Affiliate Summit Sort of Started as a Spite Store

In April 2003, I attended an affiliate marketing event on a cruise ship out of Miami. This was the third year it took place on a ship after an inaugural version on land. Over those years, I met Missy Ward at these events and became conference friends. While sitting at a bar on the ship […]

Online Tech Programs

Wonder why I've been gone so long? I've been watching/listening to a bunch of tech programs that you can get free off the web.

Podcast

Podcasts are great because they are very portable. Just download 'em, sync your favorite mp3 player, and listen. Really, you can listen to them any way you want (computer, cd, etc.)

My favorite podcasts are TWiT (This Week in Tech) and Diggnation. TWiT is made up of the old TechTV crew like Leo Laporte, Kevin Rose, Patrick Norton, Robert Heron and others. If you want hardcore tech check out TWiT. Diggnation is a new podcast put out by Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht. They review the most dug stories from Digg.com and throw in some of their favorites along the way. Diggnation also puts out a video version of the podcast which is hilarious. Watching Kevin and Alex again is really cool.

Apple is getting on the podcast bandwagon with the new version of iTunes. They now have podcasting service built right into the music store. Its really easy to use, and its free. iPodderX still reigns supreme on the Mac, but for everyone else, go get iTunes.

Video
With the fall of TechTV its been hard to find good tech video programs, but now the internet tech shows are becoming alot better. I like Systm, theBroken, and FTS (From the Shadows)
Systm and theBroken are put out by Kevin Rose and Dan Huard. Now that they are working on the shows full time there starting to get better. FTS is another great tech show that Yoshi has been working really hard with.

Apple FINALLY gave in to the pressure to make a multi-function mouse. With the new "Mighty Mouse" you can right/left click, scroll 360 degrees, and program other buttons. Apple didn't sacrifice design for functionality, they accomplished both.

For $49 you can buy one of these new mice for OSX or XP. Yes, the mouse will work with Windows XP.

Text & Link Colors

In the next few minutes I will show how to assign text & link colors for your webpage!

For starters, we need the <BODY></BODY> tags. This is where all your webpage info goes, content, images, etc. But, for now, we will focus on the <BODY> tag. Your text color & link color info will go within this first tag.

First let's focus on the text color. Here's an example of how the tag will look: <BODY TEXT="#000000"> Notice the TEXT attribute, that stands for the TEXTCOLOR We're using hexadecimal code here to get our TEXTCOLOR. In this case, our TEXTCOLOR is black (#000000) We can make it any color we want, though. However, it's a good idea to make your TEXTCOLOR contrast with the background color, so it's more readable.

Now, for those links. The first tag atribute is pretty much self-explanatory: <BODY LINK="#FF00FF">. There's also ALINK, which stands for Active LINK, and VLINK, which stands for Visited LINK.

li

Links

For starters, we need the <A></A> tags. This is where all your link info goes, URL, etc. Ok, let's focus on the <A HREF=""></A> tag. Your URL & text info will go within this tag.

First let's focus on the HREF attribute. Here's an example of how the tag will look: <A HREF="http://www.yoururl.com"> HREF lets you know that, what follows is an URL & that you're going to link to it. Now say you want your link to read, My Site!

Well, here's how we do it. Note the </A> tag that occurs at the end? This makes it so your link will read the way you want.

Here's an example:
<A HREF="http://www.domain.com">My Site!</A>

Here's how it actually looks: My Site!

Now we'll go over the target attribute. This attribute has many good uses. (In use with frames, for example) You can use this attribute to open a new browser window, or to break your site out of Frames. First, I'll show how to open a new window for your link: <A HREF="http://www.yoururl.com" TARGET="_blank">My Site!</A> This opens a new window when you click on the link.

Here's how it works: My Site!

Now for a frame breaking link. Here's an example: <A HREF="http://www.yoururl.com" TARGET="_top">My Site!</A> This opens the new page "on top" of the old page, thereby breaking the page out of any Frames. Cool, Huh!

Here's how this one works: My Site!

I hope this helps!

li

Images & Image Links

Let's start w/a basic image tag: <IMG SRC="image.gif" ALT="text" WIDTH="specified in pixels" HEIGHT="ditto">.

Now, let's break down these attributes, one by one.

SRC-This is the source/url of your image file.

ALT-This is text that will be seen when you mouse over the image. Also, if some of your viewers have a TEXT ONLY Browser, they'll be able to see the text you wrote. So, it's probably a good idea to be somewhat descriptive.

WIDTH/HEIGHT (specified in pixels)-By specifying the width & height of your image, the browser makes it load faster, which makes, happy visitors! If you don't know the pixel width & height of your image, you can find out by using an Image Editor/Maker. For the sake of explanation, I'll use Photoshop. Click on the Image menu, then click Image Size. When the Image Size dialog box comes up, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING! Just take note of the height & width, write them down if you need to.

Now, let's make Image Links

To begin, we need a basic link. If you dont know how to make a link, please refer to the links tutorial. Now here's our link: <A HREF="page.html"></A>.

Instead of putting text between the <A></A> tags like we would normally do, we put an image tag. If you'd like, you can refer back to that tutorial.

Here's how it'll look:
<A HREF="page.html"><IMG SRC="image.gif" WIDTH="specifiedinpixels" HEIGHT="ditto" ALT="description" BORDER="0"></A>

That's It, I hope this has been helpful!
