The Chicks performed at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last week; they sang the National Anthem.

As you may recall, they used to be known as the “Dixie Chicks.” But they dropped the adjective in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd, recognizing that the term had associations with the Confederacy and connotations of racism.

One can imagine that they lost some sales as a result of that.

But one knows that in 2003 the group lost sales and fan support when lead singer Natalie Maines said during a concert in London, “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.” She was referring to George W. Bush. She said that in relation to the impending war in Iraq. Nine days after she made the statement, the invasion occurred.

New Spring Silver: It’s Imperative

Video: Spring Silver – “It’s Imperative”

From Don’t You Think It’s Strange?, out now.

I don’t know anything about this artist but I somehow stumbled across this song and it’s too great to keep it to myself. Their little bandcamp bio says they’re from Silver Spring, Maryland and that the album was “written, performed, produced, and mixed by K Nkanza.” Well alright. What more do you need to know? They also offer thanks “to Mom for letting me record at her house.” It’s nice to see kids be grateful to their parents!

I see you all
Etched in the vertical tiles of an office building
I see you all
Trapped in the virtual squares of an application.

Sounds like somebody’s sick of zoom meetings!

Is Music in Jeopardy?

On February 16, 2011, IBM’s Watson DeepQA computer won Jeopardy!, beating trivia maven Brad Rutter and current Jeopardy! host and no slouch when it comes to knowing things that it is strange that things that aren’t databases know, Ken Jennings.

According to IBM, to get the computer to where it needed to be the company assigned more than 24 scientists, engineers and programmers, including a guy who’d won $10,000 on Jeopardy!

IBM: “It took the team five years to prefect the question-answering system.”

And the system “was a room-size computer consisting of 10 racks holding 90 servers, with a total of 2,880 processor cores.”

Rutter and Jennings? Just a couple of guys.

The idea for developing the system followed IBM’s Deep Blue computer defeating chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997—although it should be noted that when the two first faced off in 1996 Kasparov beat the computer, 4-2.

And similarly, Watson didn’t win from the start, either.

There were two matches over three days.

In the first match, the clue for the question to be created for “Final Jeopardy” in the category “U.S.

Missing folate genes and AIDS - treat hypomethylation with nutrients, not toxic drugs!

This is another installment of research into the biochemistry of HIV and Aids by Cal Crilly, an Australian who finds himself fascinated with the intricacies of biology. Crilly analyzes the seemingly unconnected studies that show the biochemical changes that accompany the presence of numerous retroviruses - one of them called HIV - in humans. The mechanism that makes retroviruses appear is hypomethylation, and it is the same mechanism that accompanies pregnancy and inflammation. Those retroviruses are produced in the course of normal biological activity and they are not infectious. There are many different types (ever heard of HIV 'mutating'?). As an aside, we declare pregnant mothers to be "HIV positive" as pregnancy causes the presence of retroviruses in the course of normal biological activity, and those harmless endogenous retroviruses react with what's generally called an "HIV" test. Certain basic nutrients - Selenium, Folate, B12, B6, Choline are the most important - counteract hypomethylation of the cells and thereby calm the production of human endogenous retroviruses. The toxic Aids drug AZT causes hypermethylation but it is so destructive of normal cell processes that most patients die. The 'life prolonging' effect of HAART, the drug cocktail that is prescribed to Aids patients today is due to a sharp decrease in the dosage of deadly AZT in the cocktail. Cal demonstrates those facts and more with reference to studies you can find as well, if you're interested in the details. Meanwhile we continue to treat immune compromised people with drugs that further compromise the immune system and - in many cases - kill the patient. When is medicine going to start treating those people by insisting on better eating and supplementation supplying the correct nutrients? How long will it take until the toxic drugs are phased out in favor of real prevention?...

A Seed for Change - Greek film maker says we can 'grow our way out of the crisis'

Many thanks g to Cristina in Greece for her report on this - originally published on her justiceforgreece blog as A seed For Change a documentary project by Alex Ikonomidis and the declaration on seed freedom Alex Ikonomidis is a Greek film maker who lived, studied and worked in Lebanon. After returning to his native Greece and serving his time in the military, he took up his profession there and was happily going along, producing in the world of media and advertising when, suddenly, the economic crisis hit. Through the crisis, Ikonomidis recognized that when money becomes more and more scarce, it is important to be where food is grown. This brought him to embark on a documentary project. A Seed for Change is his soon-to-be-released feature length film documenting why agriculture must start with seed freedom. Chemical inputs are often toxic and are disruptive to human health and the environment. "Standardized" seeds, as imposed by the agro-chemical conglomerates through legislation pushed through in much of the civilized world, are destroying our heritage of biological diversity, created by nature and harnessed by farmers for producing our food over thousands of years....

