ui Christmas 2017: The Dapper Guide for men By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 24 Dec 2017 03:32:16 GMT We know it's the ladies who are all about 'what to wear for that New Year's eve party?', but the gentlemen need to clean up too, right? If you are wondering whether to go all-out formal or casual chic, let's help you out. Here are looks - made up of smart basics and separates, as well as standout pieces - that will set you up for that once-in-a-year party. Pic/Pradeep Dhivar A Timeless CombinationAkshay Tejwani in HP Su MisuraRiaan says: Men love blues, no matter what anyone may say. Blue is the new black, the fashion experts will tell you. And for that very reason, we picked a classic navy suit and white shirt. You can't go wrong with these colours and a well-tailored suit will see you through a New Year's eve party quite effortlessly as it is simple yet sharp. Note, however, that the cut has to be impeccable. For this particular look, dress it down a bit and not use a tie, to keep it a bit easier. That said, I did add a pocket square to add a dash of colour and break the monotony of the suit jacket. Elegance with restraint is a good idea. Pic/Bipin Kokate The Edgy LookChirag Sachanandani in Celio Riaan says: Possibly, one of the most indispensable pieces of the season, the bomber has been lauded as a layering essential in every man's wardrobe. People living in warmer places need not worry because these days, there are lighter variations available, even in cotton and linen. Pair the bomber over distressed jeans to give it a nice rugged flavour. Under the bomber, add a bit of a geeky detail, like a Star Wars tee. In keeping with current trends, pair the look with chic white sneakers, as opposed to boots or suede lace-ups, which are a more traditional option. Pic/Pradeep Dhivar Full-Out FormalMohit Sirothiya in Monsieur MRiaan says: For our three-piece suit, we chose a grey and not a blue, which is common. This suit features an elegant notch lapel, with black satin piping detailing, to highlight the sharpness of the notch point. The notch point complements the jawline and neck alignment. The waistcoat has a wide neck to provide a stronger chest structure. The fitted trousers with a narrow break helps tie in the look perfectly. Pic/Pradeep Dhivar The Quintessential DandyAkshay Tejwani in HP Su MisuraRiaan says: This look is perfect for a modern guy who does not hesitate to experiment with colour, texture and patterns. It is what the Italians like to call spezzato, which literally translates to using different statement separates in one look. Mix and match starting with a blazer featuring grey checks. To complement the checked blazer, paired with a tailored black shirt and paired it with slim-fit navy chinos. Keep the other elements of the look simple in order to let the blazer stand out. While the colour palette remains simple, it certainly makes a bold statement. Pic/Bipin Kokate Casual ChicChirag Sachanandani in Celio Riaan says: This look is perfect for a holiday party with friends. Nothing says casual elegance quite like the classic shirt and pullover combination. The idea is to let the collar peek out of the cardigan to break the monotony of colour. Pair a classic white Oxford shirt with a bright red cardigan. And since beige chinos are always stylish, add them to the look. The white and red, toned down by the beige chinos make it so effortless. Finally, to keep it cool and upbeat, opt for white sneakers over leather shoes or lace-ups. Roll up the cuff of your chinos to show off some ankle. ui Here's a shirt style guide to rev up your wardrobe this summer By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 16 May 2018 01:35:12 GMT "Go for vertical broad stripes instead of horizontal for a vacation wardrobe," suggests Lodha, like in this bowling shirt by AMI. A broad striped shirt, subdued with a solid-coloured jacket, can also work as a safe yet edgy work outfit. Luxury labels and high street brands have embraced resort collars to help you keep your cool. We like this Louis Vuitton floral shirt paired with the un-skippable baggy pants folded at the hem. It's been a while since pastels made their way into men's wardrobes, in dainty and rugged versions (with weathered fabrics). A pastel palette can be great for summer when choosing shades for colour blocking, and can also work in constraint with prints, like you see here in this Kenzo piece. Illustrations/Uday Mohite Baggy trousers have been a staple across brands, as has athleisure wear. Merge formal wear with a sporty element either through a simple stripe running on the side of your shirt or like this merger of a hoodie and a shirt by Hermes. Full Article
ui Post-COVID-19 world could be blessing in disguise for Indian sports, says Abhinav Bindra By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 22 Apr 2020 04:27:38 GMT Legendary shooter Abhinav Bindra believes once the coronavirus pandemic subsides, it could be a blessing in disguise for Indian sports due to absence of much foreign exposure. "The post-COVID-19 world could be a blessing in disguise for India. There may not be so much foreign exposure and this may allow India to build proper sporting infrastructure. We need to build our own coaches and our own support staff," Bindra said on Monday. The entire sporting calendar has come to a grinding halt across the world due to the coronavirus pandemic. Major sporting events, including Tokyo Olympics and Wimbledon, have either been postponed or cancelled. Bindra, India's only individual Olympic gold medallist, alongwith Nandan Kamath, lawyer and managing trustee GoSports Foundation, on Monday addressed the