ni Issues of the Environment: HRWC study shows mussels in Huron River will benefit over time after the Ypsilanti Peninsular Paper Dam is removed By www.wemu.org Published On :: Wed, 16 Oct 2024 07:23:17 -0400 Over the summer, the Huron River Watershed Council conducted an extensive survey of freshwater mussels in the Huron River to determine potential impacts when the Peninsular Paper Dam is removed. It found that removing the Pen Dam could release sediment, potentially smothering downstream mussel populations. Once the dam is removed, though, the river will return to a more natural state, benefiting mussel species over time. WEMU's David Fair looked at the research and its implications with Huron River Watershed Council Ecologist Dr. Paul Steen. Full Article

ni Atlanta's New Soccer Team 'United' Ahead of Inaugural Season By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Fri, 03 Mar 2017 20:30:29 +0000 Atlanta’s first Major League Soccer team plays its inaugural game Sunday to a sold out crowd. Atlanta United hosts one of the league’s founding clubs, the well-established New York Red Bulls. It’ll be a tough contest for the fledgling Atlanta team. Yesterday, I drove out to Flowery Branch to see how they’re playing and feeling ahead of their first game. About three dozen soccer players are scrimmaging in small groups of six at their practice facility about an hour north of Atlanta. They run constantly, quickly passing a ball between themselves in square “fields” demarcated by small orange cones. Sharp-eyed coaches walk around blowing whistles and yelling feedback. The players and coaches communicate seamlessly in English and Spanish. "There’s a few coaches who speak English and Spanish as well so they just translate here and there." 19-year-old defender Miles Robinson is from Massachusetts, but says he’s used to an international work environment. ni In The Jungles Of Panama, A 'New' Take On Community By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Tue, 28 Mar 2017 13:57:22 +0000 An Atlanta entrepreneur is the subject of a new documentary television series premiering Tuesday on Viceland. On Sunday, about 100 Atlanta Film Festival audience members gathered at Dad's Garage Theater for a somewhat surprise screening of the Ondi Timoner project. "We planned this 48 hours ago," said Timoner. "It makes perfect sense for us to be here because Jimmy's from Atlanta." Timoner's camera follows Jimmy Stice, a small staff of mostly Americans, and a few hundred millennial interns who are building a sustainable town called Kalu Yala from scratch in the middle of the jungle. Kalu Yala means "sacred village" in the Kuna language. "We're building a town to look for the best ways we can live in terms of compassionately treating each other in a global community. Access to food access to healthcare access to socioeconomic mobility that's actually beneficial to the environment," said Stice in the show’s trailer . The 10-part series promises plenty of drama documenting young Americans Full Article

ni 'Glee' Actor Naya Rivera's Death Ruled Accidental Drowning By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Mon, 13 Jul 2020 17:48:00 +0000 Updated at 8:39 p.m. ET Tuesday The Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death of actor Naya Rivera to be an accidental drowning. She had disappeared on July 8 while boating with her 4-year-old son, and her body was recovered from a Southern California lake on Monday. Best known for her starring role on the Fox show Glee , Rivera was 33 years old. Sheriff William "Bill" Ayub said Monday Rivera's remains were found in Lake Piru in the Los Padres National Forest, not far from Los Angeles. For six seasons, from 2009 to 2015, Rivera played the role of an unexpectedly popular television antihero. Glee 's Santana Lopez was a cynical, initially closeted high school cheerleader with charisma to burn and an ax to grind. "The only straight I am is straight-up bitch," Santana announced in Season 2. But the character's bullying eventually yielded to team spirit and a tender romance with another cheerleader, the sweet natured but dim Brittany. Glee fans pushed for the storyline, Full Article

