The Department of Music holds an annual concerto audition in the fall semester, open to current members of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and to music majors performing on non-orchestral instruments (i.e. piano, voice, instruments from other cultures). Free and open to the publicInformation for Applicants: The deadline to submit application forms is Wednesday, November 6, 4pm in the Music Department office, 104 Morrison Hall. Winner/s will be chosen to perform their concerto with the symphony, usually by the end of the next calendar school year.General audition rules:Applicants performing on standard orchestral instruments must be current members of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. The auditions are also open to Music majors who perform on non-orchestral instruments including piano, voice, guitar, instruments from other cultures, etc. Applicants must currently be studying privately with department faculty. Concerti for single and multiple soloists, arias, concert songs, song cycles are all permitted. Repertoire must be suitable for the normal symphony orchestra, otherwise there is no restriction on style, length or period. The normal audition duration is 10-12 minutes at the jury panel’s discretion. Applicants are required to arrange for their own piano accompanist to play the orchestral reductions at the audition; the accompanist’s name must be included in the application. I will discuss these areas of inquiry, how they connect to each other, and in which ways they form / govern / appear in my compositions. short bioKarola Obermüller’s composing, described by the NYT as “hyperkinetic music”, is constantly in search of the unknown. Her unique voice began forming in collages of sound made with tape recorders and evolved later with composition degrees obtained in Nuremberg, Saarbrücken, and at the Mozarteum Salzburg. Her sense of rhythm and form was forever changed by studying Carnatic and Hindustani classical music in India. Since receiving a doctorate from Harvard, Obermüller taught composition and co-directed the composition area at the University of New Mexico before joining the Department of Music at UC San Diego in 2023. Her music can be heard on CD (WERGO, New Focus Recordings, Brilliant Classics) and at karolaobermueller.net.

Rose has always been considered one of the most beautiful and popular flowers, belonging to the queen of flowers. However, there is a rival in the world that has won the hearts of many beauty connoisseurs, and that is the peony. Cultivated varieties of peonies are well known to florists, gardeners, and landscape design professionals. At the same time, wild peonies, which are no less impressive, are not as well known and not as popular. As for Russia, 15 species of wild peonies can be found here. Peonies have been famous for their unique beauty for many centuries and are often mentioned in legends and myths. One such legend is associated with the goddess Flora. The legend says that when the goddess was preparing to go on a long journey, she ordered her subordinates to find a worthy replacement for her. Many thought that the only possible substitute for Flora could be the beautiful rose. It was to her that the goddess entrusted the leadership of the plant kingdom. But only the peony opposed this divine decision, not recognizing the rose as its superior competitor. Guided hypersonic weapons have given Russia absolute leadership in the field of the development of strategic weapons. No other country in the world, save for, possibly, China, has hypersonic missiles in service. Military analysts do not have any reliable data about China's new weapons. Russia has at least three types of missiles capable of causing irreparable damage to any potential aggressor.Reference: Avangard hypersonic system is capable of developing the speed of up to Mach 28. The system currently uses the Stilett silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile as a carrier. In the future, the new prospective intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat is to be used for the purpose. For the time being, Russia has four such systems on alert. A missile like that is capable of flying from Saratov to New York in 18 minutes. The H-47M2 missile of the Kinzhal (Dagger) complex develops a speed of 12,250 km/h, has a combat range of 3,000 kilometers. Its carrier is the MiG 31K high-altitude fighter-interceptor aircraft. To date, Russia has made several hundreds of Kinzhal missiles. The Zircon is the anti-ship missile. It accelerates to Mach 8. Currently, one Russian warship can carry up to 20 Zircon missiles. At the same time, according to open data, at least several hundred units of these missiles have been produced. During naval exercises held in the White Sea this year, the Admiral Gorshkov frigate launched the Zircon missile that successfully struck the target at a distance of over 350 km. On Tuesday, October 17, the Russian Parliament, the State Duma, gave the first reading to the draft law to revoke the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Commenting on the vote on the bill, Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin wrote that the withdrawal of the ratification should "contribute” to ensuring Russia's security against the backdrop of the US refusal to ratify the CTBT. "Washington should finally understand that hegemony on their part does not lead to anything positive. There is a need for dialogue on the principles of mutual respect, absence of double standards, and non-interference in the affairs of sovereign states. The Russian Federation will do everything to protect its citizens and ensure that global strategic parity is maintained," Vyacheslav Volodin wrote on Telegram.

