Sona Mohapatra's documentary, Shut Up Sona, to be screened at the 2020 Hot Docs Festival in Toronto

In the light of the COVID 19 Pandemic, the 2020 Hot Docs Festival in Toronto, which is the world's largest documentary film festival was in jeopardy but the Film Festival, has decided to uphold & celebrate the spirit of movie making & film-makers, by showcasing a multi-platform 'festival-at-home' experience to its audience that kick-starts on May 28.

The only Indian film premiering at this prestigious international festival is Sona Mohapatra's documentary, Shut Up Sona. Directed by Deepti Gupta, the feature length film resonates with every woman's search for equal space in a culture ridden with millennia of misogyny. This is a film about music, art, social change, and a clashing of the ancient and the modern & this political story is told via the journey of Sona Mohapatra & her relentless fight for a voice. Her unapologetic personality has been rendered beautifully in the 85-minute film that takes the audience through the alleys of Vrindavan to the doorstep of a Dargah, rooting it in the diverse culture of the country, & questioning the patriarchy even prevalent in the Uber cool alleyways of Bollywood.

The film that premiered at MAMI in 2019 & won a critics guild award there, has gone on to make a big impact at the Rotterdam Festival, Goteborg Festival, even winning a special mention at Impact Docs Award. Speaking about it, Sona says, "With the world locked down & in anxious times, music, storytelling, cinema & art play an even more important role in helping us get back on our feet as a society."

She adds, "I am grateful that SHUT UP SONA will find an entirely new audience in another part of the world through the Hot Docs Festival. I couldn't have imagined that our film would be selected in these top festivals of the world when we were making it. That it is a universal story that is finding resonance across the globe validates my journey as an artist who has never felt restricted to being just a singer. I carry my country, it's art, it's present & its history within me. In telling my story, I hope to connect the disparate dots within my culture to build a narrative that portrays a more nuanced view of the hopes & aspirations of India."

Salman Khan's caravan Being Haangryy goes to every gully and distribute essentials to the needy

Even as he stays put at his Panvel farmhouse, Salman Khan is doing his bit to help the daily-wage workers and vertically challenged artistes in the industry. Now, the actor has kickstarted a food donation drive in Mumbai where two food trucks labelled Being Haangryy make the rounds of the western suburbs and distribute essentials among the underprivileged.

A source reveals, "The food trucks were an initiative of Salman's not-for-profit organisation Being Human and initially kept on the set of Radhe to provide free meals to the crew. Since the suspension of shoots in mid-March, the trucks have been lying unused. When it struck Salman that they can be used for a greater cause, he promptly contacted Yuva Sena leader Rahul N Kanal to implement the idea."

Over the past two weeks, they have extended help across slums in Andheri, Bandra and Santacruz. The source adds, "They try to reach 1,000 families every day. Every kit contains three kilos each of rice and wheat flour, two kilos of dal, one litre oil, spices and salt. All safety norms are followed while distributing the rations."

A volunteer distributes food kits to the underprivileged

Kanal, who is coordinating the endeavour, says, "Salman bhai is sponsoring the drive. We are doing our bit by deputing volunteers so that we can reach out to as many families as possible."

Veteran Gujarati actor Arvind Trivedi, who became a household name all over India playing Raavan in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan, got emotional while watching the re-run of the popular mythological serial.

In a video circulating on social media, Trivedi, who is in his eighties now, is seen watching the 'Sita Apaharan' (Kidnapping of Sita) episode with great attention. The video has gone viral on the internet.

In the video, Trivedi folds his hands in the end. The scene got him very emotional, as per a report by timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Have a look:

Amid the ongoing 21-day nationwide lockdown, the popular mythological series is being re-telecast on Doordarshan.

Ramayan aired in 1987-1988 and is created, written, and directed by Ramanand Sagar. The show was a television adaptation of the Indian Hindu epic of the same name.

Soni Razdan remembers her show Buniyaad, and how it's more relevant today!

Buniyaad is a gem of a serial that only continues to give. It was a show that tackled the horrors of the 1947 Indo-Pak partition and the aftermath that followed. How the love between the Hindus and Muslims turned into violence and hatred. Soni Razdan was one of the principal characters of the show and charmed everyone with her performance. She has recently recalled her show as it has come back on television and that too at the right time when there is a major dearth of content on the small screen.

For all those who haven't seen it, you all should discover this gem. Taking to her Instagram account, she shared a classic throwback picture where we got a glimpse of her character and she hurled herself into the realms of memories.

Have a look right here:

And speaking to Mumbai Mirror, she spoke about her fond memories of the show and how it's even more relevant in today's times. She said, "It's a huge feeling of nostalgia. Buniyaad is such a well-written story and was ahead of its time. At some point, it was like a film also. Ramesh Sippy, who was shooting it, made it very much cinematic. I have watched a couple of episodes. I am enjoying it."

