CNN on Trump's victory: A U-turn on US climate policy could be disastrous for the planet, as it raises the risk of emulation. When America does something on the world stage, at least some countries tend to follow. “Paris is one of those agreements where you need a critical mass of economic powers and emitters, past and present, to actually be able to address this challenge,” said Oli Brown, an associate fellow at the London-based think tank Chatham House. ... 

“And it will allow big emitters to not take the kind of ambitious action that’s needed, because they don’t want to be at a competitive disadvantage to the US, if the US is unburdened by any sense of collective responsibility,” he told CNN. ... 

But the real sting is, that as the world’s biggest economy, the US has more power than any other country to fund climate change action in the developing world. Even if it stays in the Paris Agreement, an “America First” Trump administration is unlikely to be more generous with grants and loans for other countries’ green transition. That alone sets the talks up for failure — their main aim was to agree to a transfer $1 trillion a year from wealthy countries and institutions to help developing nations build clean energy systems and to adapt to worsening extreme weather, like heat waves, floods, drought, storms and wildfires.

Ha sido profesor de Sovietología de la Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina “Santa María de los Buenos Aires” (cursos especiales); profesor de la cátedra de Seguridad y Defensa de la Universidad Provincial de Mar del Plata y de la cátedra de Intereses Nacionales de la misma Universidad y dictó un curso sobre Inteligencia Estratégica en la Universidad Nacional del Sur (Bahía Blanca). Fue Asesor de la Dirección de la Escuela Nacional de Guerra (hoy Escuela de Defensa Nacional, dependiente entonces del Estado Mayor Conjunto y luego de la Junta de Comandantes en Jefe) y de los Departamentos de Político-Social y Estrategia, así como profesor de Estrategia Política, durante los años 1962 a 1972. La razón de ese cambio es trágica: en 1983, abandonó sus actividades como traficante al darse cuenta de que su hijo había caído en las garras de la cocaína. Se alistó en las filas de la agencia norteamericana especializada en la lucha contra el narcotráfico (DEA —Drug Enforcement Administration—) y dedicó todo su empeño a acabar con el negocio criminal que él mismo había practicado en otro tiempo.
Oficialmente, Luis García murió de un infarto. Nadie ha podido demostrar lo contrario, a pesar de las muchas amenazas que había recibido. Tras su muerte nos queda Marimba, el testimonio de la vida de uno de los pocos hombres que ha sido capaz de llevar a un primer ministro al banquillo de los acusados en un juicio.

Acerca del autor
Periodista de profesión y escritor por vocación, Eliseo Bayo ha publicado centenares de reportajes y miles de artículos, en los principales diarios y revistas de información general de España. Es autor de más de 25 libros publicados de diversa temática, entre ellos la traducción del latín de las Confesiones de San Agustín. La crítica literaria destacó en su día que Eliseo Bayo fue innovador del género periodístico llamado reportaje social o antropológico. Al verse privado de pasaporte para viajar al extranjero por sus actividades políticas, se dedicó a recorrer todas las provincias españolas. Ocultando su identidad la mayoría de las veces logró infiltrarse en los más diversos ambientes. Fruto de aquellas experiencias fueron sus primeros libros: El miedo, la levadura y los muertos secuestrado por la censura franquista, Editorial Nova Terra, Barcelona, 1968; En la pendiente, Ediciones Destino, 1969 y Los trabajos duros de la mujer, traducido al ruso, Plaza y Janés, 1970. Oración de Campesinos, El manifiesto de la tierra y De qué viven y por qué no mueren los españoles, alcanzaron igualmente varias ediciones.
Profundo conocedor de las redes internacionales del poder, de los grupos oligárquicos y de las conspiraciones financieras, asiduo conferenciante sobre estos temas en la radio y en la televisión, publicó en 1985, por la editorial Plaza y Janés, su libro Descubro y acuso, sobre las corrientes desindustrializadoras y neomalthusianas, que mereció varias ediciones. En 1986, y por la misma editorial, se publicó Diez Ideas para levantar España, un informe en el que se anunciaba el fracaso de las economías socialistas.
Durante su etapa de periodista, que inició a los 19 años, en 1959, y culminó en 1983, a los 43, Eliseo Bayo dirigió varias publicaciones, formó parte del equipo fundador del Grupo Z, de cuya empresa fue coordinador general durante 5 años, y recorrió 68 países como enviado especial para cubrir los más diversos acontecimientos.
A pesar de haber sido un conocido luchador antifranquista en las duras etapas de la represión, por lo que fue condenado en Consejo de Guerra y en tribunales de excepción a largas condenas, se desinteresó de la vida política una vez muerto el Dictador. Poco después de este suceso, que tanto cambió la vida de España, Eliseo Bayo dejó el periodismo activo y se dedicó por completo a la literatura y al estudio de la Antigüedad. Recorrió durante meses las selvas amazónicas y escribió su novela El hijo del cazador. En 1976 la editorial Lumen publicó su novela Sueños, discurso y destrucción de los Inocentes. En 1978, Plaza y Janés presentó su novela Orquesta para la Libertad. En 1982, Bruguera lanzó en su Club Cinco Estrellas la novela El día de los Jueces.
En la actualidad, Eliseo Bayo reside en México dedicado al estudio de la Historia y a la traducción de lenguas antiguas.