ni SF / East Bay Mefi 25 year anniversary BBQ By irl.metafilter.com Published On :: Wed, 10 Jul 2024 23:40:17 GMT Oh snack! MetaFilter's 25 year anniversary is this weekend! East Bay (and other Bay Area) mefites, let's meet up! I couldn't think of an easy venue that is outdoors and works with who-knows-how-many-people, except for my back yard! Come hang out and eat some food! Sunday, Jul 14, 2pm until close. I probably won't start the grill until 4 or 5, so have brunch or late brunch (portmanteau: "lunch") beforehand. It's last minute so I have no idea how much people will show up, so rather than provision based on guesses, let's just everyone potluck it up! If you want to bring something, great! Comment below so everyone doesn't each bring twelve of the same thing. If you don't want to bring anything, great! If you don't know, you can flip a coin, or defer your decision until after you arrive, because: There is a grocery store literally directly across the street from my house. It's pricey but if we run out of groceries, we can get more groceries, and then eat the groceries. Yum, groceries! There's a bunch of restaurants nearby that can do take out or delivery if you hate all this BBQ business. My back yard is pretty big and fine for kids and well-behaved dogs. I've got a gas grill. Two cars can park in my driveway on a first come first serve basis. The neighborhood can otherwise be difficult to park in. Nearest BART is MacArthur, which is about a mile away, and there's bike share docks there and close to here. Full Article Anniversary BBQ EastBay MeetUp
ni Content Warning: This Comment May Have Been Secretly Edited By metatalk.metafilter.com Published On :: Thu, 24 Oct 2024 20:43:20 GMT Hello, folks. I would like to know 1) if it's common practice for mods to edit users' comments without any indication of a mod note, 2) when this practice began, and 3) if it's been disclosed as a community practice here. As a member of the mefi community it's certainly something I would like to provide feedback on!I noticed that a recent dumb joke comment of mine was altered at some point after it was posted. The comment in question: Where's the mugshot. There are no known photos of this guy after like 2006 Found it. (Content warning: gory image) posted by phunniemee at 3:22 PM on October 22 The bold text--the content warning--was not added by me. There is no mod note either in my comment or elsewhere on the thread indicating that this was edited in any way. Was my comment in poor taste? Yeah sure, many of the things I do are. If a comment picks up flags, please delete it. Or add a content warning that says "MOD NOTE: CONTENT WARNING FOR GORY IMAGE" if you must. That's the community I have been a part of--moderation by deletion with active mod involvement in the thread. I absolutely do not want to be in a community where people's comments are EDITED by a mod without any indication that the text was written by someone other than the poster. My own comment here and the relatively minor edit is about as stupid as it gets in the specific, but I'm feeling genuinely scandalized right now and deeply uncomfortable to find out that our mods are editing users comments in secrecy. I've been on metafilter for a decade and a half, and I know the people here only because of the things that people say online. It's important to me that our names are appended to the things we actually say. This is a staggeringly bad path for metafilter moderation to take and I think the community needs some disclosure on how often this happens. [phunniemee's note: Loup did reach out to me over email to explain that this edit followed the policy from the FAQ to add a content warning where deemed necessary by a mod, but that it was an error to not leave a mod note or to let me know the edit had occurred. That the mod team has discussed and agreed that a mod note will always be included in the future. I appreciate that individual errors happen and I believe it's most likely that this was an edit made in good faith. However. There have been a number of mod calls this year that have eroded the faith that I have in the ongoing moderation of the community I love, and I would like to continue forward with this metatalk to ensure we continue to be a community that's moderated thoughtfully and with active user engagement.] Full Article
ni The Fed Helped Companies Borrow Money. Some Laid Off Thousands Anyway By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Wed, 10 Jun 2020 09:00:00 +0000 After the coronavirus lockdowns forced it to shut down its 345 U.S. theaters, Texas-based Cinemark in April decided to do what a lot of companies have done: borrow money by selling bonds. The sale was made easier by the fact that the Federal Reserve was lending out trillions of dollars to businesses and governments, providing a much-needed boost to the corporate debt market in an effort to prop up the economy. Even as it was borrowing money, Cinemark also announced a number of steps "to endure a prolonged period of no revenue." They included laying off 17,500 workers with no guarantee when they'll be rehired. During the current crisis, the Fed, which began a two-day meeting on Tuesday, has pulled out all the stops to keep the economy afloat, lowering interest rates to zero and starting a series of unprecedented and historic new lending facilities practically overnight. "It has taken what were already extraordinary, exceptional, unusual, unconventional tools and has expanded them even Full Article

You can sign up here . Geoff Caddick / AFP via Getty Images Brooklyn Heights sits across the East River from Lower Manhattan. It's filled with multimillion-dollar brownstones and — usually — Range Rovers, Teslas and BMWs. These days it's easy to find parking. The brownstones are mostly dark at night. The place is a ghost town. And the neighborhood's sushi restaurants, Pilates studios, bistros and wine bars are either closed or mostly empty. It's a microcosm for what has been the driver of the pandemic recession: Rich people have stopped going out, destroying millions of jobs. That's one of the key insights of a blockbuster study that was dropped late last week by a gang of economists led by Harvard University's Raj Chetty. If you don't know who Chetty is, he's sort of like the Michael Jordan of policy wonks. He's a star economist. ni Running From the Daylight By www.amazingfacts.org Published On :: Sun, 21 Jan 2024 00:00:00 GMT If the erring one persistently refuses to heed the voice that calls him with pitying, tender love, he will at last be left in darkness. The heart that has long slighted God's mercy, becomes hardened in sin, and is no longer susceptible to the influence of the grace of God. Fearful will be the doom of that soul (PP, 165). When the Light comes on, on which side will you find yourself ? The wicked run from the light, the righteous run to the light... There's no time to waste; we must make our decision now. Study with us as the pastors discuss tribulations and times of trouble, and if prophecy has been fulfilled or is still to take place. 1.- How long will the tribulation last ? 2.- What is the true meaning of speaking in tongues ? 3.- Is it sun worship to keep the Sabbath according to the Gregorian calendar ? 4.- Will you please explain 2 Timothy 2 verse 15 ? 5.- In Psalms 60 verses 1-3, who were the unknown people David fought against ? 6.- What does the Bible mean when it states, "the man of sin will take his seat in the temple of God" ? 7.- How do we know that the falling of the stars in May 1780 is the dark day from Bible prophecy ? 8.- Does prophecy have a different meaning in the context of 1 Samuel 10 verse 10 ? 9.- How do we obtain deliverance from evil spirits ? 10.- Why is “wisdom” referenced in a feminine context in Proverbs 4, if Solomon is talking about the Holy Spirit ? 11.- If I have taken God’s name in vain and then asked for forgiveness, have I been forgiven ? 12.- Is it ever okay to threaten someone with violence if they are insulting a family member ? 13.- Is it idolatry for Christians to do the sign of the cross ? 14.- When did the Bible get divided into verses with punctuation added, and by whom ? 15.- Who wrote the Book of Romans ? 16.- Genesis 19 verse 8 refers to the daughters of Lot being virgins. How is this possible if they had been married before ? 17.- Regarding Genesis 15 verse 10, what was the significance of the birds and why were they not cut in half ? 18.- Were Jacob's wives twins ? 19.- Are you born of the Spirit the moment you accept Christ ? If not, when does that take place ? 20.- When will the redeemed give account for anything ? 21.- Should Christians invest, and if so, how should they invest ? 22.- Why did God say that eating swine's flesh is an abomination ? Is this spiritual or symbolic ? 23.- Can you please explain what it means in the Bible when it refers to Jesus as the Son of David ?
