Er is een nieuwe vulkaan in Nederland ontdekt. Het gaat om een 150 miljoen jaar oude uitgedoofde vulkaan. Hij ligt 100 kilometer ten noordwesten van Texel, en is bij toeval door de Geologische Dienst Nederland gevonden. De nieuwe vulkaan is Mulciber genoemd, naar de Romeinse god van vuur en vulkanen. De diep begraven Mulciber werd herkend aan afwijkingen in de structuur van de ondergrond en het aardmagnetisch veld op die plek.

De vulkaan is de tweede van Nederland. Vijftig jaar geleden werd de eerste gevonden, in de Waddenzee. Daarnaast zijn er nog twee actieve vulkanen op Nederlands grondgebied, op de eilanden Saba en St. Eustatius. De Geologische Dienst, onderdeel van TNO, sluit niet uit dat er in de Noordzee nog meer uitgedoofde vulkanen zijn.

Mulciber werd ontdekt toen geologische gegevens van de Noordzee opnieuw werden geanalyseerd. TNO deed dit in opdracht van olie- en gasbedrijven, die op dit moment nog speuren naar aardgas in de bodem van de Noordzee.

Er zijn drie redenen waarom geconcludeerd is dat het om een vulkaan gaat, vertelt Michiel van der Meulen van de Geologische Dienst Nederland. Het eerste vermoeden ontstond door seismische gegevens.

"Door geluidsgolven de bodem in te sturen, maakt de weerkaatsing op grondlagen het mogelijk om de ondergrond in kaart te brengen. Door een nabijgelegen boring, die in de jaren 80 werd gedaan om te zoeken naar olie en gas, zijn vulkanische gesteenten gevonden. Omdat er ook nog een afwijking in het aardmagnetisch veld was, is geconcludeerd dat het hier om een vulkaan moet gaan."

Van der Meulen noemt het een spannende ontdekking. "Hoe vaak maak je nou mee in je carrière dat je een naam mag bedenken voor een vulkaan? De Noordzee en de geologische afzettingen erin lijken voor mij op het lezen van een spannend boek. Het grote verhaal denken we nu wel te kennen. Maar als je het herleest, worden personages en verhaallijnen steeds duidelijker. Deze ontdekking draagt dus bij aan de algemene kennis die er is over onze leefomgeving."

Noordzee vulkanisch gebied

De onderzoekers sluiten overigens uit dat de Mulciber opnieuw actief kan worden. "De omstandigheden die toen tot de vorming van de vulkaan leidden, zijn er eenvoudigweg niet meer."

Dat er in de Noordzee vulkanische activiteit is geweest, was al langer bekend. De vulkaan Mulciber was actief tijdens het opbreken van het supercontinent Pangea, waardoor uiteindelijk het noordelijk deel van de Atlantische Oceaan werd gevormd tussen Europa en Amerika.

Volgens Van der Meulen is het niet uniek dat er oud materiaal van een boring uit de jaren 80 bewaard is gebleven. Het Kernhuis in Zeist bevat nog gesteentemonsters van zesduizend van dit soort oude boringen in de diepe ondergrond. Een ware schat aan gegevens, zegt hij.

Grote waarde voor verduurzaming

"Als een bedrijf zo'n boring uitvoert, waarvoor een vergunning nodig is, leveren ze gegevens en monsters aan ons. Die zijn eerst geheim, maar na een paar jaar maken we de informatie openbaar. Als je al deze boringen opnieuw zou moeten doen, zou het tientallen miljarden euro's kosten."

De oude gegevens zijn van enorme waarde voor de verduurzaming van onze energievoorziening, zegt Van der Meulen, "We kunnen de gegevens die in het verleden zijn verzameld voor de olie- en gaswinning opnieuw gebruiken voor studies naar geothermie, energieopslag of CO2-opslag." Ook kan er mee worden gezocht naar aardgas in nieuwe kleinere gasvelden.

"Het energieonderzoek van TNO richt zich tegenwoordig op duurzame energiebronnen. Maar voor we hiermee in Nederland aan de behoefte kunnen voorzien, hebben we nog gas nodig. Nu de aardgaswinning in Groningen wordt afgebouwd, wordt er met name nog gas gewonnen op de Noordzee. In dat kader zijn we daar af en toe nog bij betrokken, om informatie te leveren."

In een woonwijk in Arnhem zijn vanochtend ten minste veertig vaten met chemisch afval aangetroffen. De politie vermoedt dat het gaat om drugsafval van een illegaal laboratorium.

Vaten met drugsafval worden vaker gedumpt, vooral in Brabant en Limburg, maar ook in Gelderland. Meestal gebeurt dat buiten de bebouwde kom. Maar nu lagen de vaten aan de Randweg in Arnhem, midden in een groene woonwijk ten zuiden van de Rijn.

"Dat het zo midden in een woonwijk ligt, zien we vaker. Daar maken wij ons wel zorgen over", zegt politiewoordvoerder Marèl van Steenbergen bij Omroep Gelderland.

De vaten zijn inmiddels geruimd door een gespecialiseerd bedrijf.

