Today, the Department of Justice announced awards of more than $122 million to support public safety efforts in Michigan. The funds will help law enforcement agencies and community organizations in jurisdictions across the state fight gun, gang, drug and sexual violence, and bring criminals to justice.

The Department of Justice today announced awards of more than $29 million to support public safety efforts in the Northern District of Ohio. The funding from the Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) will support violent crime reduction, opioid/substance abuse reduction efforts, victim services, transitional housing for domestic violence victims, law enforcement activities, justice mental health, and juvenile justice.

The Tax Division works to provide a valuable internship experience by attempting to ensure that legal interns assist in as many aspects of the Division’s work as possible, and that interns are provided written or oral feedback on their assignments.   

Interns are assigned to a section for the semester and work closely with that section’s attorneys on a wide range of issues, to the extent allowed by law. Interns are frequently asked to research legal issues that arise in pending cases, but may also be asked to prepare legal memoranda or draft pleadings, briefs, motions, and other legal documents. Interns may assist with discovery, including drafting interrogatories, document requests, and subpoenas. Interns may have the opportunity to help attorneys prepare for arguments, trials, and hearings, and may have the opportunity to attend and observe those that are local.

Interns work closely with attorneys and paralegals on substantive matters in all stages of litigation. Indeed, the position offers a unique experience in public service. The legal and medical issues at stake in each case vary greatly. Attorneys and staff in the group handle heavy case loads, and while streamlined procedures are utilized, cases frequently involve complex liability and damages issues. The Group is obliged to ensure that the Vaccine Trust Fund, from which damage awards are paid, is protected and, where eligibility criteria are met, that fair compensation is distributed to those whom Congress has intended. Attorneys appear frequently before the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which affords interns the opportunity to gain experience in trial and appellate practice.

For the Fall semester, interns should be able to start in early September. For the Spring semester, interns should be able to start by early January. We accept both full and part-time students during the academic year, and ask that all interns commit to at least 16-20 hours a week, for approximately 12 weeks. A former senior executive with Alstom S.A. A federal jury in Detroit, Michigan, found a Colombian man guilty of all charges in a nine-count indictment charging him with Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) conspiracy and other violent crimes, announced Assistant Attorney General Brian A. The Department of Justice announced today that the Western Union Remission Fund began its first distribution of approximately $153 million in funds forfeited to the U.S. government from the Western Union Company (Western Union) to over 109,000 victims located in the United States and abroad. These victims, many of whom were elderly victims of consumer fraud and abuse, will be recovering the full amount of their losses.

The Department of Justice announced today that it has repatriated to Malaysia approximately $300 million (RM 1.292 billion) in additional funds misappropriated from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), Malaysia’s investment development fund, and laundered through financial institutions in several jurisdictions, including the United States, Switzerland, Singapore and Luxembourg.

At the start of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the Department of Justice today announced that on April 20, the Madoff Victim Fund (MVF) began its fifth distribution of approximately $378.5 million in funds forfeited to the U.S. Government in connection with the Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC (BLMIS) fraud scheme, bringing the total distributed to over $2.7 billion to nearly 38,000 victims worldwide.

The owner and Chief Executive Officer of a Republic of Korea–based company, DK Marine, that provided ship husbanding services to the U.S. Navy pleaded guilty today for his role in a bribery conspiracy.

The attorney provides advice and recommendations to Bureau officials on a wide range of complex legal problems, including constitutional laws issues, criminal law and procedure, administrative law and asset forfeiture. The incumbent will serve as the section chief over the External Audit and Liaison Section within the Office of Compliance.  This section leads and oversees DEA's engagement with the Department of Justice - Office of Inspector General (OIG), the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), and similar oversight entities that conduct audits and performance reviews of DEA programs.  The section is responsible for the collection and delivery of requested documents and subject matter experts who can provide the most accurate information to OIG, GAO, and others during an external audit, review, inspection, or analysis.  As a specific audit draws to a close, the incumbent will represent DEA's equities in reviewing the draft report to ensure fairness and accuracy of information published in a final report.  Once published, the section will work with internal stakeholders to implement auditor recommendations and resolve audit results.

The U. S. Attorney's Office is seeking an experienced attorney to fill one Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in the Criminal Division of its Salt Lake City office.  AUSAs in the Criminal Division advise federal law enforcement agents on criminal investigations, present criminal cases to the grand jury, prepare and argue a broad range of motions, and try criminal cases before the United States District Court.  Candidates should be capable of handling a variety of significant and complex criminal prosecutions, including white collar and economic crime, violent crime, narcotics and immigration.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The District is currently accepting applications for Civil Chief. 

The Civil Division is responsible for representing the federal government and its agencies and employees in civil litigation in the District. Two primary areas of practice are tort cases, including medical malpractice and a variety of personal injury cases, and Title VII cases alleging discrimination in hiring and employment practices by agencies of the United States. Other areas of practice include civil rights, immigration, bankruptcy, debts owed the United States or its agencies, breach of contract, judicial review of administrative findings, and injunctive proceedings. AUSAs in the Civil Division are active at both the trial and appellate levels, taking depositions, preparing and answering interrogatories, negotiating for settlement, engaging in motions practice, trying cases, and writing and arguing appeals.

About the Position:  On a regular and recurring basis, this office fills the Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) positions that it has been allotted. These temporary, at will positions, make up the management team of the office, under the control, supervision and direction of the United States Attorney. AUSAs selected for these supervisory positions will be responsible for exercising dynamic leadership and efficiently and effectively managing the employees in their respective sections to accomplish the mission of the Department and the specific goals of this office, as set forth by the United States Attorney.
