

Those moves should help Uber become profitable in 2021 (the company predicted in February that it would turn a profit by the end of this year), Ives said. Uber's management, which had struggled in the wake of the company's 2019 IPO, has performed well in the current crisis by being transparent with investors and quickly moving to reduce expenses, Ives said. Investors signaled their approval of the company's strategy by sending shares up as much as 8% in after-hours trading on Thursday.

Uber Eats was one of the highlights of the company's first-quarter results, said Tom White, a senior research analyst at DA Davidson, as gross bookings grew 52% from the first quarter of 2019 to $4.7 billion. Eats gives Uber an advantage over ride-hailing competitors that don't have a similar service, as it allows the company to keep homebound consumers using its app, White said. Even after the toll of COVID-19 begins to subside, demand for online food delivery could see continued growth, he added.

But there are still challenges ahead for Uber. The company said rides fell by as much as 80% in April, and Ives projects that 30% of the customers for gig-economy companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Lyft won't use a ride-hailing service until there's a vaccine for COVID-19. Yet the pandemic could leave Uber better off in the long run, White said.

"I saw and heard enough [during Uber's first-quarter earnings call] that makes it harder and harder for me to think that these guys don't emerge from this pandemic probably in a stronger competitive position and a healthier and leaner operating position," he said.

Cruise Drinks Packages. 8 Big Watch-Outs

Cruise drinks packages are becoming increasingly popular. Most cruise lines offer them, and actively promote and encourage cruising passengers to buy one. However, is a drinks package right for you? I explore 8 reasons and times that a drinks package on a cruise ship is probably not worth buying. Cruise lines often have different levels and types of drinks packages, such as lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity, and what should you be thinking about if deciding between these. Discover if a drinks package is right for you, and the watch-outs and things to consider.

How Can We Take Advantage of Reading–Writing Relationships?

Teacher question: Everyone says reading and writing are connected. But our school focuses on only reading. We have a reading program (we don’t have a writing program). We test the students three times a year in reading, but never in writing. Writing isn’t even on our report card, though I guess it is part of Language Arts. What should we be doing with writing? Shanahan's response: You came to the right place. I think your school is making a big mistake not giving sufficient attention to writing.

Simple Image Gallery

Adding image galleries inside your Joomla articles is now super-easy and simple, using the magical "Simple Image Gallery" plugin for Joomla.

The plugin can turn any folder of images located inside your Joomla website into a grid-style image gallery with cool lightbox previews. And all that using a simple plugin tag like {gallery}myphotos{/gallery}.

So for example, if we have a folder called "my_trip_to_Paris" located in images/stories/my_trip_to_Paris, then we can create our gallery by simply entering the tag {gallery}my_trip_to_Paris{/gallery} into some Joomla article.

The galleries created are presented as a grid of image thumbnails. When your visitors click on a thumbnail, they see the original image in a lightbox popup. The thumbnails are generated and cached using PHP for better results.

So let's briefly see the main advantages of using Simple Image Gallery on your Joomla website:

  • you don't need to have an additional gallery component to display a few images,
  • you don't need to tell your visitors "to see our photos from Paris click here" and
  • you focus more on content writing and less on administering the images!

The plugin is ideal for news portals wanting to display some product images, for example, inside their articles. Or for people who quickly wanna show their summer vacation pictures. With Simple Image Gallery, you can have as many galleries as you want inside each article.

Since v3.6.0, the image gallery grid can be printed when using the print preview feature available in most Joomla components (including the default article system component and K2).

Please note that if you want to create a gallery from a subfolder located inside your "image gallery root folder", simply adjust the plugin syntax to reflect the remaining path (after your set "root folder"), e.g. {gallery}folder/subfolder/othersubfolder{/gallery}. Make sure you write the path to your target folder without any slashes at the beginning or the end of your path.

As of v4.0.0, Simple Image Gallery is also compatible with the upcoming Joomla version 4 release (currently in "beta").

You can see a demo of the plugin here: https://demo.joomlaworks.net/simple-image-gallery

Simple Image Gallery is a Joomla plugin developed by JoomlaWorks, released under the GNU General Public License.

Simple Image Gallery Pro v3.7.0 released

Simple Image Gallery Pro v3.7.0 is now available to download for subscribers. This new release introduces 2 additional popup engines (modals) and improves compatibility with K2 v2.10.x.

Here's what's been added or changed in Simple Image Gallery Pro with the release of v3.7.0:

  • Added Strip & Lightbox2 to the list of supported popup engines (modals). Strip allows for displaying your galleries on the right side of the available viewport and it's ideal for product display/presentation or e-commerce websites. Lightbox2 is the original Lightbox script updated for the modern web by its original author, Lokesh Dhakar.
  • Updated Fresco.js to its latest release. Additionally, the Fresco.js specific attributes on each gallery layout link are now removed as they are appended dynamically using JS (so older gallery layouts can work fine as well, without any modifications). Fresco.js is now also fully open source which means there is no watermark on the popup/modal.
  • LightView now supports captions as well.
  • Improved compatibility (and performance) with K2 v2.10.x which was released mid November 2019. Especially for anyone still on Joomla 1.5 and K2 v2.10.x, we highly recommend you update to resolve JS conflicts between K2 and SIGPro in the item edit form.
  • Fixed a bug where SIGPro's K2 plugin would accidentally trigger upon saving a K2 category in K2 v2.10.x.
  • In the backend component, SIGPro's media manager (elFinder) has been updated to the latest release (v2.1.50).

You can download the nightly build of Joomla 4.0.0 "Beta 1" here: https://developer.joomla.org/nightly-builds.html
  • Fancybox has been updated to its latest release (v3.5.7) and it's now loaded off the jsDelivr CDN (which is also "GFW" friendly).
