SocialConnect

SocialConnect is the only Joomla extension that allows you to integrate your Joomla site with social networks and identity providers for user authentication, posting content directly to social networks and 3rd-party comment system integration.

Features

Let your users register to your website with their social profile from Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, Github, WordPress.com, Microsoft (Outlook.com, Hotmail, SkyDrive, Windows Live, Windows Phone & Xbox Live), Amazon, Disqus, Foursquare, Instagram, StackExchange, SoundCloud & Tumblr.

AutoPost to Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn right from the Joomla article or K2 item edit forms!

Add Facebook Open Graph and Twitter Card tags on each K2 item or Joomla article to make your content even more social media ready.

Enable Disqus or Facebook comments on your K2 items, Joomla articles, Virtuemart or RedShop product pages.

Avatars for your users from their social profile, K2 or Gravatar.com

Better login and registration pages, with multiple layouts to choose from. Users also get a customizable landing page after login.

Easily check how many concurrent users browse your site and see who's logged into your site and from which social network.

Easy to configure with a simple, yet elegant "status" dashboard in Joomla's backend.

Use the SocialConnect Twitter module to display one ore more streams of tweets for any Twitter account & style it the way you want, unlike the official Twitter widget which is too "design restrictive" when it comes to embedding.

Beautiful & customizable frontend

SocialConnect comes with a set of predefined layouts to use right out of the box - or customize anyway you like. Consistency between the component & module layouts make your user "not think" and thus easier to engage with your e-shop, forum, community or other type of site that utilizes user engagement. Check out the available component and module layouts below for more.

  • Remember that ugly login page in Joomla? Now you can forget about it. A simple layout that can easily fit any Joomla template design - distinct blocks for the available user actions. Don't make your user think. Make it easy for them to join your site. The layout you see here is one of the 3 bundled with SocialConnect.
  • The second layout gives more focus to the registration process. Like the first layout, it allows you to have an optional descriptive text communicating to your users why they should sign up/register to your website.
  • The 3rd layout is a variation of the first one and it's ideal for single-column layouts. The optional welcome text in on the left of the sign-in block, while registration is at the bottom. Perfect for minimal designs or for clear focus on the registration/sign-in process.
  • Like the component, the SocialConnect module comes with 2 layouts as well. A compact layout that reveals the login/registration actions for your user, which can easily fit on your site's header or toolbar. The official K2 website uses the compact layout at the top-right.
  • ...And an "expanded" layout, ideal for using SocialConnect in the sidebar of your Joomla e-shop or forum. The layout is generic enough to easily fit any design. Maintaining a consistent login block across your site will not make your user wonder "where" they login when browsing through the pages of your site.

Integrates with all the major social networks

Post to Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn
right from the Joomla backend

Posting to Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn just got easier. No need to use an external paid service like HootSuite or Buffer to cross-post your content to these social networks. No need to bother managing users for such services. Just have your content authors post directly from the Joomla article or K2 item edit forms directly to your social media accounts in Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. It's that simple!

Simple Image Gallery

Adding image galleries inside your Joomla articles is now super-easy and simple, using the magical "Simple Image Gallery" plugin for Joomla.

The plugin can turn any folder of images located inside your Joomla website into a grid-style image gallery with cool lightbox previews. And all that using a simple plugin tag like {gallery}myphotos{/gallery}.

So for example, if we have a folder called "my_trip_to_Paris" located in images/stories/my_trip_to_Paris, then we can create our gallery by simply entering the tag {gallery}my_trip_to_Paris{/gallery} into some Joomla article.

The galleries created are presented as a grid of image thumbnails. When your visitors click on a thumbnail, they see the original image in a lightbox popup. The thumbnails are generated and cached using PHP for better results.

So let's briefly see the main advantages of using Simple Image Gallery on your Joomla website:

  • you don't need to have an additional gallery component to display a few images,
  • you don't need to tell your visitors "to see our photos from Paris click here" and
  • you focus more on content writing and less on administering the images!

