Many scholars believe that the Roman Climate Optimum (RCO) was central to the expansion of the Roman Empire. Similarly, some think climatic trends in the centuries after the RCO were in large part responsible for the Roman Empire’s decline and disintegration. This lecture seeks to nuance these differences in climate and society to highlight why broad climatic phases cannot by themselves be used as societal determinants.

Sarah Agarwal is a consultant Project Manager, specialising in user-centred Web and application development. She has worked for the Institute for Learning and Research Technology at the University of Bristol since 2002. During that time, she's worked on a variety of internal and external development projects, using user-centred design techniques with particular effect in politically difficult and organisationally complex developments. Sarah has previously worked in the field of intranets, knowledge management, usability and information science for other not-for-profit organisations, such as the BBC and the Environment Agency. She has written articles and given seminars on Web-related subjects such as design, information architecture, usability, end-user surveying and change management issues. This workshop will explore data analysis and visualization from a data feminist perspective, exploring methods for critical making and physicalization through arts and crafts. Data physicalizations create tangible, embodied representations of data, engaging both creators and audiences in the labor behind the data, its contents, and presentation.

Participants of all experience levels with data analysis, visualization, and craft are welcome to join this interactive workshop and discussion where we will examine datasets from a data feminist framework before exploring data physicalization through weaving, felting, drawing, and more.

Please bring a laptop to the workshop. If you are a crafty person and would like to bring your own tools for experimenting (such as knitting needles, a crochet hook, embroidery), you are welcome, but we will have supplies on hand.

The Center for the Humanities at Tufts (CHAT) invites you to a special event on November 13 at noon. Professor Cathy Stanton will be sharing insights from her new book, Food Margins: Lessons from an Unlikely Grocer.

In a food industry shaped by the abundance, cheapness, and convenience that giant corporations can offer, small-­scale ventures struggle to survive, as anthropologist Cathy Stanton discovered when she joined the effort to save a small food co-­op in a former mill town in western Massachusetts. On the margins of the dominant system, Stanton found herself reckoning with its deep racial and class inequities, and learning that making real change requires a fierce commitment to community and a willingness to change herself as well.

Cathy Stanton is an interdisciplinary scholar and practitioner working at the intersection of cultural anthropology and public history. Her published work focuses largely on the uses of history, heritage, and culture in redevelopment projects, particularly in former industrial settings. Her research particularly highlights the presence and contributions of knowledge producers and cultural workers within processes of postindustrial transformation.

A UKOLN Open Forum will be held on Wednesday 14 June from 10.00-12.00, prior to the official opening of the Institutional Web Management Workshop.
