general Hammer Time By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Mon, 09 Sep 2024 13:23:50 +0000 So what do you do if you’re a musician in a world where the income can come from streaming—perhaps not a whole lot, but some is better than none—and you discover that there isn’t a sufficient amount of traction being gained and that you have to keep pumping out songs in order to algorithmically make it? What do you do if you have to build a l-o-n-g wooden fence that has plenty of planks that need to be joined with a bucket of nails? You find a hammer. This is, in effect, what a musician in North Carolina did, yet in this case the hammer took the form of AI and an army of bots. The good news for the man is that he made some $10-million over a seven-year period. Or about $1.4-million per year, with monies rolling in from Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. The bad news is that last week he was named in federal indictment for stealing royalty payments from the digital services. Among the charges are wire fraud and money laundering. Live by the algorithm. Die by the algorithm. The musician, Michael Smith, The New York Times reported, had a rather clever approach: He used AI to produce fake songs He ascribed the fake songs to fake bands He put the fakes on the streaming services He created, with some outside help, as many as 10,000 fake streaming accounts (he’d purchased a long list of email addresses) He used the fake accounts to stream the fake songs He managed to stream 661,440 songs per day He made a lot of money He now faces some serious time behind bars through the digital creation of “musicians” including Callous Post and Calvinistic Dust The whole scheme may be illegal. general Is It “Art”? By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Mon, 16 Sep 2024 12:57:10 +0000 One of the most famous paintings of Catalonian surrealist Salvador Dali is The Persistence of Memory, the work that prominently features melted clocks. Dali produced the painting when he was 26. He was to live until age 84 (d: 1989) and over his career was to produce more than 1,500 paintings with his “paranoiac-critical” method that is highly distinctive, combining the bizarre with hyper-realistic detail. (What is also somewhat bizarre is that The Salvador Dail Museum, which holds a massive amount of Dali’s work (in addition to paintings and drawings, he produced sculptures, photos, jewelry, and more), is located in St. Petersburg—not the one where The Hermitage is located, but the one where the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team plays.) The Persistence of Memory has not only gotten a tribute from such popular shows as “Doctor Who” and “The Simpsons,” but there are countless posters of it that have adorned the walls of college dorms since the late 1960s, when various popular drugs caused the perception of things that resembled what Dali rendered. (One interesting aspect of these posters is that while they are typically the common 24 x 36 inches size, The Persistence of Memory measures just 9.5 x 13 inches (which is almost the size of an album cover: 12.4 x 12.4 inches).) Dali was one of those artists who became as business-savvy as he was aesthetically capable, something of a forerunner for artists including Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst. general Bad Day at the Office By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Mon, 23 Sep 2024 13:15:54 +0000 This is never what you want to see in your inbox: Today will be a tough day, and by 9pm ET you will have heard if your job is affected. Your leaders and the People team will provide you with all the important details. We are committed to helping those impacted through this with the utmost respect, and supporting them with a runway during the transition. To break that down: It will be a “tough day” for the recipients. While there is something to be said for a time certain (“by 9pm ET”), it is also a potential axe hanging oh-so precariously over one’s head, with the rope fraying strand-by-strand. Any organization that calls HR “the People team” wants to make it seem as though one would never receive an emailed message of this nature. What is “helping. . .with the utmost respect”? It may sound good. Does this mean there will be no judgment as “We” help pack the corrugated cardboard boxes? And “a runway during the transition” is a prime example of trying to obfuscate what will be absolutely obvious to those who will be affected. Read more at Glorious Noise... general New Lizzy McAlpine: Pushing It Down and Praying By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Tue, 24 Sep 2024 14:43:15 +0000 Video: Lizzy McAlpine – “Pushing It Down and Praying” From the deluxe Older (and Wiser), out October 4 on RCA/Sony. I got into Lizzy McAlpine this summer after reading Amanda Petrusich’s New Yorker profile. Her album Older is great and now she’s releasing an expanded version with five new songs. The “deluxe reissue six months after the original release” game is a racket, of course, but that’s the music business and you can’t really complain about getting new music, especially in these days of streaming when it’s not like anybody’s actually going out and spending $15 on a CD and then feeling like you have to go back out spend another $18 just to hear five outtakes that didn’t make the initial cut. This new song is sonically similar to the stuff on Older and its lyrics expand upon the themes of sex and guilt and longing raised in “You Forced Me To” specifically. I wonder if it was left off the original release because it was too similar? Lizzy McAlpine: web, bandcamp, amazon, apple, spotify, wiki. Read more at Glorious Noise... general Cars & Concerts By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Mon, 30 Sep 2024 13:55:28 +0000 Just prior to the pandemic I bought a new car. During the process of dealing with reams of forms—and the classic “Give me a minute and let me see what I can do for you by talking to my boss”—at some point or ten I had to provide my email address. (You sometimes hear people say, “I thought we were promised flying cars by now.” I’ll be considerably more realistic