MI COMENTARIO:
El inventor francés Thomas Roch desarrolla un nuevo tipo de explosivo con un enorme poder destructivo: el “fulgurador Roch”; lo ofrece a varios países, pero es rechazado. Destrozado por este acontecimiento, termina recluido en un sanatorio mental para ricos en Carolina del Norte, EE.UU. Aquí lo cuida el ingeniero francés Simon Hart, que también trabaja con una identidad falsa.
Al ser un sanatorio modelo, es visitado repetidamente por personas interesadas, entre ellas el conde de Artigas, que secuestra al inventor y a su cuidador. A medida que avanza la trama, los acontecimientos se muestran desde el punto de vista de Simon Hart. Primero tiene que resolver el enigma de cómo se mueve la goleta del Conde a pesar de que las velas no están izadas y el motor no está presente. La solución sólo se le aclara en el destino del viaje, la isla de Back Cup en las Bermudas, cuando lo llevan en un submarino al interior de esta isla.
El narrador en primera persona conoce la isla porque ya la ha visitado debido a los rumores de que es un volcán despertado. Allí, Hart descubre que el presunto conde es el pirata Ker Karraje. Éste eligió la isla como refugio para su pandilla y simuló la actividad volcánica mediante explosiones selectivas. El objetivo de Karraje es poseer el arma desarrollada por Roch para finalmente ser invulnerable. De hecho, parece congraciarse con el inventor, quien desarrolla para él los explosivos y cohetes que desea.
Como Hart no ve otra opción, envía un mensaje en una botella al mundo exterior con todos los hechos que ha aprendido. Después de un intento inicialmente fallido de liberación por parte de un submarino de la Armada británica, la isla es atacada por cinco buques de guerra de diferentes países. Después de hundir inicialmente uno de los barcos (el alemán), Roch finalmente reacciona ante la colocación del pabellón tricolor francés en uno de los barcos restantes y se hace volar a sí mismo y a toda la isla. Sólo sobrevive Simon Hart.
Aparecen en la obra varios temas que serían muy relevantes en la ficción de espionaje hasta nuestros días: el desarrollo de armas de destrucción masiva, el peligroso posibilismo científico, la búsqueda de información estratégica, etc. Pero hay un detalle que no se suele tomar en cuenta en las reseñas del libro: el gobierno de Estados Unidos fue el que decidió encerrar a Roch en el sanatorio Healthful-House, con la directiva de “anotar con minucioso cuidado todo lo que inconscientemente se le escapara en el curso de sus crisis”. Anticipa así Verne la captación de mentes brillantes por parte de los gobiernos de los países, una práctica central en la competencia de las potencias mundiales durante los siglos XX y XXI.

