FBI Reports Dip In Hate Crimes, But Rise In Violence

Updated Nov. 12, 5:25 p.m. ET While the number of reported hate crimes dipped slightly in 2018, violence against individuals rose to a 16-year high, according to numbers released Tuesday by the FBI. The FBI's annual tally counted 7,120 hate crimes reported last year, 55 fewer than the year before. The main concern for extremism trackers, however, is the rising level of violence — the report showed an increase in the number of "crimes against persons," such as intimidation, assault and homicide. "We're seeing a leaner and meaner type of hate crime going on," said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University San Bernardino. "Homicides were up and crimes against persons were up and that's an important thing to look at." Hate crimes targeting people accounted for 61% of all hate crimes in 2018, according to Levin, who is co-author of a report released Tuesday that analyzes law enforcement data. The FBI recorded 24 murders classified

A psychedelic synthpop meditation on dreams, the romance of travel, the uncanny desert night, and technology approaching obsolescence. If Tears For Fears collaborated with 1970-era Steve Reich, you might get something like this. Based on a painting by Georgy Nissky and a time-lapse video of two vintage railroad semaphores in the New Mexico desert. LYRICS Somewhere over Santa Fe Atmospheric ocean Wheeled above our dreaming heads Hypnotized in motion Signals in your lover's eye Sleeping at the junction Silhouetted in the sky Solemn semaphores sit Winking out their last goodbye Frozen into caution Dreamt I was a satellite Falling out of orbit Rolling in the silver light Like a lonely gauntlet Winking over Wagon Mound And the pines of Carson No more lunar lullaby Did I see their arms lift As I broke up on the tracks? P.S.: I've started releasing free albums of new material every month, and this is on the newest one. Grab and enjoy.

10 Years Of Spectacular U.S. Job Growth Nearly Wiped Out In 4 Weeks

Updated at 8:43 a.m. ET The number of people filing for unemployment climbed by another 5.2 million last week as the toll of the nation's economic dive amid the pandemic continues to mount. That number is down from the revised 6.6 million in the week that ended April 4, the Labor Department said . But in the past four weeks, a total of 22 million have filed jobless claims — nearly wiping out all the job gains since the Great Recession. The dramatic reversal followed a decade of spectacular growth in jobs that brought the unemployment rate to near 50-year lows along with record low jobless rates for blacks and Hispanics. Now the job market is on its knees. Don't see the graphic above? Click here. The unemployment rate is expected to surge in coming months , with many full-time workers pushed into part-time jobs or not working at all. The economy lost about 700,000 jobs in March — ending 113 straight months of increases. And overall job losses are likely to be 10 to 20 times that big in

Data Engineer, Enterprise Partnerships (Remote)

This is a direct hire to my team, which is the client-facing arm of Superconductive. We're a really great company - a distributed team of kind, smart, interesting people who treat each other like human beings. Full job description is below - feel free to reach out with questions!

Our mission

Superconductive’s mission is to revolutionize the speed and integrity of data collaboration. We are the team behind Great Expectations, the leading open source tool for defeating pipeline debt through data testing, documentation, and profiling. Data teams all over the world use Great Expectations to boost the confidence, integrity, and speed of their work.

About the role

As a Data Engineer on Superconductive’s Enterprise Partnerships team, you will directly contribute to the success of our partnerships with enterprise clients. You will be responsible for owning the end-to-end process of designing, building, and deploying data pipelines, using Great Expectations for data validation and testing. As part of this, you will be exposed to a wide variety of clients, industries, and types of data infrastructure.

You will be expected to:

Develop a deep understanding of client needs and goals, as well as their existing data infrastructure
Design, build, and deploy different pieces of data pipeline infrastructure, such as tools for ETL, data warehousing, and workflow orchestration
Train our clients in best practices for building, maintaining, and validating their data pipelines
Synthesize learnings from client work and identify high value product improvements to feed back into Great Expectations

As part of Superconductive, you will also have opportunities to evangelize Great Expectations through conference talks, workshops, and blog posts, if you choose to do so.

Why join Superconductive?

Glad you asked!

We offer…

A world class team, with deep roots in open source, cutting-edge software and data development. We are actively cultivating a new cultural blend of excellent data engineering and AI-enabled technical workflows.

A fast-growing company with lots of opportunity for learning and personal growth.

A front-row seat to the rapid evolution of data science and engineering. Data work is going through a renaissance, and—as the leading provider of a key piece in the new technology ecosystem—Superconductive is right in the middle of it.

A kind, curious, and open-minded company culture. We are always seeking ways to improve ourselves and our processes; we keep these conversations open to the whole team. We prioritize empowering our team members rather than a command and control hierarchy.