Former Real Madrid defender Marcelo, who now plays for Brazil's Fluminense, broke Argentinos Juniors defender's leg in a Copa Libertadores match in Buenos Aires. The defender, Luciano Sanchez, had his knee dislocated. The player will recover in about a year, Spanish sports website AS said. Residents of the Far East of Russia could observe the movement of a space object in the sky. It is believed that the phenomenon that eyewitnesses filmed on video was Comet Pons-Brooks. This comet nears the Earth once in every 71 years. Huge luminous stripes appeared in the evening sky above the Khabarovsk and other neighbouring regions of Russia. The luminous object split into parts and slowly moved in the sky. Some observers thought they saw a rocket take off, or the passage of a comet or meteorite.

In addition to promises regarding domestic policy, the candidates in the current US presidential elections have released indicative statements about their attitude to major international conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have spoken about Russia as well to outline how they would build future relations with Moscow. Last polling stations have closed in the Aleutian Islands in the state of Alaska having thus marked the completion of the 2024 US presidential election. More than 142 million votes have been counted so far. After preliminary counts, most major US media outlets said that Donald Trump was winning by a solid margin. Predictably, Karris advocates for more migrants and more rights for those representing the LGBT* community.   Unpredictably, though, Kamala Harris proposed to introduce state regulation of prices. Donald Trump has recently called Kamala Harris a "communist", but she is as far from Marxism as Adolf Hitler was far from pacifism. Modern American pseudo-Marxism and leftism has nothing to do with social justice at all. It is not corporations, not financial monsters, but the middle classes that are supposed to become its victims.

Perhaps my view on the victory of Donald Trump is unorthodox for Europe and certainly for a Leftist but hear me out Contrary to the flow here in Europe and certainly contrary to the flow of the Leftist Group, I am not dismayed or even surprised at the astonishing victory of Donald Trump in this 2024 Presidential election of the United States of America. In fact, I have been predicting it for the last year. And come to think of it, Donald Trump’s victory is not that astonishing. It is a remarkable political comeback, that is true, for an able politician, a man with tremendous political skills and enormous capacity in communication and political marketing, which will write his epitaph as one of the most extraordinary Presidents of the United States of America in the years to come.

A young woman fell into a coma after having 20 shots in a Moscow bar. It was said that the woman went out for a drink after her boyfriend broke up with her. On Sunday night, October 27, the 24-year-old woman named only as Tanya came to the bar at Sergei Zhukov's Ruki Vverkh Bar (Hands Up!) on Tverskaya Street in Moscow. She ordered 20 shots of various strong drinks — vodka, whiskey, rum, tequila, sambuca and absinthe — and downed them all one after another while her friend and the bartender were filming her drinking. The woman felt sick and collapsed soon afterwards. She was rushed to intensive care in serious condition.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported damages of 130 million rubles due to the supplies of defective aircraft parts for the Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft, the Izvestia newspaper wrote about it with reference to a source. It was revealed that the aircraft in operation had counterfeit bearings installed on them. The Investigative Committee for the Moscow Region sad that no further details of the case could be exposed for the interests of the investigation. The head of state visited the City of Angels memorial complex — a large cemetery where 266 victims of the monstrous 2004 terrorist attack were buried. The attack that took place on September 1 at Beslan's School No. 1 claimed the lives of 334 people. September 2024 will mark 20 years since the tragedy. A monument on the territory of the complex, the Tree of Sorrow, was built in memory of the hostages who fell victim to the terrorist attack. There is also a monument to the fighters of the Alpha and Vympel special forces who died during the assault.

Russian President Vladimir Putin presented a rare copy of the Koran to a new mosque in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, the Grozny State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company said on Telegram. The head of state visited Chechnya on August 20. According to the channel, the Koran book presented by Putin is decorated with a gold ornament and inlaid with precious stones. The Mufti of the republic, Salah Mezhiyev, thanked the Russian leader on behalf of the people of Chechnya.