newly-appointed assistant directors and other senior officials of Sports Authority of India (SAI) during a special session. Bindra said that as sports administrators they need to work towards creating an alternate skill development programme for athletes to ensure their well-being in the long run. "We need to look after athletes because the very nature of sport is that more will fail than succeed. It is important that athletes have backup plans in case their sports career doesn't work out," he pointed out. Bindra further said that sports administrators need to understand the psychology of an athlete to be able to build them up because athletes pass through different phases because of the nature of sport and the probability of failure. "An expert can give a larger overview of the various elements that go into sporting performance and that's where you will understand where performance is built and what are the various elements that go into performance and then you will start to have a better and deeper understanding of where performance is built. Results at a competition cannot be the only denominator when planning for an Olympic Games or an Asian Games," he added. Bindra spoke at length on his experience as an athlete and also on the future of sports in India. "The one per cent (of athletes) makes all the difference in sport, and as our sports ecosystem starts maturing, we need to start focussing on that one percent for all athletes," he said. Stressing on the need to build a strong talent identification and nurturing programme, he added, "Getting foundations right is important, a lot of work on that has already been started with the Khelo India programme and also emphasis placed on junior programme of different sports. ui A genuine all-rounder, kho-kho player and coach Ramesh Waralikar passes away at 83 By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 9 May 2020 02:22:23 GMT Former national-level kho-kho player and coach Ramesh Waralikar, 83, who served the game in different capacities over five decades, passed away at a city hospital on Thursday. Prolonged illness Waralikar, who had been unwell for the last couple of years, went on to become one of the finest kho-kho statisticians, given his vast knowledge of all the players and records associated with it. Shrirang Inamdar, 65, the youngest kho-kho player to be honoured with the Arjuna Award at the age of 18, recalled his association with Waralikar during Maharashtra's victorious campaign in the national championship at Patiala in 1974. "I was leading Maharashtra for the first time and Waralikar sir was our team manager. His expertise and guidance helped us win that title. He was a genuine all-rounder. He served the game as a player, coach, selector, umpire, administrator, commentator and statistician. He was like Google. You could ask him anything and he would give you accurate details. Back then, without the internet, he manually kept every record of the game," Inamdar told mid-day from Pune. A game of kho-kho being played at Dantewada village in Chhattisgarh. Pic for representational purpose only India's women's kho-kho team captain Sarika Kale, who led the country to a gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati, said Waralikar would readily share his kho-kho knowledge with everyone. 'Most helpful person' "Though Waralikar sir was not associated with our team as a coach or manager or in any official capacity, whenever we would meet him, he would readily share tips with us. He had a unique style of explaining the nuances of the game. He analysed opposition teams well and always advised us on strategies," said Kale. Fellow statistician Arun Deshpande doffed his hat to Waralikar. "He is the originator of kho-kho statistics in India. It's a challenge to maintain statistics of a sport that is not well documented but seeing his passion, we were inspired to continue collecting and preserving data associated with the game," said Deshpande, who has been working on kho-kho statistics with Waralikar since 1970. ui Mumbai Food: Enjoy authentic Manipuri cuisine at this pop-up in Chembur By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 24 Aug 2017 03:05:55 GMT Baah Gajor Gahori Growing up in a conservative home in Imphal, Keisham Kunjakishor Singh, who goes by the names Keisham or Bung, wasn't allowed to cook chicken and pork in his kitchen. "My parents never stopped us from eating it but we couldn't cook meat inside our home. So, I would bring the stove to our courtyard, and smoke pork outside. I also remember learning how to smoke fish at the age of 10. That is considered vegetarian in most Manipuri homes," says the 35-year-old Manipuri fashion designer based in Mumbai, who moonlights as a home chef. This Sunday, he will offer a taste of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare from the northeastern state, at the pop-up titled Manipuri Chakhum, presented by Authenticook. Singju Take a veggie walkThe meal features 10 dishes, including Singju, a popular street snack served at female-run stalls known as potphams. It's a salad made using cabbage, lotus root and fenugreek leaves, laced with several herbs. For the mains, you can seek comfort in Mangal Ooti, a dal featuring whole yellow peas cooked with bamboo shoot, brought in from his native town. "I travel to Imphal every month and return with seasonal herbs, black rice, bhut jolokia and spices like bay leaves, Chinese chives and ginger. We grow most of them in our backyard," says Keisham. Chakhao Kheer He'll use the pungent chive leaves in Maroi Bori Thongba, a curry with black gram and lentil dumplings, while the other spices will be used in Kangsoi, a popular