She added, "It means even more in the light of communal sentiment that is thrown around today. In Buniyaad, you can see how much hate Hindu families living in Lahore faced, during the partition. How they felt they never needed to move anywhere, which is India today. It breaks my heart. The script of Buniyaad was very well researched about the people and their real-life accounts. I feel very sad when I see what politics has done to both these countries (India and Pakistan). People were living happily with each other and would have lived together even today if partition had not happened. It is so sad that politics has changed our landscape forever."

On a lighter note, she also recalled the time when she was pregnant and how the whole unit took care of her. "When I started shooting Buniyaad, I was not married. There was a whole part of Buniyaad that goes into a flashback. It was then that I got married (to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt). I got pregnant towards the end of the show. They had turned my room into something special. I was not well at the beginning of my pregnancy. They would call me only when I was needed. They would ask me to go and lie down in my room. The production house also sent a car to pick me up every day. Earlier, I used to come by taxi as we didn't have a car then. They looked after me very well."

She went on, "One day, I was craving for idli sambar. I was craving to the point that I couldn't focus on anything else but idli. I happened to mention it and Mazhar Khan (Roshanlal, who played Razdan's brother-in-law) was around. He was so sweet and sent his driver to get idlis for me from somewhere down the road. I can never forget that I ate eight idlis that day. In my life, I had never eaten more than 2-3 idlis. Shaheen, my daughter, loves idlis. Maybe, that's why."

Soni Razdan hasn't lost her touch as an actor one bit. In recent times, she has been seen in films like Raazi and War and in both films, she added the emotional touch of a mother to a thrilling story.

Ishita Dutta: Never thought Vatsal Seth and I would get married

It was November 28, 2017, when Vatsal Seth and Ishita Dutta tied the knot and surprised all their fans. Not much was known about their romance and they didn't even indulge in any sort of social media PDA to at least leave us guessing a possible union in the future. But this is what Tinsel Town is all about, replete with shocks and surprises.

But do you know there was a time when Dutta felt she would never get married to Seth? She even has an explanation for that. In an interview with Bollywood Life, she spilled the beans on what made her say so and how the married life has been like. She said, "When I first saw Vatsal, I remember we were doing a mock shoot, however, he was already doing the show. And I saw him standing in the front, he appeared to be very serious, not too talkative. Generally, on-screen images are quite different, they are kinda full of life. So, I was really surprised to see quiet Vatsal in a serious zone."

She added, "According to my friends and co-stars on the sets, whenever Vatsal comes to meet me, I generally have a big glow on my face. That's what people say." When asked about the craziest thing she has ever done, her answer was, "Saying yes to him for marriage is the craziest thing I've done. I thought we would never get married." They both were seen together in the show, Rishton Ka Saudagar- Baazigar.

Vatsal made his Bollywood debut in 2004 with Taarzan: The Wonder Car and went on to do films like Heroes, Paying Guests, and Malang. Ishita was seen with Ajay Devgn in Drishyam in 2015 and with Kapil Sharma in 2017 in Firangi.

Offbeat ways to woo your lover this Valentine's Day

In June 2015, when two friends, Chetan Agarwal and Rohit Pansari decided to move from Delhi to Gurgaon, they struggled to cope with the odd jobs that were a part of the shifting process. "We had run out of leave from our day jobs, and the list of things to do was endless. Chores like arranging for an extra pair of keys or even getting paperwork and notaries done for the lease agreement took a toll. It's when we decided to start the Done Thing," informs 28-year-old Agarwal, who co-founded the company along with his friends Karan Saharan, Sonal Saraogi, Shivani Agarwal and Pansari. Based in Gurgaon, Done Thing is a cross-segment on-demand concierge solution.

Woo your valentine
On Valentine's Day, the apppromises to offer a personal assistant who will coordinate everything for you — from planning a surprise to executing it. "The ideas could include planning offbeat dinner dates or sending gifts to your partner in another city. Last year, someone wanted us to organise a red limousine, and after speaking to nearly 50 vendors, we managed to source one. We have also managed to find painted blue roses that are usually not available in India but were requested for by a client. We sourced them from a guy in Chandigarh," shares Agarwal. The Valentine's Day services range from arranging a helicopter to sending gifts with a personalised message for each day of the week, arranging a horse-pulled wagon to a dinner in a romantic setting.

You can even choose to send a photo-cake. If you decide to DIY, you could surprise your partner with breakfast in bed or a homemade dinner, and the team will help you get the ingredients and execute every element of surprise, without you having to step out.

Get personal
When not planning for occasions, the company acts like a personal shopping partner that undertakes day-to-day tasks such as shopping, cheque deposits, bill payments, courier, booking film tickets, car repairs as well as aids you in hunting for services such as electricians and doctors, in the neighbourhood. It picks and delivers parcels to different locations.

