Ogilvy UK Vice Chairman Rory Sutherland co-founded a behavioural science practice within the agency, which works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behaviour. At WIRED Health, Sutherland explores the psychological reasons why people do things and how perception and placebos can be used for a positive outcome. "It doesn't really matter why people do it so as long as they do," Sutherland points out. "There's a danger in activity which goes 'it's not enough for people to go and do the thing we want them to do, they have to do it for the right reason'. Sandra Wachter: Exploring fairness, privacy and advertising in an algorithmic world

Sandra Wachter is a Lawyer, Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at University of Oxford. In this video, Sandra discusses how the law can keep up with new technology. Particularly, she spoke about her recent work on targeted advertising – a big issue for tech giants including Facebook and Amazon. The law already protects against discrimination based on certain identity traits such as race or gender. But targeted advertisers claim to group people according to “affinity” – an aggregate measure of their online behaviour – not identity. Wachter believes, however, that existing concepts in the law may have something to say about discrimination by affinity. Simonyi professor and mathematician Marcus du Sautoy’s new book, The Creativity Code, explores the future of creativity and how machine learning will disrupt, enrich, and transform our understanding of what it means to be human. In this engaging video, Marcus talks about using a definition from cognitive scientist Margaret Boden, claiming that creative acts must be novel, surprising and with value. According to du Sautoy, all three of these traits were present when AlphaGo – an AI trained to play the ancient game of Go – made a particularly unique and important move against world champion Lee Sedol in the second game of their match. Terah Lyons: AI and diversity – the cultural and societal context behind artificial intelligence

Terah Lyons is the Founding Executive Director of the Partnership on AI, which was established to study and formulate best practices on AI technologies and advance the public’s understanding of AI. Prior to this, she served as Policy Advisor to the U.S. Chief Technology Officer at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) during the Obama administration. In this video, Terah shares how after the California State Senate proposed using a machine learning-based system for pre-trial detention decisions, the Partnership investigated the plan and published a report on the minimum requirements such a system would need to meet to be fit for use. The requirements held not just for the system itself, but also for the people using it: for example, judges would need to demonstrate an understanding of the algorithm’s outputs.