Manipuri version of a stew made with fresh, seasonal vegetables like tomatoes, cabbage and potatoes. "I grew up on this stew, and sticky rice. I'll use my mother's recipe to make it," he adds. The food will be served with sticky rice Also on the vegetarian menu is Chamfoot, a simple, steamed vegetable salad. Keisham has prepared accompaniments like Soibum Iromba (fermented bamboo shoot chutney) and Kanglayen Iromba (dry mushroom chutney). Know the differenceThe non-vegetarian menu stars Baah Gajor Gahori Tender, where chunks of pork are cooked with bamboo shoot and bhut jolokia chilli. "The Manipuri style of cooking pork is vastly different from Naga pork, which usually is just boiled or steamed. We use several spices to cook the meats. I make my own spice mix with coriander, cumin, fenugreek seeds, and asafoetida." KK Singh aka Keisham Similarly, Yen Thongba, or chicken curry, is prepared by shallow frying the meat first and then boiling it in water to thicken it as gravy. The pop-up also features Nga Ataoba Thongba, comprising Rohu fish that is fried and curried in tomato. Keisham will also offer sticky rice that has been wrapped and cooked in lotus leaf. "It's the most traditional way of cooking it. The leaf infuses an aroma into the rice. For dessert, there's Chakhao Kheer cooked with black rice. It's something my father would cook for us in the afternoons when we were kids," reminisces Keisham. ui Mumbai Food: Mahim takeaway delivers world cuisines in meal boxes By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 28 Aug 2017 03:10:14 GMT Barbecue Chicken Wings; Kheema Mutter Pav; Veggie Manchurian Style and Chilli Chicken RiceBarbecue Chicken Wings; Kheema Mutter Pav; Veggie Manchurian Style and Chilli Chicken Rice A meal in a box may sound convenient, but not terribly appetising. Those were the thoughts running through our minds as we decided to check out The Bowl Box, a recently opened takeaway in Mahim. And we're glad we were proved wrong! The Bowl Box dishes out an extensive menu with Asian, Indian, Italian and even Mediterranean meal boxes. In addition, they have options for 8-inch pizzas, rolls, appetisers, the kids' menu, stuffed pav, salad bowls, tandoori cuisine, and a separate one-bowl meal section too. The meals arrived in sturdy boxes We placed the order and were promised delivery in 45 minutes. But it took an hour. In their defence, we had ordered a total of seven items. Strangely, we couldn't try out dishes from the kids' menu, as we were informed that those dishes need a day's notice to be made. Asian Meal Box The food came packaged in sleek black containers with see-through lids. A label printed with The Bowl Box's name and logo also bore the name of the dish, and had tick boxes to help you instantly tell the difference between vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. We started with one of the quirkier offerings: the 8-inch Mumbai Pav Bhaji Pizza (Rs 225 not inclusive of taxes). Fusion can go terribly wrong ; an Indian street food stall and a ristorante didn't seem to go well together in our heads. But the pav bhaji came with a chatpata flavour, while the cheese spread out lavishly on top tickled the palate. Surprisingly, the spicy and cheesy flavours complemented each other perfectly. Next came an Asian meal box - Basil and Burnt Garlic Rice, with Thai Curry and Chicken Fry (Rs 300). The Thai curry didn't taste very Thai, reminding us a bit instead of the Chinese Schezwan sauce. The Chicken Fry was crunchy and flavoured with spices. The meal also came with a salad - strips of carrots and cucumber - and a generous chunk of brownie with a drizzle of chocolate sauce. The brownie was rich and moist, and the perfect way to end the meal (box). Then came the Italiano meal box - veggies in a creamy basil sauce, with garlic bread and tossed potatoes (Rs 300). On the menu, this meal, too, is advertised with a salad and dessert. But it came without either, or even the garlic bread. The dish itself was filling, though, thanks to the sinful white sauce and a generous portion of vegetables. The one-bowl meal of Chilli Chicken Rice (Rs 250) lived up to its name and had bite, making it perfect for a palate that craves spices. There was a generous amount of rice; we only wish that there had been a few more chicken pieces. From the stuffed pav section, we opted for Kheema Mutter (Rs 250), which made it to our list of favourites (along with the pizza). It came packaged with crunchy fryums on top. The pav was overflowing with kheema-mutter, which was mildly spiced and yet tangy, and the portion was big enough to make this a meal in itself. While we tried the appetisers at the time of delivery (so we'd know what they tasted like hot and fresh), saving them for later in the day, they tasted just as good when re-heated in their microwave-friendly containers. The tangy Barbecue Chicken Wings (Rs 225) was sweet and spicy thanks to the homemade barbecue sauce with honey. The Veggie Manchurian Style (Rs 200) had greens doused in spices, though it would have been better had they mentioned in the menu that this dish is dry. But in spite of the few lapses, overall, The Bowl Box offers delicious treats at reasonable rates. And we'll be sure to give it another shot. ui Sign up for a cacao-inspired dinner to rekindle your love for the fruit By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 05 Sep 2017 10:31:51 GMT Fabien Mason (centre) with Jane (left). Pics/Mason & Co, Danda Food Project Did you know that for most its 4,000-year history, chocolate was consumed as a bitter beverage rather than as dessert? To see the various other ways in which cacao can be consumed, sign up for a