Hi-Posi

A somewhat unusual group in the Shibuya-kei orbit in that they began as a sort of novelty, leftfield J-pop band that seemly set out to sound like  Akiko Yano (矢野 顕子) pursuing a rocksteady record.

After a few LPs, Hi-Posi (ハイポジ) settled on a gentler sound, a delightful convergence of Disney-princess orchestral balladry and twee electro-pop.

With 1995's Body Meets Sing—an unconventional translation of the Japanese title,「身体と歌だけの関係」, which loosely means "a connection of body and song"—they evolved into dreamy downtempo trip-hop, gentler and warmer than their previous efforts.

Unfortunately, as usual, much of this isn't on Spotify in the U.S. However, a nice collection of material is up, and that is worth flipping through, particularly if paired with a few of the YouTube streams.

The impression I get is one of the original members, Kenji Kondo (近藤 研二), wrote most of the songs and has always held the masters for the bulk of their 90s efforts, and while he eventually left, converting it to a solo project of vocalist Miho Moribayashi's (もりばやしみほ), he owned the masters, it's only this compilation that has its global streaming rights addressed.

Gunsmoke: The Complete Sixteenth Season

Highly Recommended

(Note: Reviews of Gunsmoke: The Sixteenth Season and Gunsmoke: The Seventeenth Season are identical. In preparing them I watched at episodes and the extras from both sets. Give me a break.)

Despite the steady decline of the DVD format, CBS/Paramount deserves a lot of credit for seeing the 20-season run of Gunsmoke (1955-1975) through all the way to the finish line. For the show's last five seasons, it appears that the label has decided to release full- rather than half-season sets, a wise decision, and they've even added a most welcome supplement.

I've been reviewing Gunsmoke sets since the First Season was released in July 2007. The program was so prolific, upwards of 40 episodes per season in its early days, it's been impossible to watch everything in broadcast order. As new sets have been released, I typically watch 7-8 representative episodes then ...Read the entire review

The Beatles: Made on Merseyside

Recommended

Back in DVD's glory days, when stores were overflowing with them, you would often have to watch out for so-called "music" discs that were actually not authorized by the artists and didn't include any music from them- instead just containing interviews of anyone remotely associated that they could find. Many of these discs were about the Beatles- in fact some of the very first budget titles out were "Alf Bicknell's Beatles Diary" and "Beatles Celebration". Today the supply of discs in stores is not as plentiful, but a few of these titles still make it out. Checking out "Made on Merseyside" I was expecting it to be that sort of disc, but I've had enough long-time interest in the Beatles that it might still be worth watching.

This focuses on the very early years of the grou...Read the entire review

Helping Others To Freedom Pt2: The Necessity Of Confession And Repentance

In this series based on David Legge's book, 'Breaking Through Barriers to Blessing', we continue exploring how we can be set free from bondages of Satan and healed from wounds of the heart. This series is for people who need set free themselves, or for those who want to be used to help others into freedom. In this second session, 'The Necessity Of Confession And Repentance', David looks at the issues of sin and how confession and repentance is a necessary step toward freedom in Christ. We need to own our ungodly behaviours. If we are going to get help ourselves or help others we've got to be real with ourselves and see sin the way God sees it. Overcoming Adversity, Part 1: Facing Facts

There is such diversity of opinion among Christians regarding suffering. This confusion often distresses people who are enduring suffering. What is the truth then? In this message David talks candidly about the importance of 'Facing Facts' and coming to terms with the inevitability of adversity in our lives. Also, he emphasises that we need to understand how God uses adversity in our lives. Many people wonder, 'How do I know if this is something from the Devil that I need to resist or is something God is wanting me to submit to?'. David practically teaches us how to discern in our suffering and how to react appropriately to adversity. This message is available now from https://www.preachtheword.com in MP3 audio format...

Overcoming Adversity, Part 2: What You Need To Know

In our second study in 'Overcoming Adversity', we learn 'What You Need To Know'. From the amazing Romans 8, David explains how God has given us the tools to overcome adversity. There is a special understanding that we have when we are 'in Christ' that causes us to triumph even in the worst afflictions. This comes from knowing who we are and what we have in Christ - knowing what is ahead of us in Christ; what God has purposed for us in Christ and how secure we are in Him. These keys to overcoming are available to all generations of believers whatever the current global challenges or personal trials we face. This is a message of encouragement that we all need in these days. This message is available now from https://www.preachtheword.com in MP3 audio format...