Derde vondst in korte tijd

Het is het derde incident met drugsafval deze week in Arnhem-Zuid en het nabijgelegen Elst. In de nacht van woensdag op donderdag werden vaten met chemisch afval gevonden in het buitengebied bij Elst.

Donderdagochtend trof de politie op de Drielsedijk een aantal tonnen en jerrycans aan. De politie onderzoekt of er een verband is tussen de drie dumpingen, meldt dagblad De Gelderlander.

Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen (Infrastructuur en Waterstaat) kijkt "serieus" naar een voorstel om het theorie-examen voor een motorrijbewijs te schrappen voor ervaren automobilisten. Zo moet het laagdrempeliger worden voor mensen om een motor aan te schaffen.

Het gaat in het plan enkel om het A1-motorrijbewijs, waarmee lichte motoren met een cilinderinhoud van maximaal 125 cc bestuurd mogen worden.

'Motor past in anderhalvemetersamenleving'

De RAI Vereniging diende als branchevereniging van auto en motor-importeurs het voorstel in. Vanwege de coronacrisis neemt de behoefte om individueel te reizen toe, zegt RAI Vereniging-voorzitter Steven van Eijck.

"En op het moment dat iedereen massaal in de auto stapt, groeit de druk op ons wegennet", stelt Van Eijck. "De motor sluit goed aan bij de wens voor meer individueel vervoer in de anderhalvemetersamenleving, zonder dat het risico op files te veel toeneemt."

De vereniging geeft verder aan dat in dertien andere Europese landen, waaronder in buurlanden Duitsland en België, de eisen voor het motorrijbewijs eerder al zijn verlaagd voor automobilisten.

De besluiten waren in die landen wel voor de coronacrisis genomen en een woordvoerder van de RAI Vereniging erkent dat importeurs gebaat zijn bij de verkoop van meer motoren. "Maar het maatschappelijk belang staat bij ons voorop", zegt hij. "Met een motor kun je snel en zuinig van A naar B en het biedt mensen meer keuzevrijheid."

Verkeersveiligheid

Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen onderstreept in haar reactie op het voorstel dat motorrijden in de praktijk om andere vaardigheden dan autorijden vraagt.

Of het niet ten koste gaat van de verkeersveiligheid als automobilisten met een motor de weg op mogen, zonder theoretisch te zijn bijgespijkerd?

"Het praktijkexamen mag niet komen te vervallen. Laat dat duidelijk zijn", benadrukt de woordvoerder van de RAI Vereniging. "Maar wij denken dat het schrappen van het theorie-examen niet ten koste gaat van de verkeersveiligheid. Ervaren automobilisten hebben die kennis al. Er valt hoogstens een administratieve last weg."

Als 2 juni de middelbare scholen in Nederland weer opengaan, gaan die er heel anders uitzien. Deze week kwamen de VO-Raad en de onderwijsbonden met een protocol over de 'anderhalvemeterschool'. Het advies: gespreid naar school, anderhalve meter afstand en een dichte kantine.

NOS Stories dook in het protocol om uit te zoeken hoe zo'n middelbare school in coronatijden er dan precies uit gaat zien. In de video hieronder zie je hoe honderdduizenden middelbare scholieren over een paar weken weer naar school gaan - en wat de leerlingen daar eigenlijk zélf van vinden.

Bij verpleeghuis De Oude Plataan in Dieren zijn bouwhekken geplaatst op anderhalve meter afstand van de gevel. Dat was nodig om ouderen te beschermen tegen het coronavirus, zegt directeur Wil Zajdenband. Het hek moet familieleden op afstand houden

Sommige mensen zochten hun ouders of grootouders via de ramen op en raakten hen aan. "Ze zoeken echt lijfelijk contact: handen vasthouden, knuffelen, spullen overhandigen", aldus Zajdenband bij Omroep Gelderland. Volgens hem is meermalen met de families in kwestie gesproken. Maar een aantal familieleden van de 52 bewoners trok zich daar niets van aan.

Het is behoorlijk inleveren

Voor alle verpleeghuizen geldt sinds 20 maart een bezoekverbod. Een kleine groep mensen zoekt in Dieren toch direct contact. "Om en nabij de vijf families", schat Zajdenband. "De richtlijn 'geen lijfelijk contact' is voor het publiek moeilijk. Het is behoorlijk inleveren voor de families. Dat snap ik. Maar zij moeten echt beseffen dat ze heel veel mensen in gevaar brengen."

De hekken staan pal voor de kamers van bewoners. De zorginstelling gaat nogmaals in gesprek met de families. Pas als die aangeven om te stoppen met hun raambezoek, worden de hekken weer weggehaald.

Overigens heeft het kabinet een versoepeling aangekondigd van het verzoekverbod in verpleeghuizen. Vanaf maandag wordt in 25 verpleeghuizen onder strikte voorwaarden maximaal één vaste bezoeker per bewoner toegestaan. Als dat goed blijkt te werken, wordt deze regeling per 25 mei uitgebreid naar meer verpleeghuizen.