pop-up dinner organised by Danda Food Project, in collaboration with organic chocolate brand Mason & Co. Aditya Raghavan, cheese consultant and co-founder of Danda Food Project says, "The idea for this came about when Anandita [Kamani, co-founder] and I were discussing how astounding it is that we get beautiful dark chocolate from this plain-looking pod. We started doing some research, and that led us to Jane and Fabien Mason's Auroville set-up." The result is a 10-course meal that takes you on a journey of tasting everything from the cacao fruit to the decadent chocolate that comes out of it. Most of the menu is shrouded in secrecy, and will only be revealed to diners on the day. "We want people to be excited by it when they see it," explains Raghavan, adding that there will be options for vegetarians and vegans, too. Without revealing too much, he gives us a sneak peek into what we can expect. "The first course is a sorbet made with the pulp of the cacao fruit. We sourced close to 30kg of it from a farm in Kerala," says Raghavan, adding, "Very few people have actually tried the fruit. It tastes like a cross between a lychee and mangosteen." Another dish will make use of cocoa nibs, while a third will feature rich cacao butter. "For the sixth course, we have used 10-day aged molé [a savoury, chocolate-based sauce from Mexico] to create a dish," he shares. Six of the 10 courses are savoury items, after which the desserts will start coming in. There will be nine drink pairings through the meal. Six of these will feature wine, while Abhishek Chinchalkar of Bombay Duck Brewing (and third co-founder of Danda Food Project) will be serving a Chocolate Stout. "The tenth course is a digestif, featuring two items, Coffee as Chocolate, and Chocolate as Coffee. For this, we've played around with coffee beans and cold-brewed coffee to give you what looks like chocolate but tastes like coffee," says Raghavan. Those who miss this pop-up need not worry, as Raghavan and Kamani will host a repeat meal at their Khar home on September 12. ui Craft beers and world cuisine calls for revisit at Andheri's newest brewery By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 15 Sep 2017 03:32:25 GMT Bavarian Bouquet and Tropical Froth A trend we have seen in menus across the city is the use of the term, progressive global cuisine. This covers everything under the sun and allows chefs to serve dosas or dimsums. Many falter in delivering the best of each cuisine, while others manage to gain footfall. Andheri's newest brewery (in place of The Pump Room, which was a brewery too), Barrel & Co has a menu that falls in this category. The interiors are industrial with a surprise mix of S&M, in the form of a large cage and mannequins decked in chains. Beer-infused Chicken Supreme with Dukkah Spice Butter Chicken and Jeera Rice (as part of lunch thalis) and Spaghetti Lamb Bolognese fight for attention. We hope for the best and order their craft beers first. We have a weakness for wheat beers and the Belgian Wit ('190 for 330 ml) has the perfect grainy flavour with a hint of citrus. The Hopfenwiezen and Irish Red Ale (both '190) need a little more finesse for a smooth transition of the many flavours they pack. The most unique offering is the Bavarian Bouquet ('210), a floral, sweet beer that we guess will polarise opinions. It's unlike anything other breweries serve and the aroma reminds us of an exotic spa — we don't mind it one bit and call for another mug. One thing that all the beers lack is a good head. To further experiment with the Belgian Wit, we pick Tropical Froth ('300), a cocktail that makes the most of the citrusy nature of the craft beer when mixed with orange, apple and pineapple. Zucchini Stuffed with Cottage Cheese and Cream Melange; (bottom)âÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂThe industrial interiors. Pics/ Dhara Vora Sabhnani Happy with the beers, we try a Mini Dosa Taco with Chicken Sukka ('290), Beer-infused Chicken Supreme with Dukkah Spice ('275) and Zucchini Stuffed with Cottage Cheese and Cream Melange ('275). We are not disappointed. The chicken skewers are tender and the coating of dukkah adds a woody taste to the meat. The stuffed zucchini, comes on a bed of chutney-like paste and the rolls are stuffed with delicate paneer. The chicken stuffing of the dosa tacos starts with a sweet taste and then hits spicy notes, balancing the flavours. The dosa is a tad soggy. Like us, other tables seem to be having a good time, too. Several tables are filled on the Monday evening when we visit. With good food, aptly priced craft beers (just two options for bottled beers is a downer) and a well-designed entrance to property that will soon become an Insta favourite, Barrel & Co calls for a revisit. ui Indian derby build-up: Laced with optimism By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 01 Feb 2018 04:00:39 GMT Suraj Narredu astride Lady in Lace Growing up in a racing family and watching my father (Satish) and uncle (Malesh) riding as top jockeys, shaped my destiny, and I started riding at a young age. Though record books will tell you that I climbed the ladders of success rather swiftly, no jockey can experience a real sense of fulfillment unless he wins the greatest race of them all — the Indian Derby at Mahalaxmi. And because both, my father and uncle, had won the great race as jockeys, it was almost a question of continuing the family tradition. So it was a dream realised when I won the 2015 Indian Derby with Be Safe (trained by Malesh), who matched the record of my father, having won the big race both as jockey and trainer. Be Safe thus marked a new chapter in my career. Now I get