New 'Behind the Veil' Promo Video for 'Dune: Prophecy' Sci-Fi Series

"Everything to love, and nothing to hate." This is also exactly what I'm hoping for with this show. HBO has unveiled a promo featurette for the new sci-fi series Dune: Prophecy, which will begin streaming on Max later this week. Looks like it'll be worth the wait. Set 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, before the universe knew them as the Bene Gesserit... This is directly connected to Denis Villeneuve's two (so far) brilliant Dune movies but takes place in the distant past. Based on the book "Sisterhood of Dune" by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Frank's son). This exciting behind-the-scenes look at the epic interplanetary series includes tons of making of shots + interview bits edited into clips of footage from the big sci-fi series. Dune: Prophecy stars Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Jade Anouka, Chris Mason, Jodhi May, Josh Heuston, Tabu, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Aoife Hinds, & Shalom Brune-Franklin. We've seen a handful of stellar trailers for this series already, with this promo being a final reminder to add this to your watchlist in time for its imminent debut. I'm impressed by the scope and scale of this HBO show - it's connected […]

A Looming Political Earthquake: Inflation Reduction Act’s unprecedented climate spending—much of it uninvestigated—may soon lead to unprecedented scandals

CNN: At UN climate summit, ‘diplomats are fretting over what Trump’s victory means for the planet’ – ‘It’s a depressing story’

CNN on Trump's victory: A U-turn on US climate policy could be disastrous for the planet, as it raises the risk of emulation. When America does something on the world stage, at least some countries tend to follow. “Paris is one of those agreements where you need a critical mass of economic powers and emitters, past and present, to actually be able to address this challenge,” said Oli Brown, an associate fellow at the London-based think tank Chatham House. ...

“And it will allow big emitters to not take the kind of ambitious action that’s needed, because they don’t want to be at a competitive disadvantage to the US, if the US is unburdened by any sense of collective responsibility,” he told CNN. ...

But the real sting is, that as the world’s biggest economy, the US has more power than any other country to fund climate change action in the developing world. Even if it stays in the Paris Agreement, an “America First” Trump administration is unlikely to be more generous with grants and loans for other countries’ green transition. That alone sets the talks up for failure — their main aim was to agree to a transfer $1 trillion a year from wealthy countries and institutions to help developing nations build clean energy systems and to adapt to worsening extreme weather, like heat waves, floods, drought, storms and wildfires.

pr

President of UN climate summit: ‘At Cop29, we must treat the climate crisis with the same urgency as Covid – history shows it can be done’

To prevent the gravest human, ecological and economic toll, it is crucial to cut emissions before it’s too late. Without investing in adaptation measures that fortify nations against the impacts of climate-driven events such as hurricanes and droughts, widespread damage becomes inevitable. The greater the damage, the more it will cost countries to rebuild. Prevention is preferable to cure, but our planet is already ailing. Immediate action is crucial to halt further decline.

Not only is such funding necessary, it is possible. This has been done before: when struck with another crisis, Covid-19, advanced economies marshalled $8tn over the course of just 48 months to support their citizens and businesses. The challenge of the day was met. We must treat climate change with the same urgency.

Comercial. Censurado. Controvertido. Sexual. Traducido a 32 idiomas.

BLU PRISONER

New release: exciting news this week from Imprint Australia, who will releasing a new limited-edition Blu-ray edition of The Prisoner in June! Not only will this set include most of the features from previous sets by Network, it will also include new bonus content, a 120-page booklet- plus- some episodes of Danger Man in hi-definition! As far as we know, the 2K transfers from the original negatives will be the same files as the anniversary set from Network (stunning!) and the Imprint sets tend to be region-free, which means viewers in the US will be able to view the discs. I still recommend an all-region player for best flexibility.  Check out all the details at Imprint. And while you're there, check out their beautiful Tara King Avengers set (the Emma Peel set is now out of stock). If you missed out on the Network Prisoner set, this is a great time to add this amazing classic series to your library, and get cool new bonus features in the deal! And if you've never seen it, all I can say is that The Prisoner is a top favorite from the era and is like a mod-spy tumble down the rabbit hole into a Cold War Wonderland. PRISONER FIGURES

New release: Wandering Planet launched a new Kickstarter today for their Wave 2 Prisoner figures! If you missed out on Wave 1, don't miss this chance to order new action figures from the classic Patrick McGoohan series, The Prisoner! PRISONER-SCARLET ANNIVERSARY

It was on this day in 1967 that two groundbreaking programs made their debut: Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner and Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. If mystery/adventure of the mid-1960s captured the youthful and optimistic energy of the jet-setters, these two programs marked a growing sense of consequences and uncertainty for agents during the later part of the decade.

