da Rubidium tetrafluoridobromate(III): redetermination of the crystal structure from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2019-11-29 Single crystals of rubidium tetrafluoridobromate(III), RbBrF4, were grown by melting and recrystallizing RbBrF4 from its melt. This is the first determination of the crystal structure of RbBrF4 using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. We confirmed that the structure contains square-planar [BrF4]− anions and rubidium cations that are coordinated by F atoms in a square-antiprismatic manner. The compound crystallizes in the KBrF4 structure type. Atomic coordinates and bond lengths and angles were determined with higher precision than in a previous report based on powder X-ray diffraction data [Ivlev et al. (2015). Z. Anorg. Allg. da Tris(1H-benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)amine methanol trisolvate By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-03-05 The structure of the tertiary amine tris(1H-benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)amine (C24H21N7, abbreviated ntb) has been previously reported twice as solvates, namely the monohydrate and the acetonitrile–methanol–water (1/0.5/1.5) solvate, both with the tripodal conformation formed via multiple hydrogen bonds. Now, we report the trimethanol adduct, ntb·3CH3OH, where the amine has the stair conformation featuring one benzimidazole group oriented in the opposite direction from the other two. The asymmetric unit contains one-half amine, completed through the mirror plane m in space group Pmn21 to form the ntb molecule, with the H atom for each imidazole moiety equally disordered between both N sites available in the imidazole ring. The asymmetric unit also contains one and a half methanol molecules, one being placed in general position with the hydroxy H atom disordered over two sites with occupancy ratio 1:1, while the other lies on the m mirror plane, and has thus its hydroxy H atom disordered by symmetry. As in the previously reported solvates, all imine and amine groups of the ntb molecules and the methanol molecules are involved in N—H⋯O and O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds. In the title compound, however, the involved H atom is systematically a disordered H atom provided by an imidazole group or a methanol molecule. Full Article text
da Bis(3-methyl-1-propyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) bis(4,6-disulfanidyl-4,6-disulfanylidene-1,2,3,5,4,6-tetrathiadiphosphinane-κ3S2,S4,S6)nickel By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-04-24 The title salt, (PMIM)2[Ni(P2S8)2] (PMIM = 3-methyl-1-propyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium, C7H13N2+), consists of a nickel–thiophosphate anion charge-balanced by a pair of crystallographically independent PMIM cations. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n. The structure exhibits the known [Ni(P2S8)2]2− anion with two unique imidazolium cations in the asymmetric unit. Whereas one PMIM cation is well ordered, the other is disordered over two orientations with refined occupancies of 0.798 (2) and 0.202 (2). The salt was prepared directly from the elements in the ionic liquid [PMIM]CF3SO3. Whereas one of the PMIM cations is well behaved (it does not exhibit disorder even in the propyl side chain), the other is found in two overlapping positions. The refined occupancies for the two orientations are roughly 80:20. Here, too, there appears to be little disorder in the propyl arm. Full Article text
da Redetermination of diammonium trivanadate, (NH4)2V3O8 By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-04-09 The crystal structure of (NH4)2V3O8 has been reported twice using single-crystal X-ray data [Theobald et al. (1984). J. Phys. Chem. Solids, 45, 581–587; Range et al. (1988). Z. Naturforsch. Teil B, 43, 309–317]. In both cases, the orientation of the ammonium cation in the asymmetric unit was poorly defined: in Theobald's study, the shape and dimensions were constrained for NH4+, while in Range's study, H atoms were not included. In the present study, we collected a highly redundant data set for this ternary oxide, at 0.61 Å resolution, using Ag Kα radiation. These accurate data reveal that the NH4+ cation is disordered by rotation around a non-crystallographic axis. The rotation axis coincides with one N—H bond lying in the mirror m symmetry element of space-group type P4bm, and the remaining H sites were modelled over two disordered positions, with equal occupancy. It therefore follows that the NH4+ cations filling the space available in the (001) layered structure formed by (V3O8)2– ions do not form strong N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds with the mixed-valent oxidovanadate(IV,V) anions. This feature could have consequences for the Li-ion intercalation properties of this material, which is used as a cathode for supercapacitors. Full Article text

Four 1,2,4-triazole groups of the ligand link two AgI atoms, as well as AgI and VV centres, forming the heterobimetallic coordination cluster {AgI2(VVO2F2)2(tr)4}. VV exists as a vanadium oxofluoride anion and possesses a distorted trigonal–bipyramidal coordination environment [VO2F2N]. A carboxylic acid functional group of the ligand stays in a neutral form and is involved in hydrogen bonding with solvent water molecules and VO2F2− ions of adjacent molecules. The extended hydrogen-bonding network is responsible for the crystal packing in the structure. Full Article text

da checkCIF validation ALERTS: what they mean and how to respond By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-01-01 Authors of a paper that includes a new crystal-structure determination are expected to not only report the structural results of interest and their interpretation, but are also expected to archive in computer-readable CIF format the experimental data on which the crystal-structure analysis is based. Additionally, an IUCr/checkCIF validation report will be required for the review of a submitted paper. Such a validation report, automatically created from the deposited CIF file, lists as ALERTS not only potential errors or unusual findings, but also suggestions for improvement along with interesting information on the structure at hand. Major ALERTS for issues are expected to have been acted on already before the submission for publication or discussed in the associated paper and/or commented on in the CIF file. In addition, referees, readers and users of the data should be able to make their own judgment and interpretation of the underlying experimental data or perform their own calculations with the archived data. All the above is consistent with the FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) initiative [Helliwell (2019). Struct. Dyn. 6, 05430]. Validation can also be helpful for less experienced authors in pointing to and avoiding of crystal-structure determination and interpretation pitfalls. The IUCr web-based checkCIF server provides such a validation report, based on data uploaded in CIF format. Alternatively, a locally installable checkCIF version is available to be used iteratively during the structure-determination process. ALERTS come mostly as short single-line messages. There is also a short explanation of the ALERTS available through the IUCr web server or with the locally installed PLATON/checkCIF version. This paper provides additional background information on the checkCIF procedure and additional details for a number of ALERTS along with options for how to act on them. Full Article text

da Crystal structure of imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium-based hybrid salt (C13H12N3)2[MnCl4] By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-02-06 A new organic–inorganic hybrid salt [L]2[MnCl4] (I) where L+ is the 2-methyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)imidazo[1,5-a]pyridinium cation, is built of discrete organic cations and tetrachloridomanganate(II) anions. The L+ cation was formed in situ in the oxidative cyclocondensation of 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde and CH3NH2·HCl in methanol. The structure was refined as a two-component twin using PLATON (Spek, 2020) to de-twin the data. The twin law (−1 0 0 0 − 1 0 0.5 0 1) was applied in the refinement where the twin component fraction refined to 0.155 (1). The compound crystallizes in the space group P21/c with two crystallographically non-equivalent cations in the asymmetric unit, which possess similar structural conformations. The fused pyridinium and imidazolium rings of the cations are virtually coplanar [dihedral angles are 0.89 (18) and 0.78 (17)°]; the pendant pyridyl rings are twisted by 36.83 (14) and 36.14 (13)° with respect to the planes of the remaining atoms of the cations. The tetrahedral MnCl42– anion is slightly distorted with the Mn—Cl distances falling in the range 2.3469 (10)–2.3941 (9) Å. The distortion value of 0.044 relative to the ideal tetrahedron was obtained by continuous shape measurement (CShM) analysis. In the crystal, the cations and anions form separate stacks propagating along the a-axis direction. The organic cations display weak π–π stacking.