another opportunity to have my moment in the sun. This Sunday, I will ride another, very capable Derby aspirant in Lady In Lace, trained by Prasad Raju of Hyderabad. Here's why I consider her so special. I was on the bench with an injury when Raju sent her into the care of my trainer-brother Rajesh Narredu in Bangalore. From the sidelines, I watched her winning two races — one with an apprentice rider (M Ayyer), and the other, with jockey YS Srinath, who also went on to win two more races, including the Fillies' Championship, when she went back to Hyderabad. The trainer optimistically pitched her in the Hyderabad Derby, and in blinding rain, Prevalent Force (ridden by jockey Srinath who had switched allegiance) had to go to the bottom of the well to contain Lady In Lace. It was a big let down for Raju. Though I had not ridden the filly yet, I felt she was high-class material. The Pune Derby was round the corner. I used my persuasive skills to convince Raju that Lady In Lace should take her chances. She was supplemented at a prohibitive cost with a late entry fee. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Lady In Lace put up a jaw-dropping show. It was Raju's first Derby winner, and I was thrilled to be part of his team. Later, Lady In Lace did not even break a sweat when winning the Golconda 1000 Guineas. Shapoor Mistry, a keen judge of horseflesh, opted to buy a 50% share in the filly — that's vindication of the class I always knew she had. She further confirmed my opinion about her when storming past her adversaries late in the lane in the Indian 1000 Guineas. An infection disrupted her training schedule, and she skipped the Indian Oaks. However, she was impressive in a recent mock race. I galloped her on Monday over a mile, and she could not have done better. I strongly believe Lady In Lace is peaking at the right time. Full Article
ui Sonali Bendre: Putting out my bald picture was quite liberating By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 28 Apr 2020 03:02:00 GMT Sonali Bendre is one of the Cancer survivors in Bollywood, akin to Manisha Koirala and Lisa Ray. These women have some very inspiring journeys and are likely to become role models in the future. And now, speaking about her journey to SpotboyE, Bendre spilled the beans on almost everything, right from her treatment to her husband Goldie Behl's unshakable support to how she feels today. It could leave you teary-eyed. The first question was about her current health and she said, "I'm doing well right now. I'm feeling good. Also, I would say it hasn't been much of a shift for me because the last 2 years have been sort of a quarantine for me anyway. So it's not too much of a change at this point, but I would have a lot of visitors coming and going then. That's the part that I miss the most." She also said how she has been missing her parents due to the lockdown and can't meet them. "Above all, I'm missing my parents right now in this because I can't really meet them. But other than that, we have lots to be thankful for. I always count my blessings," stated Bendre. When she posted her bald picture on Instagram, it was welcomed by one and all, and the actress earned the respect from everyone for the same. She even spoke about her decision to do it and how it made her feel. She said, "Frankly, how long are you going to hide? Just get on with life, man. I felt I was getting distracted trying to hide my falling hair, so just putting it out there fully bald was more to help myself than anything else. It was quite liberating, actually." And do you know Goldie Behl didn't want the actress to grow her hair back? This reveal was also made by Bendre. She stated, "He used to say I need to own it and that I look fabulous without my hair as well. Today, he tells me that 'you should not grow your hair back, the short hair suits you very much'. My husband has been an amazing support." As we stated above, Bendre has been an inspiring figure and we all need to respect her for the way she has handled her life and been such a sport and a spirited lady! ui Lara Dutta on Hotstar's Hundred: The character's persona was intriguing By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 3 May 2020 01:32:50 GMT Last seen in Welcome to New York (2018), Lara Dutta Bhupathi is back on the scene with the web series, Hundred, which marks her digital debut. "It just fell into place. I wasn't actively looking for anything. I thought it would be interesting to be part of the web culture." The offer landed in her lap rather suddenly. "Though I have known Ruchi [director Narain] for years, we never spoke about working together. I always wanted to be directed by a woman. I like her work, so, I thought I'd give it a shot when she made the offer." At odds with the roles she has played in Bollywood till date, her character in Hundred was age-appropriate. Dutta's Soumya Shukla is a cop, a part she has never played before. "The experience was educational. I needed to get the body language and nuances on point. I even met a couple of women DCPs to get a better insight." Digging deep into her character, Dutta says she hasn't explored a role that is as layered as this one. "[She is] ambitious, unapologetic and frustrated, and also faces issues in her marital life. There were so many aspects to her persona that intrigued me." What also drew her to the show was co-star Rinku Rajguru, best remembered for Sairaat (2016). "We are generations apart. I thought we would make for an interesting combo. We come from different worlds." Shooting for the Hotstar web series in different locations of Mumbai was an eye-opener. "Despite living in Mumbai for 25 years, I didn't