of Tasty Coffee By snook.ca Published On :: Wed, 19 Jun 2024 15:10:54 +0000 Today’s coffee is tasty—different tasty. It feels thick on the tongue, like a high percentage chocolate, with a bitterness bordering on sweetness. Subtle notes are difficult to find, hidden amongst the clouds of creamy, frothy whole milk that blankets—nay, marries—the espresso. Today is not a day for subtlety. It is a day to be consumed. And this pain au chocolat ain’t bad, either. Reply via email Full Article

of How Can We Better Support the Mental Well-Being of Veterans Returning from Service? By www.bu.edu Published On :: Wed, 06 Nov 2024 08:12:39 EST Military service is difficult, dangerous, and demanding. But for some veterans, returning to civilian life can also be a challenge. Going from the structure of active duty—with its purpose-driven roles, full-throttle environment, and sense of camaraderie—to the relatively humdrum life of a civilian can be jarring, particularly for veterans who’ve experienced trauma during their service and may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Researchers at Boston University, including Dawne Vogt and Casey Taft—both professors of psychiatry in the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine—are utilizing a variety of data-backed strategies to support veterans struggling to adapt to their new normal lives. of Stephan Moccio: The Power of Pauses in Life (and Music) By chasejarvis.com Published On :: Wed, 15 May 2024 13:00:12 +0000 Words and tools are powerful, but are they our only way of making a mark? *Pause for emphasis* Stephan Moccio doesn’t think so. An artist, composer, and producer, he’s the name behind some of the most well-known songs and soundtracks on the planet. But surprisingly enough, all that success with sound has come through silence. In this podcast, I have the privilege of sitting down with him to discuss how strategic refrain and thought can benefit creative power. Creativity as a Muscle Skill can come naturally, but people rarely get to the top through their natural-born talents alone. Even 6’9″ LeBron James wouldn’t be where he is as a basketball player without putting in the unseen hours of success. Whether physical or mental, training effectively determines performance. “I’ve learned that to get great things and to achieve great things requires a lot of work behind the curtain…” Creative practice isn’t different from other forms of training in that making a habit out of it is hard. We all have lives outside of our passions, and those passions aren’t always fully funded. Many of us work day jobs while pursuing creative endeavors. Stephan has had to balance paying bills, raising a... The post Stephan Moccio: The Power of Pauses in Life (and Music) first appeared on Chase Jarvis. of The Spiritual Journey of Entrepreneurs (that Nobody Talks About) By chasejarvis.com Published On :: Wed, 29 May 2024 13:00:56 +0000 Entrepreneurs are a different breed of people. Where others squirm at the thought of making self-managed business endeavors a sole source of income, we see an opportunity for uncapped riches and prosperity. It takes a certain mind to be willing to ignore what society says about breaking the mold and pursue big ideas against difficult odds. Yet folks like John Mackey prove that a defiant spirit can indeed lead to abundant success. I’m excited to have the 44-year CEO of Whole Foods back on the podcast once again. In this episode, our discussion focuses on the spiritual journey of entrepreneurs – that doesn’t get talked about nearly as much as it should – and explores his first-hand experience traveling it as the founder of one of America’s most iconic grocery chains. Incorporating Personal Values Into Work John’s personal values were deeply influential in shaping the development of Whole Foods Market from its early days. He believed strongly in the importance of staying true to one’s principles and letting them guide decision-making and actions as an entrepreneur. It’s a smart strategy – you aren’t going to get very far with a business idea unless you genuinely believe in it and are... of Tobias Frere-Jones on Apple's Choice of Helvetica as a UI Typeface By Published On :: Wed, 04 Jun 2014 00:00:00 +0000 Co.Design asked Tobias Frere-Jones of Hoefler & Co. to give his thoughts on Apple’s choice of Helvetica as an interface typeface for the upcoming OS X Yosemite update: Despite its grand reputation, Helvetica can’t do everything. It works well in big sizes, but it can be really weak in small sizes. Shapes like ‘C’ and ‘S’ curl back into themselves, leaving tight “apertures”–the channels of white between a letter’s interior and exterior. So each shape halts the eye again and again, rather than ushering it along the line. The lowercase ‘e,’ the most common letter in English and many other languages, takes an especially unobliging form. These and other letters can be a pixel away from being some other letter, and we’re left to deal with flickers of doubt as we read. This reminds me of what Erik Spiekerman wrote about Helvetica: [Helvetica] really wasn’t designed for small sizes on screens. Words like milliliter can be very difficult to decipher. If you ever had to read or write a password with 1, i, l or I, you know the problem. Still, I wouldn’t keep Lucida Grande for HiDPI displays. With a 2× resolution jump (4× pixels) pixel fitting becomes less of an issue, and pixel optimized typefaces like Lucida Grande begin to look crude in comparison with typefaces made primarily for print. Legibility obviously still matters just as much, but the choice need no longer be bound to fonts optimized for low resolution displays. Full Article
