HONOLULU (Dec.15) -- The East-West Center has been awarded a three-year grant totaling $275,000 from the Henry Luce Foundation to provide renewed support for the Korea-United States Journalists Exchange program.

HONOLULU (Nov. 18) -- The East-West Center (EWC) received two grants of $496,000 from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to support the U.S.- Timor-Leste   (USTL) and U.S.- South Pacific (USSP) Scholarship Programs. These programs aim to develop a corps of leaders who will contribute to political, economic, and social development in their home countries and strengthen relations with the United States.

HONOLULU (Oct. 20) – Groups of educators from Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia will be spending the next two weeks visiting schools in 11 U.S. states as part of an East-West Center program designed to foster mutual understanding between the United States and Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority nation in the world.

HONOLULU (Sept. 19) – Former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia Kim Beazley will speak on “Political Change and Alliance Continuity in U.S.-Australia Relations” at an Australian American Leadership Dialogue luncheon address on Wed., Sept. 24., at the East-West Center’s Hawai‘i Imin International Conference Center (Jefferson Hall, 1777 East-West Road).

Ten months ago, the Australian Labor Party under Kevin Rudd defeated the decade-long conservative coalition government of John Howard.  This November, the U.S. election will bring in a new American president.  These political transitions bring a new era to U.S.-Australian relations.

HONOLULU (Sept. 29) – East-West Center President Dr. Charles E. Morrison will speak on “U.S.-Asia Policy in Transition” at a luncheon meeting of the Friends of the East-West Center on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Halekulani Hotel’s Hau Terrace, 2199 Kalia Road.

Dr. Morrison will review critical issues, challenges and opportunities in U.S. relations with the Asia-Pacific region as we face an election and new U.S. leadership. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

HONOLULU (Sept. 30) -- Nearly 500 scholars, officials, educators and business leaders will gather in Bali November 13-15 for an international conference on the theme of "Building an Asia Pacific Community: Unity in Diversity."

Conference sessions will cover current regional issues, including international relations, security, democracy and Islam, global warming, volunteerism, gender issues, innovation, health, business, and social and cultural issues.

Among the featured speakers will be the new governor of Bali; Indonesia’s ministers of trade, people’s welfare and women’s empowerment; the U.S. ambassador to Indonesia; the governor of Hawaii; the president of the East-West Center; and business leaders.

HONOLULU (Aug. 7) — The East-West Center Association (EWCA) recently established two new alumni chapters in Southeast Asia.  The new chapters located in Aceh, Indonesia and Dili, Timor-Leste (East Timor) raises the number of chapters in the EWCA global network to 46.

HONOLULU (June 16) – The East-West Center (EWC) was awarded a three-year contract from NASA for a projected total of $826,639 to determine the effects of the explosive expansion of rubber cultivation in Montane Mainland Southeast Asia (MMSEA) on regional water and carbon dynamics.
 
"Hydrologic change within this region, which comprises approximately half of Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam and China’s Yunnan Province, could have serious consequences for the approximately 200 million inhabitants of mainland Southeast Asia’s lowlands and for the climate of monsoon Asia,” according to Jefferson Fox , East-West Center Senior Fellow, and member of the team heading up the project.

HONOLULU (June 12) – The Chief Justice of Indonesia’s Supreme Court has signed a formal agreement with the East-West Center in Honolulu and the War Crimes Studies Center at the University of California, Berkeley to expand the human-rights training that the two institutions have been providing to Indonesian law officials for several years through their joint Asian International Justice Initiative.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed at the East-West Center on June 6 details a five-year commitment to conduct training programs for Indonesian judges, prosecutors, police and the National Human Rights Commission in order to “improve knowledge of human rights standards and how they can be implemented and applied by key judicial actors to promote the rule of law and the effectiveness of human rights courts and investigations.”

A faculty of experts in the fields of human-rights advocacy and humanitarian law is slated to provide instruction starting May 11 at an advanced two-week training course in Bangkok, Thailand, on the key processes being used to address human-rights abuses in the Asia Pacific region.

HONOLULU (May 29) -- A group of 30 nature reserve managers and conservation officials from across China are currently in Hawai‘i wrapping up an innovative month-long training program during which they have been meeting with their counterparts at nature reserves across the United States to learn about conservation management strategies.

American and Asian Journalists to Focus on Issues

HONOLULU (Oct 22) – The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on October 12 to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) chaired by East-West Center Alumnus Dr. Rajendra Pachauri. This award, jointly shared with former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore, was “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change,” according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

HONOLULU (September 17) – Mary Townswick has taken up her new duties as visiting fellow and diplomat-in-residence at the East-West Center (EWC). Townswick, a 20-year veteran of the U.S Foreign Service, will serve in her new post until July 31, 2008. Townswick replaces Michael Yoder, also a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, as the EWC's diplomat-in-residence.

HONOLULU (October 4) –  The East-West Center’s (EWC) Asian International Justice Initiative Coordinator, Michelle Staggs, will speak about human rights challenges at U.N./local government partnered courts in Sierra Leone and Cambodia at an EWC evening forum on Wednesday, October 10. She will address the issue of inter-generational accountability 30 years after the Khmer Rouge period, as Cambodia prepares to confront the darkest part of its recent history.