El director checoslovaco Karel Zeman dirigió Vynález zkázy en 1958, combinando actores reales con escenarios ilustrados. Participaron Lubor Tokos (Simon Hart), Arnost Navrátil (prof. Roch), Miroslav Holub (Artigas), Frantisek Slégr (capitán pirata), Václav Kyzlink (ing. Serke), Jana Zatloukalová (Jana), Frantisek Cerný (cap. Spade), Otto Simánek (Muz ve vlaku) y Václav Trégl. MI COMENTARIO:
Un verdadero clásico en la literatura de espionaje y de aventura moderna, ¡Rescaten el Titanic! fue la tercera novela del escritor Clive Cussler sobre Dirk Pitt, agente de NUMA (National Underwater & Marine Agency), pero la primera que tuvo un gran éxito a nivel mundial, y que terminó por consolidar a la serie como una de las mejores del género, que ya va por el libro nº 27, The Corsican Shadow, publicado en 2023 por Dirk Cussler, hijo de Clive y continuador de sus novelas.
El presidente de EEUU autoriza y sostiene el “Proyecto Siciliano”, un esquema ultrasecreto funcionando a espaldas del Congreso y de la opinión pública, que busca dotar a su país de la invulnerabilidad frente a un posible ataque misilístico de la URSS. Para lograr su objetivo, necesita imperiosamente de bizanio, un mineral rarísimo que sólo pudo hallarse en el Ártico ruso. Se descubre que un cargamento de bizanio pudo haber sido transportado en el Titanic, famoso barco hundido en 1912. Contrareloj, se monta una operación dirigida por Dirk Pitt para llevarlo a la superficie y arrástralo hasta el puerto de Nueva York. Sin embargo, la KGB logró infiltrar a dos espías en el contingente de rescate, que recurren incluso al asesinato para malograr la misión. Sólo la poderosa mente de Pitt puede resolver este misterio y evitar una catástrofe.
Cussler crea a un héroe sólido, hecho a sí mismo, inteligente, intuitivo, seductor, misterioso. Un lobo solitario que sabe hacer su trabajo y que quiere lo mejor para su país. La novela tiene un fuerte espíritu de restauración post-Watergate. Más allá de los fallos, hasta de los delitos del pasado reciente, Pitt encarna la necesidad de que EEUU prosiga su lucha por la libertad y contra el imperio soviético. Hay una escena muy ilustrativa: la viuda de uno de los mineros que trabajaron en la búsqueda del bizanio a principios del siglo XX es contactada por la inteligencia norteamericana para que brinde alguna pista sobre dónde puede estar. Al principio se niega. Le dicen que tiene una llamada telefónica. Después de atender, pregunta emocionada si es cierto que el que la llamó fue el presidente de EEUU para pedirle su colaboración. Cussler reflota no sólo al Titanic, sino al sentimiento patriótico que su país tenía muy dañado a finales de los 70. Lo hace apelando tanto al cultivo de las viejas tradiciones de camaradería y de esfuerzo que crearon a la gran república del Norte, así como a la tecnología militar y marina, que tiene que priorizarse, incluso sobre las preocupaciones sociales. Cussler quiere ganar porque lo cree justo, y así lo demuestra en una gran novela de acción, de misterio y de pasión.

Tras participar en la guerra de Corea, finalizó sus estudios de Comunicación. Fue profesor de cine en la Universidad de Texas, y vivió en el País Vasco Francés. Se especializó en el género de espionaje. Ha vendido millones de libros en todo el mundo y su obra ha sido traducida a catorce idiomas.
 