"Earlier, you would need to log on to multiple portals for different services. We wanted to bring all of it under one roof. At the moment, in Mumbai, you can opt for our help service to get information on technicians and restaurants in your area. In Delhi, we offer a pick up and drop service even if you've left an important document or phone at home," says Agarwal, adding that post the announcement for demonetisation, the company also offered an assistant, who would stand in the ATM queue for you, in the capital.

If you choose to hire a wedding assistant through the app or portal, he/she will take care of delivery of invites or gifts, getting clothes ironed, shoes polished, picking up of bridal outfits from the tailor, trousseau packing and gift wrapping. You will end up shelling up anything between Rs 100 for an hour, Rs 350 for 4 hours, Rs 650 for 8 hours and Rs 1000 for 12 hours for the services.

Currently, the portal has a tie-up with over 5,000 vendors. By the year-end, the company has plans to offer its services across Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Chandigarh.

Relationships: 6 best ways to reach sexual nirvana

All images for Representational purposes

The thought of regular sex varies from person to person. While for some regular sex is a fun and 'must-have' act, for others it is like a deal beyond imagination. Finally, there is another set of people, who do not consider regular sex as a mandate to a happy relationship. The cosy moments, the mild touches, the gentle bites, the smooch, the eye contact, the silence, the cuddles, and finally the sexual climax make a relationship healthy and strong. Some may be content with their sex life, while others may experience dissatisfaction. Those who are still looking for the ideal ways to reach sexual nirvana and have a successful climax, these six steps may be of great help to them. Take a look:

1. Take a shower together: Sex can happen anywhere in the house and a bed need not be the supporting agent every time. If possible, lock yourselves up in the bathroom and stand below the shower. Come out of the comfort zone and the cliched dark bedroom scenario. For a change, let the shower cubicle do the wonders. Try to grab each other tightly while you get drenched. Go ahead with those touches and kisses that you would have otherwise done in the bedroom. In case you get a chance to bath together in a bathtub, grab it right away.

2. Engage in dirty talks: Initially you might hesitate to open up to your partners, but with time opening up to the opposite sex can bring a u-turn to your sexual life. It’s not only those silent acts and foreplay that can help attain sexual nirvana, but also dirty talks and naughty touches can lead to sexual proximity. Be it the man or woman; none should hesitate to utter some flirty speeches to attain sexual satisfaction.

3. Keep the sensual touches alive: No one can deny the fact that sensual touches can gradually lead to a heavenly climax. Arouse your partner with a body massage. Women respond well to sensual touches and therefore attain greater orgasm. They can even touch their man from top to bottom to arouse him and gradually move towards a successful end together.

Trying a new position for the first time may be a bit difficult, but gradually the experiments can definitely work out. Pay heed to your intuitions and crave for something new every day.

5. Wear appealing nightwear: Men love to see their women in revealing and appealing clothes. Thin-strapped night wears, lacy lingerie, satin gowns or short hot pants can raise the room temperature and arouse the man at the same time. Women can even go for the man’s favourite colour lingerie.

6. Smell good and let the room smell good too: Use floral. fruity or chocolate scented body mists to raise the mood of the man and vice-versa. Try to apply body lotions and face creams that have pleasant fruity aromas. Along with that, the room should also smell good and fresh. Use lavender or rose scented room fresheners to create a romantic environment and set the mood for sex. Women can also opt for a good vaginal wash to maintain hygiene and freshness.

Not to mention here that gifting flowers, teddies, heart shaped cushions and chocolates have become passe. If you are a 'tall young handsome' gentleman caught in a Valentine's -Day gift dilemma, then here is a list of some exclusive gifts that you plan buy for your lady love on this Valentine’s Day.

1. Take her for a shopping date: Girls are big time shopaholics and probably there is no day in a year when she will deny to go for shopping. You may hate walking from one end of teh shopping mall to another with her, but Valentine’s Day is a special eve after all.  Enlighten her love for shopping on Valentine’s Day. Gift her a gorgeous dress, a swanky handbag, a fruity scented perfume or a silver jewellery. If your lady love is brand conscious, then gift her a shopping voucher from her favourite brand or store. She would love to shop with that special gift.

2. Gift her a romantic spa session: Gift a romantic spa session: Girls at time are finicky about their crockery and kitchenware. However, Valentine’s Day is all about love so gifts like frying pans and hand blenders can be kept aside for some other occasions. Why not show some care and affection and gift her something romantic that she can least expect? A spa session voucher can do wonder to your gifting idea. Make her feel relaxed, rejuvenated, and pampered at a good spa outlet on this Valentine’s Day. The session can turn more romantic if you also join your lady love. Couple Spa brings lots of spark to a relationship!