McGoohan's Danger Man had been on the air since September, 1960. His stories often exposed the darker side of espionage: moral sacrifices deemed necessary to protect the common good. His John Drake, though slightly insubordinate, presented the image of a man who could recognize -but look beyond- the distasteful consequences of the job in order to carry out his duties. His critique rose to a boiling point in a number of episodes (Yesterday's Enemies, To Our Best Friend) and the theme ultimately was channeled into his next project, The Prisoner (1967-1968). McGoohan's character in The Prisoner, now an unnamed spy, has resigned as a matter of principle and finds himself kidnapped to a remote village, where he undergoes constant psychological torture to determine why he resigned and whether he will spill his secrets. Capturing a counter-culture-era mistrust of authority, he never discovers if his torturers are the enemy after his secrets or his own people testing his loyalty (or indeed, his own mind). Known as Number 6 in the Village, McGoohan's character epitomized the theme of individual freedom, liberty, and rebellion against a surveillance state and conformity. There was a 2010 mini-series based on The Prisoner, starring Ian McKellen. Although it didn't measure up to the original, the show did a good job bringing the "Village" concept up to date in the form of complacent, consumeristic communities we see developing around trends in globalization. Even in my area, I note the trend to build large apartment complexes above retail streets, for example.

Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation programs, high-octane Sci-Spy adventures, had appealed to kids throughout the early 1960s. After establishing himself with inventive programs like SupercarFireball XL5, and Stingray, Anderson and his team found international success with Thunderbirds (1965-1966). The show featured their familiar cocktail of futuristic gadgets and intrigue, while the blockbuster stories focused on a secret organization of international rescuers keeping the world safe. But as Anderson and his wife, Sylvia, moved into the later part of the decade, they shifted toward the darker sides of human nature and the theme of consequences, echoing conversations around the Vietnam War and Cold War.

The next project would be Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-1968), which began with a story about a team of space explorers discovering a mysterious city of energy. In a rash act of misunderstanding, the explorers mistake an innocent Mysteron gadget as a weapon and obliterate the city from the planet. As it turns out, however, the aliens can re-create any matter that has been destroyed. Neat trick, and essential to the show's premise. The city magically returns and the Mysterons vow to take revenge on humanity for its cruel, aggressive nature. The program was a much more violent affair. The hero of the piece, Captain Scarlet, began the series as an alien-constructed double agent assigned to assassinate the world's president. There was even a devastating suicide-bomber scene in the pilot and the series is packed with violent killings and ominous plots to destroy the earthmen. Once Scarlet was killed, however, he was able to regenerate and escape alien control. This established the arc of each episode, where the hero ultimately experiences a brutal death followed by a resurrection. His colleague, Captain Black, remained a rogue killer-agent for the enemy. Children's programming? Dark times indeed! Style fans take note: the costumes in the series were inspired by Pierre Cardins' space fashions!

If these two programs illustrated transitions in the popular imagination, the trend seemed to take an odd turn by the following year. In a visit to the 1968 Exhibit in Oakland some years back, I was struck by the odd juxtaposition of truly violent historical experiences in the news, public anxiety and protest, and the strange effort of American mainstream TV, in contrast to these UK shows discussed above, to create a lulling oasis with shows like Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, and I Dream of Jeanie. Independent filmmakers had more liberty to present subversive material, creating films such as Easy Rider, The Monkees Head, and Night of the Living Dead. In the UK, The Prisoner and Captain Scarlet illustrated a culture trying to cope with the circumstances of the times within a mainstream medium. Whether it was questioning freedom and individuality, or consequences and culpability, these programs stand the test of time because they weren't afraid to ask questions and to frame them in ways that evoked excitement, sparkled with cutting-edge playful fashion and design, and explored real empathy. Storm Tactics Preview: Now on VIDEO DOWNLOAD

VIDEO DOWNLOAD
TheSailingChannel.TV has just released Lin and Larry Pardey's Storm Tactics: Cape Horn Tested as a HIGH QUALITY VIDEO DOWNLOAD available in both Windows Media (WMV) and QuickTime (MOV) versions suitable for full screen viewing. PRICE: JUST $12.99.
Just pay with Paypal or your Credit Card, download and watch full screen on your PC or MAC.

This 84 minute video delivers the skills you need to weather storms with confidence. If you like the preview, buy the DVD. It's the next best thing to having Lin and Larry Pardey onboard, coaching you on storm tactics as the seas build and the rigging howls.

Closing in on 200,000 miles of blue water voyaging, Lin and Larry Pardey are recognized as the sailing world's most experienced and knowledgeable cruising couple. In Storm Tactics, they provide a detailed look at the techniques and gear that have kept them safe at sea. "... I wanted to show how the sailor's safety valve--heaving-to-works, and the slick it creates. It's hard for people to imagine the almost magic effect of a slick as it saps the power of breaking waves...." - Larry Pardey.