The plugin is ideal for news portals wanting to display some product images, for example, inside their articles. Or for people who quickly wanna show their summer vacation pictures. With Simple Image Gallery, you can have as many galleries as you want inside each article.

Since v3.6.0, the image gallery grid can be printed when using the print preview feature available in most Joomla components (including the default article system component and K2).

Please note that if you want to create a gallery from a subfolder located inside your "image gallery root folder", simply adjust the plugin syntax to reflect the remaining path (after your set "root folder"), e.g. {gallery}folder/subfolder/othersubfolder{/gallery}. Make sure you write the path to your target folder without any slashes at the beginning or the end of your path.

As of v4.0.0, Simple Image Gallery is also compatible with the upcoming Joomla version 4 release (currently in "beta").

You can see a demo of the plugin here: https://demo.joomlaworks.net/simple-image-gallery

AllVideos

AllVideos (by JoomlaWorks) is the universal media player for Joomla and a classic must-have extension for any Joomla based website.

Use the plugin to easily embed video & audio content from all major 3rd party media providers (YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Twitch, Facebook, Flickr & SoundCloud) inside your Joomla articles, K2, Virtuemart, Kunena and any other Joomla component that supports "content" plugins.

Additionally, it allows you to playback any web-native video/audio file format hosted on your server or even a remote server, providing great flexibility when it comes to media content embedding. Fun videos, product presentations, audio podcasts, you name it!

WHY ALLVIDEOS?

  • You don't have to copy/paste huge blocks of HTML code, just to get a video from YouTube to playback on your Joomla website. Your WYSIWYG editor in Joomla loves it and so will you and your clients!
  • You use simple plugin tags like {youtube}https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5lGNkS5TE0{/youtube} (or just {youtube}g5lGNkS5TE0{/youtube}), {mp4}holiday_in_rome{/mp4} or {mp3}pixies_bonemachine{/mp3}.

FEATURES

  1. All major 3rd party media providers are supported: YouTube (single videos & playlists), Vimeo, Dailymotion, Twitch, Facebook (for videos), Flickr (for videos) & SoundCloud. Use simple plugin tags utilizing the full media page URL (e.g. {youtube}https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5lGNkS5TE0{/youtube}) or just the ID from the media URL page (e.g {youtube}g5lGNkS5TE0{/youtube}).
  2. Stream your own media content using web-native video and audio formats like H.264/MPEG-4 (.mp4/.m4v/.m4a), WebM (.webm), Ogg Theora Vorbis (.ogg/.ogv/.oga), MP3 (.mp3), WAVE PCM (.wav) & FLAC (.flac), as well as generic containers like .avi & .mkv. For non web-native media embedded with older version of AllVideos (prior to version 5.0.0), which are not supported by modern browsers, a download message will be presented - this basically includes Flash Video (.flv/.f4v), ShockWave Flash (.swf), Windows Media (.wmv/.wma), QuickTime (.mov/.mpg/.mpeg/.3gp/.3g2/.aac), DivX (.divx) etc.
  3. Easily embed your media content either directly from your server or a remote server.
  4. Use custom preview (poster) images for self-hosted video & audio files. For videos specifically (and unlike any other similar solution in Joomla), AllVideos can auto-generate preview images from the 5th second of each video by utilizing modern browser features.
  5. Need a simple way to have random preview images for your self-hosted audio files? Enable the Unsplash.com integration and your audio files will use random music/audio related images as previews from the popular stock image service.
  6. Use AllVideos to display background videos with muted sound.
  7. Simple controls inside the plugin's parameters page provide layout consistency on all the videos shown in your Joomla website. Set your preferences in seconds, publish the plugin and you're ready to start embedding media content!
  8. Easy, descriptive syntax for media embedding - {format OR provider}filename{/format OR provider}. You can also use syntax like {format OR provider}filename|width|height|autoplay{/format OR provider} (e.g. an "autoplaying" YouTube video with {youtube}he73js82|600|450|1{/youtube}) to display media at different dimensions.
  9. Uses MVC templating. Just copy the /tmpl folder included in the plugin, into your Joomla template's /html folder and rename it to "jw_allvideos", then style the output as you wish.
  10. Includes 3 templates: Classic, Framed and Responsive
  11. Fully responsive media playback when using the "Responsive" template.
  12. Uses the core Joomla updater.