3. Make her happy with an opera ticket: To go for an opera show, you do not need to take permission for leaves from their bosses.  So, if you are planning for a short trip to your favourite destination but are tied between office and work, then head for a romantic evening at an opera house. Enjoy the moments of togetherness and make the evening more special. She will surely enjoy watching the show with you

4. Do not give gifts that make her feel uncomfortable: You may be longing to see your beloved in a cocktail dress with a plunging neckline on V-Day. While she may accept the gift, do not expect her to wear it and go out with you on the same day. Unless she is comfortable to dress up for you, do not force her or make her feel awful for not wearing your 'special gift' on this romantic occasion. She might surprise you with the beautiful dress on some other occasions.

5. Bake a cake or her favourite dish: Almost every girl loves chocolates and are foodies by heart. However, instead of buying her chocolates or taking her to a restaurant, make her test your culinary skills. Bake a cake for her or surprise her by preparing her favourite dish. Do not be scared of the taste, because ‘everything is fair in love and war’.

Go on a double date this Valentine's Day

New York: Believe it! Striking up a friendship with another couple in which you discuss personal details of your life may bring you closer to your own partner.

Researchers suggest picking a double-date activity that facilitates personal disclosure this Valentine's Day would be a good idea.

Representational picture

Going on a double date may be more effective at re-igniting passion in your own relationship than the classic candle-lit dinner for two.

“Passionate love is one of the first dimensions of love to decrease in couples over time as the newness of a relationship begins to wane,” said Keith Welker, a doctoral student at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

“Any setting where couples can talk, exchange information about each other and respond to each other in a validating, thoughtful manner could apply,” explained Welker.

Welker, with his adviser Rich Slatcher wanted to extend the research to investigate how self-disclosure between couples affects closeness and feelings of passionate love.

“We were expecting that the formation of a friendship between two couples in the lab would increase closeness and relationship satisfaction," said Welker.

However, they found the robustness of the effects on passionate love surprising in two studies with about 150 couples.

“The more that the other couple responds to your self-disclosures in a validating and caring way when on a double date, the more passionate you feel about your own relationship,” explained Welker.

One very practical application could be going out to dinner with another couple.

But opt for dinner at home as that would ensure more disclosure than a date at a restaurant!

At one point I was asked the same question on and on and on. Even my parents were asking when you are going to get married. So, I asked my mom, 'Do you want me to be happy?' or ‘Do you want me to get married?’ because to get married just like that I can get married to anyone just like that tomorrow. But you want me to be married or be happy. So that was the last time she ever asked me about it. Music Review: Marjaavaan

<p dir="ltr"><strong>EXPECTATIONS</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">Well before Marjaavaan was gearing up for release, a lot was being spoken about the music that had been put together for the romantic action drama. With the soundtrack comprising of almost a dozen songs, it was further established loud and clear that music would play a major role in taking forward the narrative of this Milap Zaveri directed film. Multiple composers, lyricists and singers come together to put together music of Marjaavaan which has multiple recreated versions of the yesteryear hits as well.</p> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1059330" src="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Marjaavaan-Music-Review.jpg" alt="Marjaavaan Music Review" width="750" height="450" /> <p dir="ltr"><strong>MUSIC</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">As expected, it’s an out and out love song 'Tum Hi Aana' that opens the soundtrack of Marjaavaan. Payal Dev is the composer of this beautiful melody that should find its way into one of the most popular love songs of 2019. Pretty well written by Kunaal Vermaa whose lyrics are heart rendering to say the least, the strength of 'Tum Hi Aana' also lies in the manner Jubin Nautiyal sings this one. No wonder, as many as four versions of the song are heard with Jubin also going for a happy and sad version each and then pairing up with Dhvani Bhanushali for a duet too.</p> <p dir="ltr">The love song that takes the soundtrack forward is 'Thodi Jagah' which has really sentimental lyrics put together by Rashmi Virag. Moreover, with Arijit Singh taking over the center-stage, you know that the outcome would be straight from the heart, and that indeed turns out to be the case as well. Reminding one of the kind of music that was heard in Aashiqui 2, this one is an original composition by Tanishk Bagchi who does quite well here. Later, the song is heard in Tulsi Kumar's voice as well and she too is impressive with her rendition here.</p> <p dir="ltr">Tanishk Bagchi gets into a recreation mode soon after though with as many as two numbers to his credit, 'Ek Toh Kum Zindagani' and 'Haiya Ho'. Both songs are originally written by Indeevar and have late Firoz Khan as the director. While 'Ek Toh Kum Zindagani' is a Kalyanji-Anandji composition ['Pyar Do Pyar Lo'] from Janbaaz, 'Haiya Ho' is based on Laxmikant-Pyarelal's 'Chahe Meri Jaan Tu Le Le' from Dayavan.</p> <p dir="ltr">Though Neha Kakkar's rendition is just apt as she comes with an apt follow up to Sapna Mukherjee's voice, the male inclusion by Yash Narvekar in 'Ek Toh Kum Zindagani' could have been totally avoided. On the other hand Tulsi Kumar &amp; Jubin Nautiyal's rendition of 'Haiyaa Ho' [originally sung by Jolly Mukherjee and Sapna Mukherjee] turns out to be actually a better version and could well have been more aggressively promoted.</p> <p dir="ltr">Another recreated version that arrives next is 'Kinna Sona' which has Meet Bros and Kumaar coming up with their own take with Jubin Nautiyal &amp; Dhvani Bhanushali doing the honors behind the mike. This one in fact turns out to be rather mild in comparison to the versions that one has heard in the past and surprisingly also takes a lot of time to actually come to the point.</p> <p dir="ltr">Next to arrive are situational numbers that remind one of songs like these that were placed in the action packed narrative of the 70s and the 80s. As a matter of fact this genre of songs are still quote popular in films being made down South and it is apparent that Milap Zaveri was influenced by that style of filmmaking here. No wonder, he has Palak Muchhal lead from the front for 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram' which is composed by Tanishk Bagchi, written by Manoj Muntashir and appears just before the climax of the film. A passable track.</p> <p dir="ltr">The one that does lend goose bumps though is Aditya Dev composed 'Hasbi Rabbi' which has Altamash Faridi &amp; Kamaal Khan come up with the kind of rendition that has a haunting appeal. Based on traditional lyrics, this one too is old fashioned in style but goes well with the overall treatment of the film. The version that did elevate the proceedings of the film is 'Hasbi Rabbi Naat' which is composed by Sanjay Chaudhary and written and sung by Mujtaba Aziz Naza. This one lends a short and impactful closure to the soundtrack.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>OVERALL</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">The music of Marjaavaan is quite satisfying and is in fact even better than expected. A well rounded affair which has everything for everyone, be it the masses or the classes, Marjaavaan would be picked up by music lovers in time to come as well.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>OUR PICK(S)</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">'Tum Hi Aana', 'Thodi Jagah', 'Ek Toh Kum Zindagaani', 'Haiya Ho'</p>