realise how much more there is to the city. I got to see the gritty underbelly as we shot in real locations." Despite hubby, tennis champ Mahesh Bhupathi, being her sounding board, she refers to daughter Saira as her biggest critic. "She is excited to see me on screen, but also keeps critiquing." ui Pakistani host jokes about Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan's demise, actor Adnan Siddiqui apologises By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 3 May 2020 08:19:50 GMT For the uninitiated, the demise of Rishi Kapoor and Irrfan Khan has left a void that will never be filled. The legends have only left millions of memories for all of us through their films and performances, both of which will always stay unforgettable. Their collective contribution to Indian Cinema was over a 100 years, yes! However, a Pakistani host by the name of Amir Liaquat recently made fun of their deaths and that has forced another Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui to take to his social media account to apologise. Taking to Instagram, he wrote- "So I don't know how to explain what I'm feeling right now or what to say. But this needs to go out. I was invited on the live chat show 'Jeewey Pakistan' yesterday when this unfortunate incident happened." (sic) He added, "The anchor Amir Liaquat Sahab joked about something extremely sensitive. Not only were they both close to me but also as a human it was wrong on so many levels. I cannot even call it 'hitting below the belt'." (sic) Have a look at the post right here: View this post on Instagram ð. A post shared by Adnan Siddiqui (@adnansid1) onMay 1, 2020 at 3:30pm PDT In case you were unaware, Siddiqui played the role of Sridevi's husband in Mom and also shared the screen with Irrfan Khan in 2007's International film, A Mighty Heart. He even shared a picture from one of the stills from that film to mourn the actor's sudden demise and wrote a long note. Have a look right here: View this post on Instagram “Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un”..... "Verily we belong to God, and verily to Him do we return."! . . . Disturbed and gutted!! A fine soul gone too soon. I had the honour of first meeting Irrfan as a co-star on the sets of ‘A Mighty Heart.’ For one of the scenes after learning his lines I saw him doing the scene again and again which left me puzzled. I asked him, Irrfan Sahab ye kya kar rahe hain aap? He replied- We’re both playing CID agents which means we’ll be showing our ID cards everywhere. I’m practicising the scene so I don’t look clumsy while showing the ID card. And that was the first time I realised what a fine actor he was. We’d become friends on the sets and used to hang out together after the shoot. I remember for another scene, he wanted to know a word in Urdu used commonly in Pakistan and he asked me. He was a great actor but didn’t shy away from learning and perfecting his art. One of the evenings, he shared an incident where him and his friend got the role of an extra actor in James Bond series “Octopussy” which was shot in India. But because they cycled to the set, they were late and the shoot was over. He told me since then he wanted to do a Hollywood movie. Our careers in Hollywood started together, but he proved his mettle and conquered the fort. In 2018 while attending IPPA in London. I found out that he was in London, though he wasn’t meeting anyone he agreed to meet me. We had a long chat about movies and world in general. He looked so positive. His last words were- “Adnan, I’ll be fine very soon and I’ll be back. InshAllah”! Who knew today, I would be penning this note. Condolences and strength to his family. Irrfan, you will be missed a lot. Rest in peace my friend.ð A post shared by Adnan Siddiqui (@adnansid1) onApr 29, 2020 at 3:02am PDT And this is what he had to say about Kapoor's unfortunate death: View this post on Instagram Another huge blow!. ui Tisca Chopra: Irrfan Khan stopped me from quitting By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 6 May 2020 05:46:25 GMT Actress Tisca Chopra worked with the late Irrfan Khan in the critically acclaimed film "Qissa" besides in TV projects. She says Irrfan pushed her in the right direction during her initial days of struggle. "As I was struggling in the nineties and feeling disheartened, I would say that I wanted to quit acting because there was nothing that I could get from here, especially substantial work that I was looking forward to. I remember Tishu (Tigmanshu Dhulia) and Irrfan were there, and Irrfan promptly said, 'dekh lo, kaise har maan rahi hai, acting chhod dena hai? Theek hai, chhod de, lekin yaad rakh, apne tarike se aage badhne ke liye, himmat chahiye hoti hai… guts chahiye, guts!'" Tisca recalled, speaking to IANS. According to the actress, Irrfan gave DVDs of films like "Bullets Over Broadway" and "Once Upon A Time In America" and it was like a task for her to watch and understand these films. Subsequently, Irrfan produced a segment of the TV show, "Star Bestsellers", titled "Hum Saath Saath Hain Kya?" that was written by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and directed by Dhulia. He cast Tisca in the segment. "He gave me the right kind of challenges for an actor to stay at my battle. Along with him, Tigmanshu and few more people gave me the scope to overall challenge the scene of entertainment. He was surely instrumental in my career," shared Tisca. Irrfan passed away on April 29 in Mumbai, at the age of 53, due to colon infection. While the sudden demise of the actor left the film industry shocked and sadden, Tisca said: "Now that few days have gone by, emotionally I am in a better