COMPATIBILITY

AllVideos is fully compatible with Joomla versions 1.5, 2.5, 3.x & 4.x on servers running PHP 5 or 7.

LICENSE

AllVideos is a Joomla plugin developed by JoomlaWorks, released under the GNU General Public License.

Why Is It So Hard to Improve Reading Achievement?

Interesting question. Before I answer, let me ask one: What keeps Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, up at night? You know Amazon, the trillion-dollar corporation that delivers something like a 5 billion packages a year. I’m at a professional meeting. The chair asks what “levers” we have for improving reading achievement in the U.S. It’s an easy question. There are so many possibilities. The first one most folks think of is, the teacher. If teachers did better, kids would do better.

s

For Our Struggling Readers

Confession I always had students who entered my fourth grade class reading significantly below grade level. And each year, when I passed them on to fifth grade, those students were still behind. I did everything I knew how to do — I taught Guided Reading lessons, provided independent reading time, found them books to love, replied to readers’ response journals- but no matter what I tried in my Balanced Literacy classroom, the achievement gap persisted.

s

If Students Meet a Standard with Below Grade Level Texts, Are They Meeting the Standard?

Teacher question: When working with state educational standards are the expectations for the student to be able to accomplish each of the standards with grade level text. Some of us believe that if a fourth-grade student can determine the main idea in a second-grade text that the student has mastered that standard. Please help us settle this argument. Shanahan's response:

How Can We Take Advantage of Reading–Writing Relationships?

Teacher question: Everyone says reading and writing are connected. But our school focuses on only reading. We have a reading program (we don’t have a writing program). We test the students three times a year in reading, but never in writing. Writing isn’t even on our report card, though I guess it is part of Language Arts. What should we be doing with writing? Shanahan's response: You came to the right place. I think your school is making a big mistake not giving sufficient attention to writing.

Prior Knowledge, Or He Isn't Going to Pick on the Baseball Study

Teacher question: You wrote recently that it was a good idea to teach comprehension skills, but our school district says we shouldn’t, that it’s prior knowledge that matters. Do you know the baseball study? Have you read Natalie Wexler’s research? It is really difficult to trust research when everyone tells us something different. Shanahan's response:  I feel your pain.

s

Which Text Levels Should We Teach With?

Teacher question: I’m confused. I’ve worked with Lexiles for years and my district provided us with a chart showing the levels of books to use for each grade level. Then Common Core came along with a different chart that put different book levels with each grade level. I don’t live in a Common Core state, but I’m still not sure which chart to use. Can you help me? Shanahan's response:  It’s funny, but no one has ever asked me that before.

AllVideos v5.0.0 released - now with web-native media playback

We have just released a major update to AllVideos, version 5.0.0, for Joomla versions 1.5 to 3.x.

It introduces web-native media playback with no 3rd party dependencies.

Here's what's been added or changed in this new release of AllVideos:

  • AllVideos now supports web-native media only (for self-hosted files) and uses browser-native playback controls, without a single 3rd party dependency. AllVideos will now load a single CSS file for its template and a single JS file to assist in self-hosted media playback - a total of less than 7KBs. As such, both Clappr and JW Player have been removed from AllVideos, as well as any helper JS files that were previously utilized for media playback (e.g. for QuickTime).
  • Modern media playback includes video and audio formats like H.264/MPEG-4 (.mp4/.m4v/.m4a), WebM (.webm), Ogg Theora Vorbis (.ogg/.ogv/.oga), MP3 (.mp3), WAVE PCM (.wav) & FLAC (.flac). AllVideos will also playback .avi and .mkv files as they are used as container formats for H.264/MPEG-4 most of the times. Every other format that was previously supported by AllVideos (e.g. Flash Video, QuickTime or Windows Media), will now appear as a link to download the file as browsers no longer support playback directly or require plugin activation to do so. By utilizing modern media playback only, we ensure that AllVideos can be used as your go-to solution for media embedding across any device.
  • By using web-native media formats in AllVideos, we can now do cool stuff like auto-generate poster/preview images for videos, without the need for server-side software (like FFMPEG). If you already uploaded your own poster/preview images, well, don't worry as they will still take precedence over the auto-generated ones.
  • Added support for custom poster/preview images for both video and audio utilizing the .webp format. This means you can now use all 4 web-native image formats for previews (jpg/png/gif/webp). For added fun, try using animated GIFs as your media preview :)
  • Support for small 3rd party video providers has been dropped, as most are now either defunct or using a service like YouTube for serving content (e.g. Funny or Die or GodTube). This means that AllVideos will now support only the 6 major media providers: YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion, Facebook (videos), Flickr (videos) and SoundCloud.
  • All 3 templates in AllVideos have been re-configured and tested across all device types. The "Responsive" template is of course still the default template when you install AllVideos for the first time.
  • A new option has been added that allows you to limit the maximum width responsive media can occupy. This will come handy with sites that extend beyond 1200px in width as media can be limited to a percentage of the page's width or to a fixed pixel size (e.g. no more than 1000px width for media playback).
  • You can now allow your visitors to directly download a self-hosted video file (previously possible for audio files only).
  • The options have been significantly simplified with the removal of Clappr & JW Player as well as the removal of QuickTime support.
  • AllVideos continues to be PHP 5 to 7 compatible, for Joomla 1.5 to 3.x. There is really no reason to ditch support for PHP 5 and/or Joomla 1.5/2.5 when it's easy to maintain support for them. Neither security nor performance are sacrificed either way.

Simple Image Gallery Pro v3.7.0 released

Simple Image Gallery Pro v3.7.0 is now available to download for subscribers. This new release introduces 2 additional popup engines (modals) and improves compatibility with K2 v2.10.x.

Here's what's been added or changed in Simple Image Gallery Pro with the release of v3.7.0:

  • Added Strip & Lightbox2 to the list of supported popup engines (modals). Strip allows for displaying your galleries on the right side of the available viewport and it's ideal for product display/presentation or e-commerce websites. Lightbox2 is the original Lightbox script updated for the modern web by its original author, Lokesh Dhakar.
  • Updated Fresco.js to its latest release. Additionally, the Fresco.js specific attributes on each gallery layout link are now removed as they are appended dynamically using JS (so older gallery layouts can work fine as well, without any modifications). Fresco.js is now also fully open source which means there is no watermark on the popup/modal.
  • LightView now supports captions as well.
  • Improved compatibility (and performance) with K2 v2.10.x which was released mid November 2019. Especially for anyone still on Joomla 1.5 and K2 v2.10.x, we highly recommend you update to resolve JS conflicts between K2 and SIGPro in the item edit form.
  • Fixed a bug where SIGPro's K2 plugin would accidentally trigger upon saving a K2 category in K2 v2.10.x.
  • In the backend component, SIGPro's media manager (elFinder) has been updated to the latest release (v2.1.50).

SocialConnect v1.10.0 released

SocialConnect v1.10.0 is now available to download for subscribers. This new release improves compatibility with recent API changes in Facebook and LinkedIn.

Here's what's been added or changed in SocialConnect with the release of v1.10.0:

  • Facebook authorization in SocialConnect's settings will now render both your personal account as well as all Facebook Pages that you have access to (for posting content). Listing pages broke due to a recent change in Facebook's API. Additionally, all API calls will now use v2.12 of their API.
  • LinkedIn login and auto-posting now both use version 2 of the LinkedIn API - this also resolves auto-posting to LinkedIn failing because of the deprecation of version 1 of their API. Please keep in mind that posting directly to LinkedIn company pages is not yet allowed by the LinkedIn API.

To refresh your integration with either Facebook or LinkedIn, simply re-authorize your accounts from the SocialConnect settings.