COVID-19: Over 117 million children at risk of missing out on measles vaccines

As coronavirus pandemic deepens, over 117 million children in 37 countries are expected to miss out on receiving live-saving measles vaccine, the United Nations said on Tuesday. Measles immunisation campaigns in 24 countries have already been delayed and more will be postponed, the World Health Organization and the UN children's fund UNICEF said. "Together, more than 117 million children in 37 countries, many of whom live in regions with ongoing measles outbreaks, could be impacted by the suspension of scheduled immunisation activities," Measles and Rubella Initiative (M&RI) said in a statement.

New WHO guidelines endorsed by the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation aim to help countries to sustain immunisation activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. "The @MeaslesRubella Initiative supports recommendations to: temporarily pause preventive immunisation campaigns where there's no active outbreak of a vaccine-preventable disease continue routine immunisation services, while ensuring the safety of communities and health workers," the statement added.

Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. Before the introduction of measles vaccine in 1963 and widespread vaccination, major epidemics occurred approximately every 2-3 years and measles caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year globally. More than 140,000 people died from measles in 2018 - mostly children under the age of 5, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine.

The coronavirus has affected 210 countries and territories around the world. There have been 1,391,468 positive cases of COVID-19 globally and 591,751 people have died due to the deadly infection so far.

COVID-19: Six Indian companies working on vaccine

Six Indian companies are working on a vaccine for COVID-19, joining global efforts to find a quick preventive for the deadly infection spreading rapidly across the world, says a top Indian scientist. Nearly 70 'vaccine candidates' are being tested and at least three have moved to the human clinical trial stage, but a vaccine for the novel coronavirus is unlikely to be ready for mass use before 2021. As COVID-19 infects more than 1.9 million in the world and claims 1,26,000 lives, Indian scientists are also part of the global fight against the disease.

"While Zydus Cadila is working on two vaccines, Serum Institute, Biological E, Bharat Biotech, Indian Immunologicals, and Mynvax are developing one vaccine each," Gagandeep Kang, executive director of the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad, told PTI. Kang is also vice chair of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), which noted in a recent study that the "global vaccine R&D effort in response to the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented in terms of scale and speed".

But it is a complicated process with many stages of testing and many challenges, explained experts. A vaccine for the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, may not take 10 years that other vaccines do but it could be at least a year before it is proven safe, effective, and made widely available, they said. "Vaccine development is a lengthy process which often takes years, with many challenges," said E. Sreekumar, chief scientific officer at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) in Kerala.