HONOLULU (September 11) – The first planning workshop for an ecological approach to combating emerging infectious diseases (EID) in Southeast Asia will take place September 12-13, 2007 at the Melia Hotel in Hanoi. The East-West Center’s Director of Research, Nancy Lewis, and Senior Fellow Jefferson Fox are teaming up with leading public health researchers from Vietnam’s government and universities together with University of Hawai’i specialists to find ways to prevent and control EID in the region.

HONOLULU (September 5) – India’s consul general in San Francisco, (Ambassador) B.S. Prakash will address the changing profile of India and the impact on its relationship with the United States at a luncheon gathering at the East-West Center Monday, September 10.

HONOLULU (July 20) – The East-West Center’s 8th Senior Policy Seminar Luncheon, Critical Issues for U.S. Policy in the Asia Pacific Region, will be held Wednesday, August 8. The luncheon is being cosponsored by the EWC, the Pacific & Asian Affairs Council (PAAC), and the Friends of the East-West Center (FEWC).

The featured panelists, all with extensive foreign policy experience, are Amb. Han Sung-Joo, president of Korea University and the Seoul Forum for International Affairs; Amb. Wu Jianmin, president of the China Foreign Affairs University; Dr. Lawrence J. Lau, president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Amb. Stephen W. Bosworth, dean of the Fletcher School, Tufts University.

HONOLULU (July 31) – The East-West Center (EWC) and the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding Tuesday (July 31) for cooperation in energy policy and planning research. The three-year agreement establishes a framework for exchange of research and joint projects.

Ki-Yual Bang, CEO and President of the KEEI, said the new agreement will “play a significant role in promoting energy cooperation through joint studies, information exchanges, and the exchange of research personnel between Honolulu and Seoul.” He added “by working jointly the EWC and KEEI can develop much needed energy policy options.”

HONOLULU (June 22) – To many it’s magic. But to others the shamanic tradition is a very real cultural heritage and a continuing part of everyday life. These healers and ceremonial leaders continue to play a leading role in the Dao, San Chay, Tay, Nung, Hmong, and San Diu minority groups living in the mountains of Vietnam.

The shamanic arts will be spotlighted in the upcoming Shaman Arts of Vietnam exhibition at the East-West Center Gallery. The exhibition gets underway Sunday, July 1 at 2 p.m. with a gala opening reception and runs through Monday, September 10.

It may appear to be small and simple, but the pavilion plays an important role in the daily life of the people of South and Southeast Asia. Be it a Royal sala in Thailand, a rural bus stop in India, or simply a welcomed shelter and sanctuary from the relentless hot summer sun or cool monsoon rains, throughout the region the pavilion is held in high esteem.

Sunday, April 22, from 2 to 3 p.m., the East-West Center Gallery will present a comprehensive look at this much-overlooked structure and its role in regional culture. Dr. Kazi K. Ashraf, associate professor at the School of Architecture at University of Hawaii-Manoa, will take gallery-goers through the world of the pavilion from its fundamental function to its ornamental glory.

HONOLULU (April 5) — East-West Center Senior Fellow Emerita Meheroo Jussawalla’s recently published book, On Six Dollars to America: A Tale of Adventure, Courage and Reward (Paperback, $13.99, Amazon.com) takes the reader on a fascinating journey. It is a trip that not only chronicles Jussawalla’s passage from her birthplace in India to the United States, but also an excursion through the mind of a captivating individual.

HONOLULU (March 9) – The East-West Center (EWC) received two grants totaling over $105-thousand dollars from the British Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, for two projects supporting the Khmer Rouge Tribunal. Both projects are part of the Asian International Justice Initiative, a partnership between the EWC and the War Crimes Studies Center at the University of California, Berkeley.

EWC President Charles E. Morrison says, "We certainly appreciate these grants in underwriting our efforts to support development of the rule of law in Cambodia and to help the Khmer Rouge Tribunal bring some closure to a horrific period in Cambodian history."

HONOLULU (May 2, 2011) – The U.S. discovery and killing of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan has resulted in intensified focus on the crucial but troubled relationship between the two nations.
East-West Center research fellow Dr. Shabbir Cheema is available to comment on such issues as possible impact of the Bin Laden operation on U.S.-Pakistan relations going forward, as well as reactions within Pakistan itself. HONOLULU (April 18, 2011) — Thirteen journalists from Pakistan and America are currently visiting each other’s countries as part of the East-West Center’s inaugural Pakistan-U.S. Journalists Exchange.
At the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, the journalists participated in focused discussions on the complex U.S.-Pakistan relationship and issues facing the media in both countries. The Pakistani participants then travelled to Washington, D.C., New York City, and Columbia, Missouri, while the Americans visited Islamabad and Lahore, Pakistan.
They will meet again in Honolulu to exchange notes and impressions, and will participate in a public panel discussion on U.S. engagement in Pakistan on April 21.