stage. I am talking and thinking why so many people reacted to Irrfan's demise as a personal loss. I think, even if you do not know him personally, through his acting, he showed us expressions that we usually reserve for our family, friends and intimate people." She added: "As an actor he had the courage to show us that vulnerability. So even as an audience when you watch his film, through his performance you experience the story along with those characters. You, as an audience did not look at Irrfan, you looked with him at the world of that story. That is why it is intimate. That is why Irrfan belonged to his audience. That is why his demise is very personal to the audience. Of course, we are his close people! It is devastating for us." Catch up on all the latest entertainment news and gossip here. ui Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Ghoomketu to release digitally on Eid weekend; Ranveer Singh and Amitabh Bachchan to be seen in special appearances By Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 08:27:21 GMT ZEE5 announced its next film Ghoomketu which is set to release on 22nd May. An aspiring writer’s 101 retreats into the life of the protagonist, Ghoomketu is played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The movie is a comedy-drama from the viewpoint of an inexperienced writer struggling to make it big in the film industry in Mumbai. On his quest to come up with a great story, he is inspired by day to day mundane life activities. Will his ambition and determination exceed his talents? Or will a corrupt cop, who is on a mission to find Ghoomketu, put a brake on his 30-day escapade? Directed by Pushpendra Nath Misra and produced by Phantom Films and Sony Pictures Networks (SPN), this film will be exclusively releasing on ZEE5. The quirk and humour in the movie are exaggerated with dramatic linguistic annotations. The film is set in a wickedly playful backdrop and will be great for the entire family to watch together. The film also has ace director Anurag Kashyap as a cop and the talented Ila Arun as Ghoomketu’s Aunt, in lead roles along with Raghubir Yadav, Swanand Kirkire, Ragini Khanna and others. The film will also see special cameos from Amitabh Bachchan, Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha, Chitrangada Singh, Lauren Gottlieb and filmmaker Nikhil Advani. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui shares, “Ghoomketu is a quirky, never-seen-before character and I thoroughly enjoyed playing him. Anurag, who is generally behind the camera, will be seen sharing screen space with us and it was a great experience to work with him as an actor. ‘Ghoomketu’ has a phenomenal storyline which will definitely entertain the audience. During this time of the lockdown, I am glad that a humorous film that the entire family can watch is being streamed on ZEE5.” Actor Anurag Kashyap shares, “Every film is a labour of love and I saw the conviction in the director of Ghoomketu and hence decided to do something which is my least favourite thing to do, which is act. The film is funny and heartwarming.” Film Director Pushpendra Nath Misra adds, “Wherever we go, we are never far away from our roots. Ghoomketu, as the name suggests, is a story of the ‘journey to the beginning’. This a film where the protagonist - a writer- draws inspiration from the idiosyncrasies of his own family members. This was a dream project with a stellar cast (sublime actors, all of them), and the freedom to tell the story in a non-stereotypical way. For all the writers, their observation begins at home. This film is a celebration of our family members - our ‘Bua’s and ‘Chacha’s and ‘Dadda’s - who we (Ghoomketu) always carry in our hearts, wherever we go. I am glad it will reach the huge family audiences of ZEE5.” Vivek Agrawal, Producer, Phantom Films says, Ghoomketu is one of those rare gems that will put a smile on your face while taking you through the struggle of a man who is out there trying his luck in Bollywood films. Bringing this story to life has been a roller-coaster ride, just like the protagonist’s journey in the film! It has been a pleasure working on ‘Ghoomketu’– a project that is relatable for many people, on so many levels and we are thrilled to have ZEE5 on board to release it.” This quirky comedy is all set to confuse, entertain and make you laugh this Eid weekend. The girl left behind a four-page suicide note. Her body was found hanging in her room on April 16 when the incident took place in Shanti Nagar, Devri Road of Sadar police limits in Agra but the matter came to light only after a video made by the girl went viral on the social media. The video, apparently made prior to the incident, shows the girl saying that she wanted to become a police officer and provide justice to her mother and elder brother and younger sister. In the video clip, the girl, a student of Class 10, claimed that her uncle gave her a country made pistol and asked her to shoot her 38-year-old mother and two siblings, but instead, she had decided to take her own life. She alleged that her father, two uncles and a cousin assaulted and mentally harassed her mother, two siblings and herself. In her suicide note, the girl wrote, "I wanted to live, to see myself become a police officer and to provide justice to my mother and siblings. But I am ending my life, as I am tired now. We, all four, are mentally tortured and harassed on a daily basis by my father, two uncles and cousin over property." The police have arrested her father on charges of abetment to suicide, while the rest of the accused are on the run. The autopsy report stated 'asphyxia due to hanging' as the cause of the