"Generally, vaccines take several months to pass the different stages of testing, and then approvals also take time. For COVID-19, we don't expect a vaccine to come in this year," agreed Rakesh Mishra, director of the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad. Vaccine testing typically begins with animal and lab testing before going on to different stages of human testing.

"The human testing phase is composed of many phases," Sreekumar told PTI. "Phase one trials are small-scale, usually involving few participants, to assess whether the vaccine is safe for humans. Phase two trials often involve several hundred subjects, and mainly evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine against the disease," he said.
The final phase involves thousands of people to further assess the efficacy of the vaccine over a defined period of time, and can last several months, Sreekumar said.
"That is why we don't see a vaccine coming in at least a year from now."

Even after the vaccine is ready, he explained, there are a lot of challenges, including whether the vaccine is effective in all populations, and if it can be used for different strains of the novel coronavirus, which might start mutating as time passes. "There are lots of vaccines which are being tested for COVID-19, some of which are in the stage 1 clinical trial," Mishra added.

"But we still don't know how fast they will proceed towards a vaccine and they can take several months to reach any point," he said. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), three vaccine candidates are in the clinical testing phase, meaning they are able to be tested on humans, while nearly 70 are in the preclinical phase -- either in lab testing, or animal studies. Though Kang named six companies, the WHO has listed only Zydus Cadila and Serum Institute from India as among the global firms working on a COVID-19 vaccine.

As of April 8, 2020, said CEPI, the global COVID-19 vaccine R&D landscape includes 115 vaccine candidates, of which 78 are confirmed as active and 37 are unconfirmed.
Of the 78 confirmed active projects, 73 are currently at exploratory or preclinical stages, noted the CEPI team in an analysis published in the journal Nature reviews drug Discovery last week.

The most advanced candidates have recently moved into clinical development, including mRNA-1273 from US-based biotechnology company Moderna, Ad5-nCoV from Chinese biopharma company CanSino Biologicals, and INO-4800 from American pharmaceuticals company Inovio. Others in this list include LV-SMENP-DC and pathogen-specific aAPC from Shenzhen Geno-Immune Medical Institute in China.

Numerous other vaccine developers have indicated plans to initiate human testing in 2020, the CEPI scientists said. Experts believe the genome sequencing of the new coronavirus provided by scientists in China shows it shares 79 per cent of the same genetic material as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and 50 per cent of the same material as Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), a species of coronavirus which infects humans, bats, and camels.

This allows developers to use groundwork already created in research for vaccines for those viruses. Australia's national science agency CSIRO announced earlier this month that it has begun preclinical tests of a vaccine developed by Oxford University in the UK. A striking feature of the vaccine development landscape for COVID-19 is the range of technology platforms being evaluated, including nucleic acid (DNA and RNA), virus-like particle, live weakened virus, and inactivated virus approaches.

The CEPI noted that many of these platforms are not currently the basis for licensed vaccines, but experience in fields such as oncology is encouraging developers to exploit the opportunities that next-generation approaches offer for increased speed of development and manufacture.

Coronavirus: Shashi Tharoor appreciates 'great job' by Harsh Vardhan and Health Ministry

New Delhi: Congress Lok Sabha MP leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday appreciated Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan and his colleagues in the ministry for doing "great job" amid COVID-19 outbreak.

"Thanks for the response @drharshvardhan! You &your colleagues are doing a great job in difficult circumstances. Guess this means that it won't be long before Thiruvananthapuram is off the hotspot list, as Kerala has categorised it in a lower tier than the most affected districts," Tharoor tweeted.

Tagging the minister in a tweet earlier, the Congress leader asked why Thiruvananthapuram is listed as a COVID-19 hotspot.

"A bit curious as to why Thiruvananthapuram is listed as a #Covid19 hotspot when it has such a great track record!? Perhaps @MoHFW_INDIA can enlighten us?" Tharoor, the Lok MP from Thiruvananthapuram had tweeted.

Responding to the Congress leader, Harsh Vardhan said there are 170 hotspot districts, 207 non-hotspot & rest non-infected.

India's total number of coronavirus positive cases has climbed to 13,387 including 11,201 active cases, 1,749 cured/discharged/migrated and 437 deaths, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said today.

Coronavirus outbreak: Raj Bhavan shouldn't become centre for political conspiracy, says Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday indirectly targeted Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari by saying that the Raj Bhavan "shouldn't become centre for political conspiracy".

In a sharp attack on Koshyari - without naming him - the Sena MP said he was somehow reminded of a 'shameless' governor, the late Thakur Ram Lal, who served in the Raj Bhavan in Andhra Pradesh in the early 1980s.

"Remember! History doesn't spare those who behave unconstitutionally. Samajhne walon ko ishaara kaafi hai!" Raut said in tweets on Sunday.

The Sena MP's outburst is viewed against the backdrop of a recent Maharashtra Cabinet request to the Governor to nominate Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray as a Member of the Legislative Council for one of the two vacant seats from the Governor's quota.