MI COMENTARIO:
Nicholai Alexandrovich Hel tiene todo para ser una rareza, una anomalía en el mundo. Nacido de una aristócrata rusa habitante de Shanghai, dedicada a la prostitución de alto nivel, y de un fugaz amante alemán, Hel se cría en ambiente que fomenta su aislamiento, sus arrebatos místicos y su odio a la vulgaridad del mundo, a la “mentalidad do comerciante”, como él dice. Tomada la ciudad por las tropas japonesas, el niño se amiga con el general Kishikawa Takashi, que se convierte en una figura central de su vida, al introducirlo al juego del Gõ y a la filosofía del shibumi. Como le explica el general en una de sus charlas:
“Como sabes, shibumi tiene que ver con un gran refinamiento fundamental bajo una apariencia corriente. Es un concepto tan correcto que no tiene que ser audaz; tan sutil, que no tiene que ser bonito; tan verdadero, que no tiene que ser real. Shibumi es comprensión más que conocimiento. Silencio elocuente. En el comportamiento, es modestia sin recato. En el arte, en donde el espíritu de shibumi toma la forma de sabi, es elegante simplicidad, brevedad articulada. En la filosofía, en la que el shibumi emerge como wabi, es un sosiego espiritual que no es pasivo; es el ser sin la angustia de la conversión. Y hablando de la personalidad de un hombre es... ¿cómo podría explicarse? ¿Autoridad sin dominio? Algo parecido.”
 Al final de la guerra y tras la muerte de su madre, Hel se va a vivir a Japón, donde profundiza en sus dotes, y conoce el amor. Trabaja para las fuerzas norteamericanas de ocupación en la sección de encriptación. Logra ubicar a Kishikawa, quien se encuentra detenido por los rusos; en una entrevista en la prisión y a pedido del general, Hel lo mata para preservar su honor. Tras este incidente es detenido, cruelmente interrogado y encerrado durante tres años. Consigue salir gracias a que la CIA determina que es el hombre adecuado para encarar misiones secretas de alta peligrosidad en el Extremo Oriente. Es así que Hel termina trabajando para sus torturadores, sin dejar de desarrollar un profundo rechazo hacia la cultura de EE.UU.
Encontramos entonces al protagonista, ya retirado, viviendo en un castillo que compró en el País Vasco francés. Vive aislado, sólo con la compañía de algunos amigos de la región, y de Hana, una atractiva consorte traída de Asia. Se dedica a la espeleología, disciplina que aprendió en su estadía en Japón. Su tranquilidad es interrumpida por la llegada de Hanna Stern, sobreviviente de una célula terrorista que se dedicaba a perseguir a los integrantes de Septiembre Negro, grupo que atentó contra la delegación israelí en los Juegos Olímpicos de Munich. Su vida corre peligro, los custodios de los grandes intereses mundiales ponen sus ojos en ella y en Hel para impedir que sus movimientos los perjudiquen.
Trevanian cuenta su historia en dos niveles: la vida pasada y presente de Hel, y las actividades de la que él llama la “Organización Madre”, un ente clandestino y poderoso, que maneja los hilos de los gobiernos y los servicios secretos, velando por el bienestar y los dividendos de los verdaderos dueños del mundo: las empresas del sector energético. Hel es capaz de enfrentarse a sus sicarios porque es el mejor asesino profesional del mundo, porque tiene el mejor sentido de proximidad que existe y por la información que maneja gracias a sus contactos. Sin embargo, esta vez le será difícil, muy difícil sobrevivir.
La novela tiene sus altas y bajas. La narración de los primeros años de Nicholai, su estadía en Japón, su vida en el castillo, la fallida protección que le da a Hanna Stern, son lo mejor de la historia. Sin embargo, creo que la descripción de sus salidas espeleológicas está lejos de ser agradable para el lector, podría haberse elaborado mejor, teniendo en cuenta el desconocimiento de la mayoría de los lectores sobre esta ciencia-deporte. Los detalles de los encuentros sexuales de Hel aparecen como recatados, aunque se presume que es uno de los mejores amantes del mundo. En cambio, los amigos del protagonista son retratados de manera bizarra, como personajes singulares, excéntricos, con un carisma por momentos agobiante.
Shibumi ha quedado en la historia del género del espionaje de ficción como una de las mejores novelas sobre la vida solitaria de los asesinos profesionales, agentes de la intriga internacional que combinan dotes de intuición, inteligencia y audacia con una vida solitaria, imprevisible, donde el final del juego inevitablemente es la prisión o la muerte violenta. El año pasado, el escritor Don Winslow ha escrito una precuela llamada Satori, donde relata la primera misión como asesino de Nicholai Hel, que en Shibumi simplemente es mencionada.