"One of the reasons I wanted to sail east-to-west around Cape Horn was to take video shots proving that small vessels can safely weather storms if they are well outfitted and efficiently handled," Larry Pardey stated after his record-breaking voyage. Lin and Larry completed their against-the-wind rounding of the Great Southern Capes on board their engineless 29-foot Taleisin, weathering nine days of storm-force winds to reach Puerto Montt in Chile. There they interviewed several high-latitude voyagers, prepared the narrative, and shot further detailed footage to complete the Storm Tactics video, a project Lin and Larry conceived almost ten years ago. Read more about Storm tactics at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/storm_tactics/about_storm_tactics.htm

HANDBOOK
Add the Storm Tactics Handbook, recently revised 3rd Ed. to the Video and you've got the ultimate reference set. Price: $20.65. Modern methods of heaving-to for survival in extreme conditions. As in the first two editions of this book, Lin and Larry describe their concerns about the tendency of modern sailors to discard the classic methods used to bring sailing vessels of all sizes—from vast clipper ships to tiny yachts—through amazingly strong winds and heavy seas. “There is only one storm tactic that has the ability to sap the power of breaking seas,” they explain. With clear and concise diagrams, they proceed to show how heaving-to works and how even the most modern of yachts can be made to heave-to, whether with only sail power or with the assistance of a sea anchor. http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/pardey_books/books/storm_tactics_handbook.htm
Mario Vittone, a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer for 14 years, in an unsolicited testimony, wrote: “I have been on several rescues (and heard of many more) that would have been completely unnecessary if the sailboat captains aboard would have . . . practiced the skills taught by Lin and Larry Pardey. Not knowing how to heave-to in bad weather is as inexcusable as not knowing ‘red, right, return’.”

Sail with them across the Indian Ocean on board 29-foot, 9-inch Taleisin. Learn how they planned and executed a seven month "Champagne Safari on a Beer Budget," outfitting a 4X4 to reach remote corners of southern Africa. Share their memories of campfire evenings with Kalahari Bushmen, life in a sculptors' commune in Zimbabwe's northern reaches, and days of animal-watching at waterholes far from game reserves. Then voyage onward with them to Brazil, and see how two 14-year-old passengers led them into a unique, eight-month-long island encounter with nine Brazilian families who dreamed of their own off shore adventures. Finally, sail north through the Atlantic to Ireland's music-filled shores and a summer of history, classic sailing, and friendship.
Along the way, you'll learn some of the truisms that could help you get out adventuring sooner and more enjoyably—whether on the water or on land. You'll also come to know more about this longtime cruising couple who have been dubbed "the enablers" because of their enthusiasm and willingness to share their secrets for exploring the far corners of the world on a limited budget.
"After voyaging tens of thousands of engineless miles under sail, penning more useful marine books than Hiscock and Moitessier combined, and receiving more awards for their pursuits than Tom Hanks has for his, Lin and Larry Pardey are entitled to their well-earned nautical opinions."

From Don Street Antigua Race Week 1985. A one hour award-winning documentary by Charles Croft which lets you share the intense sailing action aboard Don Street's 80 year old, 44 foot, engineless yawl, "Iolaire" during Antigua Sailing Week, 1985, Iolarie's final appearance in one of the world's top sailing events.
Built in 1905, Don had sailed and raced "Iolaire" throughout the Caribbean for forty years while he developed his famous Imray-Iolair charts and the first comprehensive cruising guides that opened up the Caribbean to modern sailors. Antigua Sailing Week races became an annual event for Street and Iolaire since the first regatta in 1957. In 1985, Street decided to retire Iolaire from racing and they both went out in style, finishing only 5 points out of first place at race week's end. This award-winning documentary shows you what Caribbean racing was like in its golden years when the skippers all new each other and racing was more fun than business.

Practicing Heaving To with Larry Pardey

CLICK TO PLAY
Practicing Heaving to from the Pardey Offshore Sailing Series

Larry Pardey talks about the importance of practicing heaving to before you set off across an ocean. Heaving to allows you to park your boat at sea in any weather so you and your crew can rest, eat, and make repairs. Practicing heaving to includes becoming familiar with setting up your para-anchor and other gear at the dock so you know how it all works and you can check that all lines are running clear. Then you should practice heaving to underway, preferably in at least 30 knots of wind. Larry's comments are followed by some historic footage of the Pardey's sailing with a very nice classical 12 string guitar background.
The Pardey Offshore Sailing Series consists of all 5 Pardey videos as downloads or DVDs at a package discount price. The videos include Get Ready to Cruise, Get Ready to Cross Oceans, Storm Tactics, Cost Control While You Cruise, and Cruising Has No Limits — over 6 and a half hours of blue-water sailing instruction and adventure from two of the world's most experienced cruising sailors.