This is to prevent a constitutional crisis as Thackeray must become a member of either house of the state legislature by May 28, failing which he would be required to step down.

In view of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Centre has postponed all elections, but the picture is likely to become clear after May 3.

Thackeray was unanimously elected as the leader of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance government of Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and Congress, and took oath as the CM on November 28, 2019.

Coronavirus outbreak: Over 10,000 private buses not willing to ply in Kerala post-lockdown

As and when the present lockdown norms are lifted, over 10,000 private bus owners have decided to inform the Kerala government, that they will not be operating their buses, as strict social distancing norms will leave them reeling in losses. The bus owners points out that even without any such norms, they are incurring heavy losses and with this new scenario, they will be unable to operate.

Hence they will request the Transport Department to keep the buses in the garage and under the G Form application, they will not have to pay the road taxes also, as the buses will not be operating. State Transport Minister A.K.Saseendran said that their concerns are genuine under the new circumstances.

IIT-Delhi develops COVID-19 test kit, gets ICMR's approval

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi has developed a COVID-19 test kit, which has got the approval of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). "We started working on it by the end of January and got it ready in three months. We wanted to contribute to affordable low-cost diagnostics that could be used in large numbers," V Perumal, Professor at IIT-Delhi, told ANI.

Perumal said that it is a swab testing kit. "Testing will be cheaper than all existing devices," he said, adding that the device is affordable for commercial production. ICMR had on Thursday approved detection assay for COVID-19, which has been developed by researchers at IIT-Delhi's Kusuma School of Biological Sciences (KSBS).

"The assay has been validated at the ICMR with a sensitivity and specificity of 100 per cent. This makes IIT-Delhi the first academic institute to have obtained ICMR approval for a real-time PCR-based diagnostic assay," read a statement from IIT-Delhi.

This is the first probe-free assay for COVID-19 approved by the ICMR and it will be useful for specific and affordable high throughput testing. It can easily be scaled up as it does not require fluorescent probes. The team is targeting large-scale deployment of the kit at affordable prices with suitable industrial partners as soon as possible.

He also informed that the government has come up with a digital platform to link volunteers of social organisations, representatives of civil society and local administration.

Coronavirus lockdown: Family forced to carry asthma patient on handcart; declared dead on arrival

The family of an asthma patient put him on a handcart when the ambulance did not turn up, but failed to save his life with policemen on the way to hospital and doctors there allegedly ignoring his plight. Both police and medical authorities denied their alleged negligence which the family said led to the death Monday of vegetable vendor Satish Agrawal, who lived in curfew-bound Faithagadi in Kota's Rampura area. Agrawal was carried about half the way to MBS Hospital on the cart from which he sold vegetables, before a private ambulance arrived.

"As none of the ambulance services responded, I put my father on his vegetable cart and started for the hospital over two and a half kilometres away from home," he said. "Though policemen on the way removed barricades at various intersections on the curfew-bound road, none of them thought of helping us and rushing my father in a police vehicle to the hospital," Manish told PTI.

"After Manish had covered over a kilometre till Nayapura circle on the way to MBS Hospital, I somehow managed to hire a private ambulance," another relative said. "Even at the hospital, we were made to shuttle from one room to another and to a makeshift clinic outside the hospital building before doctors eventually attended on him and declared him dead at 2.30 pm," he said.

MBS Hospital's medical superintendent Dr Naveen Saxena, however, refuted the allegation. "Satish Agrawal was brought to the hospital in a collapsed condition and a doctor immediately examined him in room 125 and declared him brought dead," he said. "Sometime later, the family members of the victim, however, said the patient's heart was still beating, following which Dr Lokesh Suwalka re-examined him and conducted an ECG," Dr Saxena said.

"The medical staff did not delay in the treatment," he asserted. On the unavailability of an ambulance, he said the service is managed by the chief medical and health officer. The officer could not be contacted for comment. Kota's Assistant Superintendent of Police Dilip Saini too rejected the family's allegation about policemen ignoring the plight of the patient being carted to a hospital on a handcart.

"It is hypothetical to say that the policemen did not help. The policemen in the area did not have any vehicle or an ambulance, which could have been summoned only from a hospital or the ambulance service numbers 104 or 108," said Saini.

Cannes Film Festival to go online?

With France's ban on events with large gatherings until mid-July, a plan for a virtual version of the Cannes film market, the Marche du Film, might be going ahead in June. The Marche du Film is now setting up a full-on virtual market from June 22-28, confirmed Variety. According to Variety, Jerome Paillard, head of the Marche du Film, is to communicate details about the virtual market on Friday.

