World’s first non-cellular 5G technology, ETSI DECT-2020, gets ITU-R approval, setting example of new era connectivity

ETSI DECT-2020 NR, the world’s first non-cellular 5G technology standard, has been recognized by the WP5D of the International Telecommunication Union’s Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) and included as part of the 5G standards in IMT-2020 technology recommendation. Dr. Günter Kleindl, Chair of the ETSI Technical Committee DECT, says: “With our traditional DECT standard we already received IMT-2000 approval by ITU-R twenty-one years ago, but the requirements for 5G were so much higher, that we had to develop a completely new, but compatible, radio standard.” Released last year, the standard sets an example of future connectivity: the infrastructure-less and autonomous, decentralized technology is designed for massive IoT networks for enterprises. It has no single points of failure and is accessible to anyone, costing only a fraction of the cellular networks both in dollars and in carbon footprint.

ETSI releases first comprehensive global standard for securing smart phones

Today our smartphones and tablets are fundamental for citizens and hold a wide range of user data and apps. At the same time, security attacks have increased with malicious applications and network eavesdropping. To define security and assurance requirements for smart phones and tablets, mitigate potential risks and protect users, ETSI has released a world class standard called Consumer Mobile Device Protection Profile, ETSI TS 103 732. The specification identifies key security and privacy risks for user data and provides appropriate protection.

ETSI Advanced Mobile Location standard now permits European smartphones to send caller location in emergency calls

Since 17 March all smartphones sold in Europe are required to comply with Advanced Mobile Location for emergency communications. AML was standardized in ETSI TS 103 625 by the ETSI technical committee on emergency communications (EMTEL) in December 2019. It is already helping emergency services dispatch the needed resources efficiently in Europe and worldwide.

New ETSI White Paper and MEC Hackathon: another step to engage with app developers and verticals

The ETSI MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing) group is pleased to announce a new White Paper which aims to describe the deployment options related to MEC federation, especially from an architectural point of view. With a key focus on ETSI MEC implementations, it also aims to provide an open approach taking into account other standards and technologies, including those from 3GPP SA Working Group 6 and GSMA OPG. For this purpose, the White Paper first analyses the recent publications of GSMA OPG and recent updates in ETSI MEC and 3GPP specifications, then introduces the synergized architecture supported by both standards organizations, which indicates the background information for the deployment of MEC federation harmonized standards for edge computing.

ETSI releases new specification on Quality of Service for F5G

The ETSI's 5^th-Generation Fixed Network group (F5G ISG) has released a new specification, ETSI GS F5G 005 on “High-Quality Service Experience Factors”. This specification studies the end-to-end Quality of Experience (QoE) factors for services over the broadband network. High QoE reflects the overall performance of services from the end user's perspective. It also analyses the general factors that impact service performance and identifies the overall high-QoE dimensions for each service, mainly using Virtual Reality (VR) as a benchmark for F5G applications.

The I3C Interface for SSP joins the family of specifications that underpin the ETSI SSP, the next-generation platform for Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) and Secure Elements to meet new market requirements driven by emerging Internet of Things (IoT), 5G and other security-sensitive applications.

New ETSI specification allows single UICC to support the use of multiple applications simultaneously

New specifications released by ETSI will enable multiple subscriptions and identities to exist in the same smartphone handset without needing several SIM cards to be within the device.

The mobile telecom industry has been facing an increasing demand for applications running on mobile devices like banking, payments, transport and identity for some time. These new specifications address this demand by adding the possibility to host and address several "virtual secure elements" into the same UICC. This allows multiple virtual secure elements to coexist logically separated, whilst having the ability to be addressed independently through the same physical interface.

This pioneering document addresses the increasingly important issue of safeguarding individuals from coercive control through the misuse of consumer Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Coercive control encompasses a range of abusive acts such as security breaches, privacy invasions, harassment, physical assault, and other patterns of behaviour that can limit autonomy or cause emotional harm to potential targets.

ETSI’s first LTA Signature Augmentation and Validation Plugtests™ has seen international participants exchange over 35 000 digital signature validation reports.

Held from 23 October - 22 December 2023, the remote interoperability event was organized by the ETSI Centre for Testing and Interoperability (CTI), on behalf of ETSI’s Technical Committee for Electronic Signatures and Trust Infrastructures (TC ESI). This Plugtests™ event was facilitated with the support and co-funding of the European Commission (EC) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

Conducted using a dedicated web portal, sessions over the month-long Plugtests™ attracted the involvement of 190 participants from 121 organizations across 38 countries.

This year’s first ETSI Conference on Non-Terrestrial Networks has stressed the importance of technical standardization in delivering a fully connected planet via NTN, a key element of tomorrow’s global 6G networks.

Held from 3-4 April 2024 at ETSI’s Sophia Antipolis headquarters, the event was co-organized with the European Space Agency (ESA), the 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) and the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU).

Titled ‘Non-Terrestrial Networks, a Native Component of 6G’, the 2-day conference attracted over 200 participants from 25 countries, including experts in standardization and research as well as industrial representation from the mobile, satellite and wider space industries. Delegates shared perspectives on NTN use cases, candidate technology solutions, current research status and standardization roadmaps. Day one sessions focused on the opportunities and challenges of integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks within tomorrow’s global communications landscape. The second day afforded a deep dive into numerous cutting-edge NTN and 6G research & development initiatives in Europe and around the world.

The ETSI TeraFlowSDN community is proud to announce the third release of TeraFlowSDN, an innovative and robust SDN orchestrator and controller, delivering a fully featured Network Automation Platform. In this latest release, TeraFlowSDN enhances its capabilities with the integration of an Optical SDN controller, expanding device support to include gNMI and OpenConfig protocols. It also features enriched network integrations for end-to-end orchestration like IP over DWDM, L3VPN, MEC, and network topology exposure. The management of network topologies is improved with the addition of a new BGP-LS speaker able to discover the topologies, and a new Forecaster component is introduced, providing predictive insights for network management.