Morris West
 
Morris West nació en Melbourne, Australia, en 1916, siendo el mayor de seis hermanos. Al terminar sus estudios secundarios, entró a la Orden de los Hermanos Maristas y pasó ocho años como religioso y profesor. En 1941, antes de hacer sus votos finales, abandonó la Orden. Se alistó en el ejército y combatió en el Pacífico. Después de trabajar como publicista y productor de radio, comenzó su carrera de novelista.
Su primer éxito internacional fue Hijos del sol, al que siguió una sucesión de best-sellers mundiales, unos veinticuatro en total, cuyos títulos más prominentes son Las sandalias del pescador, El abogado del diablo y Los bufones de Dios.
Morris West ha recibido numerosos premios por su obra, y también ha sido condecorado por su gobierno con la Orden de Australia por sus servicios a la literatura y a la vida cultural.
 
MI COMENTARIO:
El Papa León XIV encabezó una revolución conservadora dentro de la Iglesia Católica. Pero cuando se recupera de una operación de doble bypass cardíaco, experimenta un cambio filosófico y comienza a ver el mundo desde una nueva perspectiva. Paulatinamente llega a la conclusión de que debe desandar su camino y modificar la Doctrina de la Fe para volverla más humana. Paralelamente, el Mossad descubre un plan para asesinarlo en la clínica de la operación, perpetrado por la célula italiana de la “Espada del Islam”, grupo extremista iraní. La operación de asesinato falla, gracias a un topo que tienen los israelíes en dicha célula. El mismo es identificado y ejecutado por su jefe. La planificación de un nuevo atentado es derivada a un grupo de sicarios coreanos y japoneses (?). Cuando el Papa de dispone a proclamar un nuevo tiempo en la Iglesia, cae muerto de un balazo en el corazón.
Nunca quedan en claro los objetivos precisos que buscan los islamistas con el asesinato del Sumo Pontífice, lo que le da a esta línea de la trama una presencia algo forzada, como si el autor necesitara un gancho para atraer la atención del lector a las discusiones filosóficas y teológicas que se producen entre los protagonistas. Impresiona que el disparo mortal brinde una clausura nihilista a la novela y a los intentos de mejorar la relación entre lo sagrado y las necesidades de las personas corrientes, lo que le da un sabor setentista a esta obra de principios de los '90. Quizás West estuviera perdiendo la esperanza en esos años; sin embargo, eso le permitió tener una curiosa presciencia sobre la creciente dicotomía a la que se verían enfrentados Juan Pablo II en sus últimos años, Benedicto XVI y el actual Papa Francisco: la necesidad de mantener la tradición en un mundo urgido por otras preocupaciones.
También es sumamente llamativa la participación del Mossad, previniendo y protegiendo al Papa de la Espada del Islam. Parece que West sabía cosas del mundo del espionaje que sólo podía contar en una historia de ficción...

SPY VIBE RADIO: RICHARD DIAMOND

My new episode of Cocktail Nation radio is up! Apologies for the late announcement. Earlier this month my segment featured an intro to the 1950s detective series, Richard Diamond, Private Detective, which starred David Jansen (and Mary Tyler Moore as his leggy answering service operator). The character was created by Blake Edwards (Peter Gunn, Mr. Lucky, Pink Panther) and first saw life as a radio series for Dick Powell. The television adaptation began in 1957, and like the cultural shift happening at the time, the style of the show moved from the noir influence toward the more swanky, Hefner-inspired glamour of the later decade. Fans will remember that Peter Gunn would help move the needle even further toward the more trim Ivy League look that set the stage for Sixties crimefighters, and this series was another important link in the chain. Music for the Richard Diamond during its style-shift for seasons 3-4 was by stalwart composer and musician Pete Rugolo (I spoke too quickly in my radio segment; should be pronounced Ru-golo). Pete's other credits included The Fugitive, Thriller, The Thin Man, and numerous projects with Nat King Cole, June Christy, Stan Kenton, and the Four Freshmen. More info at Cocktail Nation.