A distributed team with lots of flexibility around timing and individual work preferences. We currently have teammates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Salt Lake City, New York, Michigan, North Carolina, and other places. We’d love to add your town.

And of course, competitive compensation (base salary + equity package) with available Medical, Dental, Vision & 401K.

Job requirements

Minimum two years of work experience as a data engineer or in a role with responsibilities including:
Design, implementation, and maintenance/management of data pipelines
Implementation and management of SQL databases

Proficiency in SQL and Python

Proficiency in engineering tools and best practices, such as version control and testing

Experience with data analytics and relevant tooling (e.g. Python data stack, R)

An excitement for interacting with clients and digging deep into new (to you) technologies and domains

Strong candidates for this role will most likely come from backgrounds in either data engineering or data science. We are looking for people with substantial experience building data pipelines, or experience developing software with a close affinity to data and analytics.

Great engineering is more than just technical proficiency. Our team is set up to support and build the following cultural skills. We don’t expect black-belt virtuosity. We do expect everyone to bring good ideas and habits, so that they can contribute to a collective culture of best practices.

Have data in your blood - the more curiosity you have about a wide variety of data from all walks of life, the better.

Communicate well—in writing, in person, and on Slack.

Be good at time management (e.g. estimating timelines, prioritizing tasks, avoiding rabbit holes, speaking up when you need help).

Possess keen antennae for the lived experience of technical work. We constantly seek out opportunities for delightful refactors to tools, workflows, and collaboration, gathering ideas from all team members.

Commit to a culture of transparency, cooperation, and mutual support in an entirely distributed team.

Play nice with others. Assholes need not apply.

Nice to haves

Experience in a client-facing role, e.g. sales engineering, implementations, forward deployed engineering

Project management experience

Experience with domain-specific data in multiple industries (e.g. healthcare, ad-tech, e-commerce)

Advanced skills in data analytics, statistics, or machine learning

Devops and data infrastructure skills are a plus (e.g. workflow orchestration tools, containerization)

Experience with software engineering, and possibly contributions to open source projects

Superconductive Health, Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer. In compliance with Federal law and the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 22.1800, the selected candidate will be required to provide documentation that will verify their identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

LYNE EXPLORES LOVE’S CONTRADICTIONS ON HER DEBUT EP ‘BIPO FEELS’

CHAMPIONED BY CAPITAL XTRA, REPREZENT RADIO, MNM BELGIUM, TARMAC, PULSE88 RADIO

STREAM HERE: https://open.spotify.com/album/7m6DPu3m1iE76vZDiWRaJ9?si=O7cOB7WgSviNrtRfou8ICA

Introducing 23-year old London-based Belgian Congolese songstress LYNE, who – after teasing us with three well-received introductory singles in the past couple of years that have seen her garner strong support from the likes of Capital Xtra, Reprezent Radio, MNM Belgium, Tarmac, and Pulse88 Radio, among others – is excited to unveil her brand new debut EP titled Bipo Feels, a phrase which Lyne coined about the way relationships can have us feeling bipolar, with completely opposing emotions all the time.

Produced by frequent collaborator D.E.W.I, Lyne’s Bipo Feels EP is an exquisite and expansive R&B offering, with lush afrobeats, soul and rap sensibilities sprinkled across the project, to make it all the more interesting of a listening experience for fans and critics alike. Led by Lyne’s angelic and immersive voice, and her honest and relatable songwriting, as well as D.E.W.I’s glorious musical backdrops, the Bipo Feels EP sees Lyne at her most vulnerable, as she opens up about an undecisive time in her life, which she describes as “those moments where you can have different feelings towards a man you love”.

From Lyne expressing how she is hopelessly in love with her man on the opening track ‘Together’, to the following track ‘Not Sorry’, which sees Lyne expressing her frustration with this same man, leading her to even switch between English and her native French language to convey her annoyances, the theme of the EP quickly flips on its head, and by the third track ‘All Mine’, Lyne has done a complete 180-degree switch, as she now professes to want this same man all for herself, but on the EP’s final track ‘9PM’, she finds out her man is cheating on her, and all hell breaks loose, with seemingly fatal consequences.

Speaking about the inspiration behind her Bipo Feels EP, Lyne says, “Writing this EP really helped me release some thoughts I feel like I couldn’t really open up about. Having doubts, and not being able to see clearly, while feeling different emotions at the same time, all caused by the same person, can be very frustrating. We say that there is a thin line between love and hate and I totally believe that. Intense love can seem so lasting and forever that it’s almost surrealistic when we realize how quickly it can turn into anger. I want this EP to be a message of support to anyone feeling that confusion about what their heart is saying, at times. You are not alone but keep praying and God will show you what you need to see”.