As a reminder, 2 new options were added in the previous release (v1.9.0) under "Advanced Settings" ("Enforce HTTPS" & "Enforce absolute URL when posting to social") which address edge cases where social login failed (namely in sites behind CloudFlare that utilize "Flexible SSL") or auto posting failed (the shared URL was rendered relative instead of absolute).

AllVideos v6.0.0 released - now Joomla 4 compatible!

Version 6.0.0 of AllVideos is now available. This is a feature release, which also introduces full support with the upcoming Joomla version 4 release.

Here's what's been added or changed in this new release of AllVideos:

  • Fully compatible with the upcoming Joomla version 4 (currently in "beta"). As with every beta software, Joomla 4 should not be used on production websites, but rather for preparing your skills for when it's officially released as the next "stable" Joomla version. You can download the nightly build of Joomla 4.0.0 "Beta 1" here: https://developer.joomla.org/nightly-builds.html
  • Added new "muted" option for initial playback of video files. This option allows you to use AllVideos to embed background videos without sound, either hosted files or videos from YouTube, Vimeo etc.
  • Need a simple way to have random preview images for your hosted audio files? Enable the new Unsplash.com integration and your audio files will use random music/audio related images as previews from the popular stock image service.
  • AllVideos plugin parameters now follow a new unified design (inspired by K2's recent re-design) across all supported Joomla versions.
  • Various code cleanups and improvements.

If you use K2 v2.10.x, we highly recommend you upgrade to this new version of AllVideos.

Getting Snowflake (the open source graphical SSH/SFTP client) to run on macOS

I don't usually write similar blog posts, but I've been really enjoying Snowflake recently. What's Snowflake you ask? Well, it's a new open source graphical SSH/SFTP client which makes working with remote servers a breeze. It works like Panic's Coda when it comes to managing content on remote servers, e.g. browse files and have a terminal open at the same time. But most importantly, it's cross-platform. And I'd like to share with everyone how to easily get it to run on macOS.

At the time, Snowflake's developer has only released binaries for Windows and Debian/Ubuntu with a macOS version planned for the future.

However, since the app is based on Java, the developer also provides Snowflake as a .jar file which we can run anywhere, including macOS.

So here are the steps to get Snowflake to work on your Mac:

Step 1

Uninstall that outdated Java version on your Mac. Ironically the best guide is on Java.com, so follow it to the letter: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/mac_uninstall_java.xml

Step 2

If you currently go to Java.com, the available release for macOS is pretty outdated. And apparently it relates to recent changes in Java's licensing by Oracle.

So how do you get the most recent Java release for macOS? Well, you can either signup for an account at Oracle.com (the looooong, hard way) or just grab a ready-made binary for macOS, provided by AdoptOpenJDK (the easy way). AdoptOpenJDK is a new community effort (backed by the likes of Red Hat/IBM, Amazon, Microsoft to name a few) to create ready-to-install & cross-platform binaries from OpenJDK, the open source implementation of the Java platform.

You can download the most recent runtime for Java from AdoptOpenJDK (version 13 at the time of writing) here: https://adoptopenjdk.net/?variant=openjdk13&jvmVariant=hotspot (it's a .pkg file to install)

Step 3

After you install the related .pkg file, it's time to download Snowflake. Head over to https://github.com/subhra74/snowflake/releases and grab the .jar file from the latest release available (v1.0.4 at the time of writing - https://github.com/subhra74/snowflake/releases/download/v1.0.4/snowflake.jar).

Now we'll make a shortcut to easily launch Snowflake.

Create a folder called "Applications" (if it doesn't already exist) in your home directory and place the snowflake.jar file in there.

Then open up your terminal and do:

chmod +x ~/Applications/snowflake.jar
ln -s ~/Applications/snowflake.jar /Applications/Snowflake.app

That's it.

You'll now find "Snowflake" in your Mac's apps and you can easily launch the app from there, or just drag and drop its icon to your Mac's dock.

(If you get a security warning when you open the app the first time, it's because the app is not signed by Apple. Just go to Preferences and then "Security & Privacy" and you should see the option to allow the app to launch always.)