However, on April 8, The Cannes film festival director Thierry Fremaux has confirmed that the major event won't take the virtual route if it can't be hosted as a physical event. The film festival also works hand in hand with French distributors and exhibitors who are well represented on the board of the festival. Despite France's three-week lockdown, Fremaux maintains that the festival is carrying on with the selection of films while monitoring the evolution of the pandemic.

The festival recently stated that the key sales agents who represent the majority of titles in the competition have been submitting their films to Cannes' selection committee, and the dates for registration have been extended by a month and a half.

Also, the French culture ministry and the city's mayor are backing the Cannes, and they have announced the launch of a support cell for festivals scheduled for 2020.

Meryl Streep: Dick Van Dyke is practically perfect

Oscar winning-actress Meryl Streep says legendary star Dick Van Dyke has not lost his inner child, and has retained the innocent joy of life despite his years. The actress recently got a chance to work with the 94-year-old Van Dyke in "Mary Poppins Returns".

"He is practically perfect in every way so no wonder he was drawn to the material Mary Poppins. He is somebody who is pure I don't wanna say show business because it conjures up the whole other thing but it's a theatrical sense of joy that he brings," Streep said while talking about her co-star.

"He is uniquely suited to this kind of material mostly because he has got the soul of a 9-and-a-half-year-old. I would say he has not lost his inner child and the things that we often lose as we go on in life. He has retained that innocent sense of joy and that's what he brings to this material," she added.

Disney's "Mary Poppins Returns" stars Emily Blunt as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn an ordinary task into a fantastic adventure. The sequel brought back Mary Poppins to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy missing in their lives following a personal loss.

Rob Marshall has directed the film from a screenplay by David Magee. The screen story is by Magee, Marshall and John DeLuca based upon the Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. PL Travers first introduced the world to the no-nonsense nanny in her 1934 children's book "Mary Poppins".

Opening up about Blunt's singing prowess, Streep said: "She is amazing but her tenderness in this is palpable. Rob and Marc Shaiman, they wrote it with her in mind so the music sits in her voice perfectly. She is amazing in it!"

"Mary Poppins Returns" takes place in the 1930s Depression-era London 24 years after the first film was set. Michael Banks works for the same financial institution that employed his father and still lives at 17 Cherry Tree Lane with his three children, Annabel, John and Georgie and their housekeeper Ellen. When the family suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins magically re-enters their lives and with Jack's help, brings joy and wonder back into their home.

"Mary Poppins Returns" will air in India on Star Movies on April 26.

Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson offer blood to help develop vaccine for Coronavirus

Covid-19 survivors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have offered their blood to help develop a vaccine for coronavirus. In early March, the couple had tested positive for Covid-19 while in Australia. They returned home to Los Angeles at the end of March after recovering.

Hanks said on a podcast last week that he and Wilson volunteered to donate their blood and plasma for coronavirus research, reports variety.com.

"A lot of the questions (are) what do we do now? Is there something we can do? And, in fact, we just found out that we do carry the antibodies," he said. "We have not only been approached, we have said, aDo you want our blood? Can we give plasma?'"

The actor also said that he had a name ready if a coronavirus vaccine is made from his blood donation. "In fact, we will be giving it now to the places that hope to work on what I would like to call the 'Hank-ccine'," he said.

Hanks also said that he and Wilson are feeling "just fine" and "dandy" after their bout with the virus.

Julie Andrews on evading casting couch in Hollywood

Veteran Hollywood actress Julie Andrews says having children and being married to late filmmaker Blake Edwards protected her from the casting couch early in her career. "I was certainly aware of tales about the casting couch," theguardian.com quoted Andrews as saying.

"But I was so busy working and raising my kids and being married to Blake Edwards eventually, it was an extremely busy life, and to a certain extent that put a protective fence around me, I think," she added. It was in 1964 when she got her big break in Hollywood with the role of Mary Poppins. Andrews got married to Edwards in 1969. In the 1970s, the couple adopted two daughters -- Amy in 1974 and Joanna in 1975.

Andrews was born as Julia Wells in Surrey in 1935. Her father was a "gentle and adoring" man Ted Wells and mother Barbara Morris was erratic. When she was young, her parents split up. Andrews went on to live with her mother and step-father Ted Andrews -- who was not only an alcoholic but also tried to get into Andrews' bed two times, as mentioned in the piece.

Asked if her desire to adopt children stemmed from her turbulent childhood, Andrews said: "I think it had more to do with -- well, you know, I was just a working girl in my teens, travelling around England, singing my heart out, learning my craft. But once I got to Broadway and Hollywood, the films drew me into that particular work, and I found that it was what I wanted to embrace, because it was giving me so much pleasure."

"Those movies led me into this concern for kids, and I think probably subliminally I was trying to give them as good a feeling as I could. I have no idea if that comes from my own childhood. It was just the way I stumbled forward in the world. Does that make sense? I hope it does," added the actress, who was referring to iconic films "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound Of Music".
