it Poaching the Poachers: How Kenya is Saving Elephants with Night Vision Tech By www.wired.com Published On :: Wed, 17 Oct 2018 04:09:30 +0000 In the last decade, Africa’s elephant population has declined by around 110,000, primarily due to poaching. The slaughter of African rhinos has also skyrocketed — 1,175 were killed in South Africa in 2015 alone, compared with 13 in 2007. Because poachers operate mostly under the cover of night, this type of crime is hard to tackle. In December 2012, Google awarded WWF a $5 million grant to tackle the poaching crisis through technology, launching the Wildlife Crime Technology Project. They have collaborated with FLIR, a thermal imaging company, to design a new infrared camera capable of detecting human movement at night, and have installed cameras around Kenya's Maasai Mara Conservancy. Since the programme started, local rangers have nabbed over 150 poachers. it How Architecture Can Make Our Experiences of Tech More Enjoyable By www.wired.com Published On :: Fri, 25 Jan 2019 08:08:39 +0000 Computation is the biggest technological change we have ever witnessed, says John Underkoffler, the CEO of Oblong Industries, because it is the absolute opposite of the world we know. it What is Article 13 and will it kill memes? | WIRED Explains By www.wired.com Published On :: Mon, 25 Mar 2019 05:24:23 +0000 The European Union Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market, to use its full name, requires the likes of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to take more responsibility for copyrighted material being shared illegally on their platforms. It's become known by its most controversial segment, called Article 13, which critics claim will have a detrimental impact on creators online. YouTube, and YouTubers, have become the most vocal opponents of the proposal. But Article 13 and the Directive on Copyright isn’t law yet. It still has to go through a series of steps before it becomes finalised as an EU directive, and it's currently stalling as European Union member states can't agree on the final wording of the Directive. To help clear things up, here’s WIRED’s guide to the EU Directive on Copyright. In this video, Sandra discusses how the law can keep up with new technology. Particularly, she spoke about her recent work on targeted advertising – a big issue for tech giants including Facebook and Amazon. The law already protects against discrimination based on certain identity traits such as race or gender. But targeted advertisers claim to group people according to “affinity” – an aggregate measure of their online behaviour – not identity. Wachter believes, however, that existing concepts in the law may have something to say about discrimination by affinity.
