Today's Thank You Note

Today, inspired by a loved-one who did it first, I'm sending a thank you note to Josh Shapiro, the Attorney General of Pennsylvania, to thank him and his team for the 1000+ page report listing 300 predator priests in Pennsylvania and detailing decades of illegal coverups and lies. This report changed my life; it was a step toward justice, validating the reality of so many people, not just in Pennsylvania. I'm sharing this thank you idea with you all, because it didn't even occur to me to write a thank you note until someone else showed me hers. Maybe you're like me. If so, you too could send a grateful red monster to the Attorney General of PA.

Here's the mailing address:

Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General
Strawberry Square
Harrisburg, PA 17120

(Oh and I got my cute thank you cards from this Etsy shop.)

Those promised adventure pics are coming very soon. Until then, be well, everyone.

In Which I Embark on My Life's Grandest Adventure ♥ ♥ A Day in Pictures

We set out very early...

and drove through the fog.

The sun rose before us.

I was wearing pretty great socks.

Our destination was Quechee, Vermont.

It was pretty foggy there too.

Oh look! It's Kevin's sister, Heather!
And something interesting in the background...

What's that guy doing?

Dude, weird basket.

Did you know that when a hot air balloon is being inflated, you can walk inside it?

In fact, it's like a stained-glass cathedral in there. (Without the patriarchy! ^_^)

Reader, I married him.

Happy siblings.

Happy married-for-ten-minutes-so-far people.

Of course, that's not all, right?

But it was still awfully foggy...

and hot air balloons aren't safe in fog...

unless they're on a tether!

We did a tethered ride, safely attached to the ground.

Afterwards, our fabulous pilot, Chris Ritland, toasted us with the balloonist's blessing...

I cut the amazing orange cake Heather had made...

And as is traditional, the married couple fed wedding cake to their hot air balloon pilot.

Of course, one thing was missing from our day. So, about two weeks later, we went back to Quechee...

On an unfoggy, perfect-weather, untethered-ride day.

And we flew.

Trees look amazing from this distance, and at this speed.

That dot in the river is the reflection of our balloon!

When I told my friend Judy Blundell about our hot air balloon elopement, she said, "Marriage is an untethered ride."

We're ready.

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Click on any picture above to embiggen. I especially recommend the panamoric shot from our flight.

Thanks to our wonderful photographer, Em Pogozelski at Pogo Photo (and her dad! ^_^), for all the elopement location pictures. We recommend her enthusiastically!

Thanks also to our hot air balloon pilot, Chris Ritland of Quechee Balloon Rides (and Tom and Diane!), who was so accommodating and made everything perfect for us. We can't recommend him highly enough. Tom took the pictures of us in the balloon on our untethered-ride day. Kevin and I took the pictures from the ride itself.

Thanks also to Karenna Maraj, our local indie jeweler who made my jade engagement ring and our wedding rings. We adore our rings and recommend her wholeheartedly too.

Thanks to you, too, for taking our adventure into your hearts, dear readers. Be well!

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Tonight We’ll Try Role-Playing a Heist

Tonight on TypeCastRPG we’ll be attempting something new. We’re going to work some game mechanics from the LEVERAGE role-playing game into our D&D 5e session to role-play a heist.

Our Goal: to free a comatose giant (one of the gods of Vaeron) from the clutches of the people who are about to purchase him at auction, and then mine his body for magical materials.

Our Resources: A couple of allies, a paltry assortment of level-appropriate magical gear, and an artifact that lets us speak to the gods…

Our Team: five 7th-level characters.
In Leverage-speak, they are:

  • HITTER (the Paladin)
  • HACKER (the Necromancer)
  • GRIFTER (the Cleric/Bard)
  • THIEF (the Rogue)
    and of course…
  • MASTERMIND (the Druid, wearing a tiara that gives her an INT score of 19)

(If we can live up to this image, it will be epic)

Join us tonight at 9pm Mountain!
Hopefully I’ll have enough brain-cycles to role-play some proper grifting AND to crank out some fun session art.

April 28, 2020: Play The Fantasy Trip Digitally!

During our FnordCon 2 virtual panels, fans of The Fantasy Trip were given a tutorial of a fan project, approved by Steve himself, that really blew us away. Jim Eisert has created a Melee mod for Tabletop Simulator on Steam that is functional and looks great. Not only that, he has made a full multi-part tutorial-video series explaining how to use the platform. This is not only a good demonstration of how to use his mod on Tabletop Simulator, it's also a detailed demo of how to play the game itself. He teaches everything – character creation, movement, hand-to-hand combat, shooting, magic – and provides full battle examples. You can find the entire playlist on Jim's YouTube channel, but he has individual videos for:

Jim is very active in the TFT community, so we expect support to be robust for this already excellent mod. Whether you're just starting out or a veteran TFT player looking to get a game going during the quarantine, check out Jim's videos and give this a shot! (And remember, Melee is now a FREE download on W23 and DTRPG.)

