Lucie Mascord has a one-of-a-kind job, she fixes, repairs and conserves bad and decaying taxidermy for museums all round the world. It's a poorly understood trade, but she's convinced it has a long future. She shows us her collection of eyes, what she's working on and explains some of the misconceptions about her trade. Including, that she's a "conservator" not a "conservative".

The Natural History Museum in London has set itself the mammoth task of digitising its specimens - all 80 million of them. The museum's collection includes everything from a blue whale skeleton to Martian meteorites, making progress understandably slow. Head of Informatics Vince Smith says it would take around 1,500 years for the team to manually digitise it all, so in 2014 they decided to write software that allows them to do it in bulk. They now use six DSLR cameras to process up to 200 items at a time. WIRED went behind the scenes to meet the researchers working on the project and learn more about how they digitise the different specimens.

Whether it's Tupac, Michael Jackson or some other revered artist, dead celebrities reincarnated as holograms are big business – and, for two startups looking for fame and fortune, a source of untapped millions. The two companies, Pulse Evolution and Hologram USA, have also been locked in bitter legal wrangles due to a patent dispute, despite the fact the underlying technology is based on Pepper's Ghost, a technique from the 19th century. Since 2015 the UK government has been trying to impose restrictions on access to porn. All of the legal measures needed to do so have passed and now it is only a matter of time until changes start to happen across the web. But the idea (and the execution) is fundamentally flawed. The UK's film certification board, an organisation with a limited digital background, has been put in charge of implementing the policy and one of the main age verification systems is owned by the world's largest porn company. The result? Potentially profound and damaging implications for privacy and a deluge of data on the private habits of millions of people just waiting to be hacked. Deepfakes may seem like an internet scourge, but so-called "hyperreal" masks have fooled people in real-life and have even been used in crimes. To learn more about these masks and our ability to spot them, WIRED's Matt Simon talked with researcher Rob Jenkins.

In Copenhagen, Denmark lies Amager Bakke, a unique power plant. Not only is it the world's cleanest waste-to-energy facility, it's also home to a man-made mountain called CopenHill with its own ski slope, the world's tallest climbing wall and challenging hiking trails up the building where you'll find the best views of Copenhagen. Opened in October 2019, the building was designed Bjarke Ingels Group (aka BIG) with an aim to create a building that can "contribute positively to the city, become part of the city, and even to be a landmark of the capital". The plant serves 680,000 people and takes waste from up to 300 lorries each day. Its steam turbine produces 63MWh of energy, while its heat exchangers are used in a district heating system.
