20/06/2012 - The Slovak Republic must urgently meet its obligations under the Convention it signed 12 years ago and introduce an effective corporate liability regime so that Slovak companies are held accountable for the bribery of foreign public officials in cross-border business deals, says a new OECD report.

This project aims to support the Slovak Republic as it seeks to create a clear rationale for the Regional Development Agencies Integrated Network which currently comprises 38 agencies.

The Slovak Republic is one of the most dynamic economies in the euro area. The country has continued to converge rapidly towards the living standards of advanced OECD economies. However, the Slovak Republic should continue on its path of reform to achieve balanced, fair and sustainable growth, according to a new OECD report.

As a further sign of international efforts to crack down on tax offenders, 12 more countries have signed, or committed to sign, the OECD’s Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters. In addition, another 6 countries have ratified the Convention.

The Slovak Republic has become the 27th member of the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), the leading international forum for bilateral providers of development co-operation.

Country profiles highlight some key findings from TALIS 2013 for individual countries and economies

Unemployment rose substantially in the Slovak Republic as a result of the crisis and has only declined slowly since reaching a peak of 14.8% of the labour force in early 2010. At 13.3% in August 2014, the unemployment rate remains one of the highest among developed countries and is twice as high as the OECD average.

Economic recovery is picking up in the Slovak Republic, but regional disparities and high unemployment must be addressed to ensure balanced inclusive growth over the long-term, according to the latest OECD Economic Survey of the Slovak Republic.

This book provides, from an international perspective, an independent analysis of major issues facing the educational evaluation and assessment framework, current policy initiatives, and possible future approaches in the Slovak Republic.

The tax burden in the Slovak Republic increased by 1.5 percentage points from 28.1% to 29.6%, the third highest rise amongst member countries in 2013. The OECD average was an increase of 0.4 percentage points from 33.7% to 34.1%. The Slovak standard VAT rate is 20%, which is above the OECD average. The average VAT/GST standard rate in the OECD was 19.1% on 1 January 2014.

Going for Growth 2015: Key findings for Slovak Republic

This report was prepared by the Educational Policy Institute, Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, as an input to the OECD Review of Policies to Improve the Effectiveness of Resource Use in Schools (School Resources Review).

The Secretary-General participated in the GLOBSEC Bratislava Global Security Forum alongside the Prime Ministers of Poland, the Slovak Republic, Hungary and the Czech Republic. He also met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Slovak Republic.

Mr. Gurría received the International Peace Prize from Slovakia 2015 Award, granted by the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He also presented two OECD education reviews on the Slovak Republic and held meetings with government ministers.

The Secretary-General addressed the Informal Meeting of EU Finance Ministers (ECOFIN) on the topic of improving tax certainty and fighting base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS), tax crime and the financing of terrorism.