SPY VIBE RADIO: THE AVENGERS

Every month I contribute a segment to the Cocktail Nation radio show from Australia, where I offer a brief introduction to an interesting corner of pop culture and play cuts from soundtracks. This month I decided to return to one of my top-two favorites -The Avengers- and to the world of post-war British jazz. I'm sure Spy Vibers are familiar with Laurie Johnson's theme to The Avengers TV series, which seemed to blend the Edwardian charm of John Steed with Emma Peel's mod energy, and helped to put the "swing" in Swinging London. But music from the earlier years of the series channeled a different time, when London was still buzzing to the riffs of modern jazzmen like George Webb and Trad stalwarts such as Chris Barber. Among this crowd was Johnny Dankworth, husband of Cleo Laine and leader of the first British jazz band invited to play at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1959 -incidentally, the year of Brubeck's Time Out, Ah Um by Mingus, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, and the year Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club was founded. The late Fifties and early Sixties was an interesting transition period between the back alleys of film noir and trench-coat clad detectives to the more youthful and playful world of the spy boom. John Steed actor, Patrick Macnee, quipped the initial series was "more dirty Mac than Saville Row." Dankworth's theme to The Avengers was right on course with these trends, providing a more somber atmosphere to the first cast of characters (Steed, Dr. Keel, Cathy Gale, and singer Venus Smith). Viewers in the US didn't get to see this early period of The Avengers, but genre fans in the late Fifties would have recognized the jazz vibe from programs such as Peter Gunn and Johnny Staccato. Johnny Dankworth appeared in one of my favorite films, All Night Long (1962), a jazz interpretation of Shakespeare's Macbeth, starring Patrick McGoohan (The Prisoner), Richard Attenborough (The Great Escape), Geoffrey Holder (Live and Let Die), and with appearances by Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, John Scott (The Avengers, Goldfinger, Pink Panther), and many other music talents. Dankworth also went on to score the spy movies Modesty Blaise and Fathom. Enjoy!

SPY VIBE RADIO: MWTGG

Greetings, Spy Vibers! A new school year starts again tomorrow. I'll be teaching my usual courses in filmmaking, photography, and drawing. Much of the summer was spent dealing with health stuff, but I did start a super fun dive into classic kung fu movies and comics. In addition to all the films streaming for free on Prime, I've been enjoying archival Blu-ray editions by distributors such as Arrow, Eureka, and 88 Films, plus the Marvel comic series, Master of Kung Fu (great for its run of Spy Vibe stories!). And the 4k editions of Bruce Lee's output just arrived at my doorstep, which I'm looking forward to checking out. Which all brings me to finally let Spy Vibers know about my latest episode on the Cocktail Nation radio show. Every month I contribute a short introduction to a classic film or show and play cuts from the score. Immersed as I've been in kung fu, I decided to dedicate my August segment to Roger Moore's second outing as James Bond in The Man with the Golden Gun. As I mention in the show, it's not going to be the top of anyone's best-of 007 list, but I think the film has some wonderful elements hiding underneath the cheap laughs and sometimes TV-movie appearance. First and foremost, Christopher Lee always makes a fantastic villain (he was also Ian Fleming's cousin!). And I think the film presents well overall during the scenes set in Asian locations. For younger readers, it's important to know that MWTGG was clearly tapping the kung fu craze sweeping the globe at the time. And landing within five months of Bruce Lee's death, it would be just one project in a tidal wave of martial arts media such as Bruceploitation films, kung fu comics and magazines, novelty songs, TV shows, and films making the rounds of grindhouse theaters everywhere. MWTGG isn't a great film, but I do think, within the context, it's a light-hearted and fun nod to what was happening at the time. More than that, John Barry's score for the movie has always been a favorite. With its mix of trad jazz and Asian nuances, I've always enjoyed the record for its mysterious and romantic atmosphere. You can check out my brief intro and hear a track over at Cocktail Nation. Lastly, I also want to note the sad passing this week of two Sixties artists, Alain Delon (le Samourai) and Peggy Moffitt (Blow Up, Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?). They were two of the most iconic and stylish faces of the period and inspired generations.