death. The girl in her suicide note also stated that, "prior to marrying my mother, my father had murdered his first wife and her four children, including a foetus. My uncle, too, has served jail term. They molested me and did wrong things. They all must be given stringent punishment after my death." According to the FIR lodged by the girl's mother, on the morning of April 16, the family was assaulted by the four men. Later, in the afternoon, the girl was found dead. "The four men murdered my daughter, while I was out for work," alleged the mother. Sadar SHO Kamlesh Kumar Singh said, "After the autopsy, a case of IPC section 302 (murder) was changed to 306 (abetment to suicide). We have arrested the father, but the others are still on the run." "We are investigating all the allegations made by the girl prior to her suicide. We will add more sections as the case progresses," he said. ui When Dwayne Johnson lost the role of Jack Reacher to Tom Cruise By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 13 Apr 2020 12:09:08 GMT Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson says he had auditioned for the part of the popular character Jack Reacher, which he lost out to actor Tom Cruise. He made the revelation during a Q&A session on Instagram. Through a seven-minute video, Johnson said he really wanted the role in the 2012 action movie, adding that losing it opened another door for him, reports dailymail.co.uk. "Business is business and I'm happy (Cruise) got it," he said. The action star said he was confident about getting the part as he believed his physical attributes were perfect for the character, which has been created by author Lee Child. "In Hollywood, actors are kind of like in-a-box. There are actors that can vie for a particular role because it allows for them to have a certain look, skin colour, size, etc. Fortunately, for me, there aren't a lot of guys at all who look like me. So, all of my roles, from the beginning of my career, I've been a lucky son of a b***h that they've been created and designed for me -- except Jack Reacher," he said. At that time, Johnson said that Cruise was "biggest movie star in the world". "I got the call saying 'Hey, you didn't get the role'. Look, I didn't even know if I had a shot for it, but the people around me at that time made me think that I did. I felt like I did, I felt like 'Why not me?'" he said. "I'm positive that the role of Jack Reacher, because it was an established character, an IP that was well known and beloved around the world, that I wouldn't have had the creative space to do what I wanted with the character. I look back in gratitude that I didn't get Jack Reacher," he added. Later, Johnson got a chance to essay the role of Luke Hobbs in the fifth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise. "The universe works in funny ways though, as when that door shut on me, another door opened with the opportunity to create a character from scratch that was of my DNA," he said. Today, Johnson is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, and has iconic films, including The Mummy Returns, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Hercules, Snitch, Moana, revamped Jumanji franchise and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, under his belt. ui Pune: Sugar mill takes lead in making ethanol from cane juice By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 14 Feb 2019 10:47:52 GMT A cooperative sugar mill in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra has taken the lead in producing fuel-grade ethanol directly from sugarcane juice in the state, a senior official said on Thursday. The Centre had in July last year allowed sugar mills to manufacture ethanol directly from sugarcane juice or an intermediate product called B-molasses. The decision was taken to help mills divert cane juice for ethanol manufacturing during surplus years. Maharashtra sugar commissionerate's joint director Sanjay Bhosale told PTI that Kolhapur's Tatyasaheb Kore Warana Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd is the only cooperative sugar mill in the state which has started making ethanol from sugarcane juice. Traditionally, in India ethanol is made from 'C-Heavy' molasses, but in July last year, the government gave permission to make ethanol from sugarcane juice and 'B-Heavy' molasses or B-grade molasses, he said. "A miller can do a minimum modification in the equipment to make ethanol from B-Heavy molasses. But in case of ethanol from sugarcane juice, the mill would have to go for changes in the machinery. That is why no sugar mill was ready to go into that direction, but Warana has shown the courage," Bhosale said. The fuel grade ethanol that is produced directly from cane juice is fetching Rs 59 per litre. This is going to be beneficial for the sugar industry that is facing crisis of excess stock of sugar, Warana co-operative group chairman and former minister Vinay Kore said. The Kolhapur-based sugar mill is producing 70,000 litres of ethanol per day, another factory official said. The government allowed fuel-grade ethanol production from sugarcane juice with an aim to increase the earnings of sugar mills and help them in making full and timely payments to farmers. Cane-based ethanol can be produced in three different ways directly from cane juice, from B-grade and C-grade molasses. Molasses is a viscous product obtained from raw sugar during the refining process. Maharashtra is one of the leading sugarcane producing states. Sugar mills in the country were incurring losses as prices fell below the production cost on account of record output as against the annual domestic demand. Full Article
