Safer Internet Day 2015

Safer Internet Day (SID) is an international education and awareness-raising effort spanning more than 100 countries around the globe to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world.

Mauritius is among one of the very first countries where government has taken keen interest to protect children and youngsters on the Internet.  In this context, a Child Online Safety Action Plan was developed by the National Computer Board (NCB) and endorsed by the cabinet in 2009.  Following the aproval of the action plan, number of activities have been started on Child Online Safety since 2009 including organisation of the Safer Internet Day.

This year is the 6th edition of Safer Internet Day which will be celebrated in Mauritius. On this occasion, CERT-MU, a division of the National Computer Board is organising several activities.  The activities are as follows:

  • A half day workshop with theme "Let's create a better Internet together" in collaboration with the Ministry of Technology, Communication and Innovation and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Tertiary Education and Scientific Research.  The proposed workshop is targeted towards State and Private secondary school students to sensitise them on the impact of threats and consequences that improper use of the Internet may have on the youth.

  • Awareness sessions on “Internet Safety” will be carried out for secondary school students (State and Private) in all four school zones of the country.  These sessions will highlight issues like sexting, sextortion, cyber bullying, online predators and identity theft etc.

  • Organisation of awareness sessions on “Dangers of the Internet” for secondary school teachers (State and Private) in all four school zones during the school holidays. Trainings on the Dangers of the Internet and how to help youngsters choose a better way of socialising in the virtual world will be organised for the teachers of  secondary schools.

  • Awareness sessions for Parents, Senior Citizens and House Wives on "Secure Usage of Internet".  Parents, Grandparents and House Wives need to be aware of the dangers on the Internet and how to protect their kids online.  An awareness session will be organised to address this issue with parents, in collaboration with the PTA of secondary schools.  The Senior Citizens and House Wives sessions will take place in NCB cyber caravans and community welfare centres.

Day 1: Wisdom

The Main Hall session focused on wisdom, a word and concept used very much in everyday life. The truth is that God gives us wisdom, and He invites us to desire and search for it as we would search for treasure.

da

Day 2: Trust

In the Main Hall on Day 2 of TeenStreet, the key speakers introduced participants to the virtue of Trust. And more than that, that trust is founded on love.

da

Day 3: Influence

On Day 3 of TeenStreet there were separate meetings for girls and boys in the Main Hall. The theme of the day was 'influence', and the key verse of the day is found in Proverbs 4:23.

da

Day 4: Involved

We are meant to get involved in ministry because people need to know about His love. From a duckling to a garbage-can drum, the speakers had powerful examples of the 'why' and 'how' of this call.

da

Day 5: Power

On Day 5, we looked at 'Power.' Our words have the power to hurt and destroy as well as encourage and build up. Jesus' words give joy, life, peace, hope and purpose to those who believe Him.

da

Day 6: Focus

Day 6 was all about focus. Where is your focus–on the small things or on Jesus? Don't get distracted by the Mona Lisas in life. Turn around and look at Jesus.

Standard Immunization of Mice, Rats, and Hamsters

Mice, rats, or hamsters are immunized by giving biweekly injections of a purified antigen, cultured cells, or cDNA. For mice, if a pure, soluble protein antigen is being used and is abundant, a dose of 50–100 µg in adjuvant at each immunization is a sensible general recommendation; for rats and hamsters, a dose of 100–200 µg is sufficient. Lower doses can be used for antigens with higher immunogenicity. Adjuvants (Freund's, Ribi, Hunter's TiterMax, ImmunEasy, or Alum) should be mixed with the immunizing antigen for the first two immunizations only; Complete Freund's adjuvant is only used with the first immunization. Subsequent immunizations are performed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or normal saline, with or without Incomplete Freund's adjuvant. The choice of adjuvant is dependent on the subclass of immunoglobulin required. Over the course of the 6-wk immunization schedule, each animal usually receives a total of six injections (three subcutaneous and three intraperitoneal). Once a good titer has developed against the antigen of interest, regular boosts and bleeds are performed to collect the maximum amount of serum. For rats and hamsters, boosts should be spaced every 2–3 wk, and serum samples of 400–500 µL should be collected 10–12 d after each boost. For mice, boosts should be spaced every 2–3 wk, and serum samples of 200–300 µL should be collected 10–12 d after each boost.

Labeling Antibodies Using Colloidal Gold

Colloidal gold–antibody conjugates are easy to prepare and are an excellent choice for microscopic applications. Colloidal gold is an aqueous suspension of nanometer-sized particles of gold. Typically, chloroauric acid, HAuCl4, is reduced with dilute solutions of sodium citrate, as described here. This will cause the gold to form small aggregates that will associate with proteins. Gold particles of specific sizes can be isolated and differentiated microscopically, allowing these particles to be used for multiple-label experiments. Colloidal gold-labeled antibodies are widely used in electron microscopy (EM), and can be used for light microscopy but require additional steps (silver enhancement).