SPY VIBE RADIO: ENTER THE DRAGON

Greetings, Spy Vibers! It's been a busy season for me teaching filmmaking, photography, and drawing once again. My latest episode on the Cocktail Nation radio show went live at the beginning of the month and I'm finally adding a post here so Spy Vibers can check it out. Every month I contribute a short introduction to a classic film or show and play cuts from the score. Immersed as I've been lately in kung fu movies, I devoted August to Roger Moore's second outing as James Bond in The Man with the Golden Gun. And when September came around it was natural to then turn my attention to that greatest icon of the martial arts world, Bruce Lee! Lee was born in San Francisco in 1940 and raised in Hong Kong. A child actor, student of Wing Chun master Ip Man, and a scrappy fighter with a talent for getting into trouble, Lee went to the States at nineteen to study and straighten out his life. With a dream of creating a national chain of kung fu schools, Lee was active in public demonstrations of martial arts, which eventually caught the attention of Hollywood. Producer William Dozier had plans to make a James Bond-style television series loosely based on Charlie Chan, called Number One Son, and Lee was lined up as the star. But as we now know, Dozier's Batman became the priority and Lee found himself in development hell. Number One Son fell through, but Green Hornet was in! Although not a great starring role -Lee's "Kato" was essentially a traditional Hollywood house-boy role with added action scenes- but his charisma on screen was inescapable. The series only lasted a season. By the early 1970s Lee was once again back in Hong Kong and building what would be his great, albeit brief, career in major action films. My focus for the radio show was Enter the Dragon, Lee's last completed film, which mixed his blinding-speed abilities with a story about a British intelligence mission to thwart an evil mastermind with an island lair. Sadly, Lee passed away just shortly before the film's debut; actor George Lazenby (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) was waiting to meet him at a restaurant to discuss their new project, but Lee never arrived. During his US career, Lee taught stars such as James Coburn (Our Man Flint) and he worked as an action coach for various projects, including the Matt Helm spy flick, The Wrecking Crew. Apparently he also liked to work out to the music from TV's Mission: Impossible, so it was a cool bonus that Enter the Dragon was scored by Lalo Schifrin. It's out of print, but I recommend volume #2 of the Epic Collection (see below). You'll love it! By sheer coincidence, just this morning, the city of Oakland officially renamed a street Bruce Lee Way to commemorate an early martial arts school he founded there. Spy Vibers visiting the Bay Area can also check out a cool Bruce Lee exhibit at the Chinese Historical Society. Great to see his legacy celebrated!

PRISONER-SCARLET ANNIVERSARY

It was on this day in 1967 that two groundbreaking programs made their debut: Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner and Gerry Anderson's Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. If mystery/adventure of the mid-1960s captured the youthful and optimistic energy of the jet-setters, these two programs marked a growing sense of consequences and uncertainty for agents during the later part of the decade.

McGoohan's Danger Man had been on the air since September, 1960. His stories often exposed the darker side of espionage: moral sacrifices deemed necessary to protect the common good. His John Drake, though slightly insubordinate, presented the image of a man who could recognize -but look beyond- the distasteful consequences of the job in order to carry out his duties. His critique rose to a boiling point in a number of episodes (Yesterday's Enemies, To Our Best Friend) and the theme ultimately was channeled into his next project, The Prisoner (1967-1968). McGoohan's character in The Prisoner, now an unnamed spy, has resigned as a matter of principle and finds himself kidnapped to a remote village, where he undergoes constant psychological torture to determine why he resigned and whether he will spill his secrets. Capturing a counter-culture-era mistrust of authority, he never discovers if his torturers are the enemy after his secrets or his own people testing his loyalty (or indeed, his own mind). Known as Number 6 in the Village, McGoohan's character epitomized the theme of individual freedom, liberty, and rebellion against a surveillance state and conformity. There was a 2010 mini-series based on The Prisoner, starring Ian McKellen. Although it didn't measure up to the original, the show did a good job bringing the "Village" concept up to date in the form of complacent, consumeristic communities we see developing around trends in globalization. Even in my area, I note the trend to build large apartment complexes above retail streets, for example.

Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation programs, high-octane Sci-Spy adventures, had appealed to kids throughout the early 1960s. After establishing himself with inventive programs like Supercar, Fireball XL5, and Stingray, Anderson and his team found international success with Thunderbirds (1965-1966). The show featured their familiar cocktail of futuristic gadgets and intrigue, while the blockbuster stories focused on a secret organization of international rescuers keeping the world safe. But as Anderson and his wife, Sylvia, moved into the later part of the decade, they shifted toward the darker sides of human nature and the theme of consequences, echoing conversations around the Vietnam War and Cold War. 

The next project would be Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (1967-1968), which began with a story about a team of space explorers discovering a mysterious city of energy. In a rash act of misunderstanding, the explorers mistake an innocent Mysteron gadget as a weapon and obliterate the city from the planet. As it turns out, however, the aliens can re-create any matter that has been destroyed. Neat trick, and essential to the show's premise. The city magically returns and the Mysterons vow to take revenge on humanity for its cruel, aggressive nature. The program was a much more violent affair. The hero of the piece, Captain Scarlet, began the series as an alien-constructed double agent assigned to assassinate the world's president. There was even a devastating suicide-bomber scene in the pilot and the series is packed with violent killings and ominous plots to destroy the earthmen. Once Scarlet was killed, however, he was able to regenerate and escape alien control. This established the arc of each episode, where the hero ultimately experiences a brutal death followed by a resurrection. His colleague, Captain Black, remained a rogue killer-agent for the enemy. Children's programming? Dark times indeed! Style fans take note: the costumes in the series were inspired by Pierre Cardins' space fashions! 

If these two programs illustrated transitions in the popular imagination, the trend seemed to take an odd turn by the following year. In a visit to the 1968 Exhibit in Oakland some years back, I was struck by the odd juxtaposition of truly violent historical experiences in the news, public anxiety and protest, and the strange effort of American mainstream TV, in contrast to these UK shows discussed above, to create a lulling oasis with shows like Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, and I Dream of Jeanie. Independent filmmakers had more liberty to present subversive material, creating films such as Easy Rider, The Monkees Head, and Night of the Living Dead. In the UK, The Prisoner and Captain Scarlet illustrated a culture trying to cope with the circumstances of the times within a mainstream medium. Whether it was questioning freedom and individuality, or consequences and culpability, these programs stand the test of time because they weren't afraid to ask questions and to frame them in ways that evoked excitement, sparkled with cutting-edge playful fashion and design, and explored real empathy. Spy Vibe wishes a very Happy 57th anniversary to The Prisoner and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. MOONRAKER OVERVIEW

New Video: The Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader channel on Youtube has posted a wonderful overview of the James Bond story, Moonraker, covering everything from Fleming's original story and the comic and film adaptations to the many published editions and graphic designs we've seen over the years. It's super in-depth and fun! Watch here on Youtube. Moonraker is one of the Fleming novels I go back to most and I even own a few original comic strips by John McLusky from the famous car chase scene in the story. And despite its silly humor, I even find myself rewatching the Roger Moore film every few years (I think I was the perfect age for it when it came out!). Another version I've enjoyed a lot is the audiobook edition by actor Bill Nighy, which was released in a great box set of Fleming audiobooks read by prominent actors. The set was out of print for a long time, but it looks like you can get individual CDs or audio files on Amazon (Moonraker here). Below: Richie Fahey's pulp-styled cover design from 2002.