May 3, 2020: These Are A Few Of My Favorite Orcs

They were cast by Ral Partha in the mid- to late 70s – one has 1976 on the bottom. They are part of a batch of 15 that I painted up as my go-to bad guys for the early days of The Fantasy Trip. I probably got them at King's Hobbies, a north Austin store that is still in business! Left to right, the first three are different poses from the same army: a bowman, an axeman, and a swordsman. There also exists a spearman – maybe he is still in the box that came back from Gen Con. Returning to the photo, we have two oddballs with the same physique as the orcs: a caveman with a spear, and a skull-head zombie with a club.

I really like these little orcs. Their flat faces give them a stoic, relentless expression that's enhanced by the spike-helm with nasal. They were slain many times during the development of Melee and Wizard, but they were always game for one more try.

They were small figures when they were made. By modern standards, they're tiny. But I still love them very much; if we ever did a minis line, I'd think seriously about giving one orc clan this sort of face and gear, as an homage to the great stuff that was coming out of Ral Partha forty years ago.

If you have some of these guys that you don't want, or if you know more about their history (like, were there more than three of the orc army poses?), please let me know at sj@sjgames.com.

May 4, 2020: Illuminati Solo Rules Playtest

The Illuminati is, by design, a large interwoven web of power and influence, hidden in the shadows. Unfortunately during a pandemic, even they need to keep their web at arm's length, so what's a shadow leader to do? How about playing solo? Events Coordinator Alex Yeager has developed a beta set of solo rules to be played with Illuminati. You can check out the background and development notes in our recent Medium article

Play it, and give us some feedback! We are interested in improving it, and since this is a brand new way to play a game that's been around for decades, there's a lot to test. So check those rules out, give 'em a play, and see if you can fight the forces working behind the scenes against your own!

May 6, 2020: Want To Write A Solo Adventure?

After you've played through Death Test and Death Test 2 (available in this boxed set), you'll probably want more. And here's a great PDF release from Flying Buffalo. Created for Tunnels & Trolls, How to Write a Solo Adventure collects Flying Buffalo's various guidelines (many written back in the '80s, including a large section by Mike Stackpole).

We also direct your attention to our own writing guidelines, of course!

Fans of The Fantasy Trip want more solo adventures, so if you have a spectacular project going, we'll be happy to chat with you about it. You will need a copy of the Legacy Edition set if you plan to write for The Fantasy Trip. You will also want a copy of the Adventures hardcover if you're writing adventures, so you can see examples of what we're looking for when it comes to GM-led scenarios.

A new way for podcasters to understand and grow their audiences

Whether taking a quick walk, diving into an ambitious cooking project or driving in the car, people are listening to podcasts in more places. We redesigned Google Podcasts with this in mind, making it easier to discover and listen to podcasts wherever people are listening.

Today we’re introducing Google Podcasts Manager, a new tool to help podcasters gain insight into the evolving habits of podcast listeners so they can better understand their audiences and reach them across Google products.

With Podcasts Manager, you can make sure your show is available to millions of Google Podcasts listeners through a simple verification process. Within the tool you can access metrics to understand how engagement with your show evolves over time and see activity for recent episodes. This includes retention analytics which help you better understand where people tune in—and when they drop off—along with listening duration, minutes played and more. And you can export the data and plug it into your own analysis tools if you prefer.

Audience retention dashboard

Podcasts Manager also provides anonymized device analytics that show what percentage of your audience listens on phones, tablets, desktop computers and smart speakers. This data can help podcasters better understand and respond to changing listening behavior. For example, you might discover that the majority of your listeners access your show on a smart speaker. This might mean you add shorter form content for listening on-the-go, or develop more family-friendly options for consumption in an open space.

Device breakdown dashboard

We’ll continue to build on these features to help audio publishers grow sustainable businesses, connect with listeners and create podcasts people love.

New ways Google Duo helps make time together more special

Most of my family lives in Colombia, South America, and video calling has been a life-changing way for my dad and grandparents to watch my daughters grow up. Recently, video calls have also become the only way for my daughters to see their grandmas who live nearby. Although the physical separation has been hard for all of us, Google Duo makes it easier to let family know how much we miss them, show off our latest artwork and just act silly together like we would in person. Last month, we announced new features on Duo to help you stay connected, and today I’ll share updates that make conversations with loved ones even more special.

More fun with the family with family mode

Our new family mode lets you doodle on video calls for everyone to see and also surprise them with fun effects and masks that transform you into astronauts, cats and more. Just start a video call, tap the menu icon and then tap Family to get started. You don’t have to worry about accidental mutes or hang-ups because we’ve hidden those buttons while you’re playing together. This new family mode is available when signed into Duo with your Google account. As always, calls on Duo are end-to-end encrypted and stay private between you and your loved ones.

Add pizzazz to video calls with new effects

In addition to bringing masks and effects to our new family mode, we’re bringing them to any one-on-one video calls on Android and iOS—starting this week with a Mother’s Day effect. We’re also rolling out more effects and masks that help you express yourself, from wearing heart glasses to transforming into a flower.

Bring people together in more ways

In the coming weeks, you'll be able to make group calls with Duo on the web, starting as a preview on Chrome, alongside a new layout that lets you see more people at the same time. To make getting together easier, you’ll also be able to invite anyone with a Google account to join a group call with just a link.

We hope these features help you better connect with your nearest and dearest, and also bring a little bit of fun to your conversations.