and say, “I thought we would be able to buy cars over the internet by now.” Hyundai announced last year that it was partnering with Amazon to sell cars, and there is a page on Amazon for doing that except that you can’t quite yet. “Later,” it indicates. But even when it is operative you’re not going to have an Amazon Prime driver deliver your new Kona; you will still have to go to the dealer for delivery. Which puts that whole flying car thing into perspective.) Anyway. . . As you will recall if you tried to buy a car when the pandemic was in full swing you faced not only prices that made the numbers on the window sticker look like a dream, but the availability of models, colors, trims, and other things was also something of a fantasy. general Payday By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Mon, 07 Oct 2024 13:46:48 +0000 When we see big dollar amounts, it is difficult to figure out exactly what they mean. . . . Let’s say that you and three of your pals received degrees in Whatever Studies. Immediately thereafter the four of you were presented with the opportunity to get jobs at Consolidated Acme. Now having a degree in Whatever Studies isn’t the sort of thing that opens a whole lot of doors. It is almost by definition something that could fit into a niche and leave a whole lot of room for other things to be inserted. Throughout your four years you were regularly told by family and friends—and as regards the former, constantly told—that the job opportunities were nearly nil. But you persisted. Just prior to commencement the four of you were contacted by Consolidated Acme and presented with an offer that had an unusual stipulation: Each of you would be paid $200,000 per year. But the thing is, that would never rise. Benefits would change over time, but the $200,000 would be consistent. Running some checks on Indeed, ZipRecruiter and Monster you find that the starting salary for those in the Whatever field is $60,000 and would generally take 10 years to hit $200,000. general Would You Like Fries with That? By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Mon, 14 Oct 2024 16:55:06 +0000 Once McDonald’s fries were something that plenty of people enjoyed, even if they were a bit dubious about the hamburgers, to say nothing of the McRib (if there ever was an item on the franchise’s menu that the term “mystery meat” could apply to, that’s the one), which apparently will soon be coming back to an Arches outlet near you. But last week Lamb Weston, the largest french fry producer in the U.S., announced it has closed a plant in Washington state because people are opting for small fries, not medium or large. According to McDonald’s: “Everyone wants to know why McDonald’s French Fries taste so good—it’s a simple answer. McDonald’s World Famous Fries® are made with premium potatoes such as the Russet Burbank and the Shepody. With 0g of trans fat per labeled serving, these epic fries are crispy and golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside.” Evidently the notation about the lack of trans fats isn’t enough to convince people that the 480 calories of a large order is something they want to eat, premium potatoes notwithstanding. general New Tiny Jackets: My Own Dark Age By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Thu, 17 Oct 2024 16:21:43 +0000 Full disclosure–hell, this whole article is a full disclosure–Tiny Jackets is a project fronted by Kelly Simmons, who I played with in the band Daystar. Some time ago I moved from Portland back to my hometown in Michigan and while we kept Daystar alive through those years (including through the pandemic lockdown), Kelly naturally got restless and started a new project called Tiny Jackets. Now, here’s the thing: Tiny Jackets is exactly the band I would have loved to be in. They have big hooks, big harmonies, occasionally jangly guitars, and clever lyrics. That sounds like me, right? Well, Tiny Jackets has a new single out called “My Own Dark Age” and it has all of the above plus a nifty outro that would sound natural on a banger from Waxwings (another band I wish I was in!). general A Life of Art By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Mon, 28 Oct 2024 13:06:30 +0000 David Bowie was not a member of the so-called “27 Club,” which consists of Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and Amy Winehouse, all of whom died at age 27. Bowie died at 69. While the others arguably contributed to their demises—Jones, drowning; Hendrix asphyxiated on his vomit while on barbiturates; Joplin heroin overdose; Morrison heart failure thought to be a consequence of a heroin overdose; Cobain self-inflicted shotgun wound; Winehouse alcohol poisoning—Bowie didn’t die of what might be considered a “rock and roll death.” Rather, he died of a horrible disease, liver cancer. Given the additional 42 years, Bowie certainly produced more music than any those others. He released 26 studio albums and nine live albums during his life. In addition, there were eight EPs, 128 singles, 46 compilation albums, and six box sets. Post-mortem there have been one studio album, 13 live albums, one soundtrack album, one compilation album, four EPs, and six box sets. During their lives, Jones played on eight Stones albums; Hendrix released three studio albums and one live; Joplin four albums; Morrison six; Cobain three studio albums; Winehouse two studio albums, two live albums and a compilation album.* So those six artists produced a combined total 30 albums during their short lives, or fewer than that Bowie produced during his life (35, just taking the studio and live albums into account).** /// The Victoria & Albert Museum in London had its start as the Museum of Manufactures in 1852. general Absence of Attentiveness By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Mon, 04 Nov 2024 14:03:46 +0000 From 1989 to 1994 there was a show with a prescient title and approach, a show that gave rise to people including Jon Stewart and Marc Maron: “Short Attention Span Theater.” It presented bits and clips, standup and skits. Quick takes in keeping with the short attention spans that were existing then and arguably shrinking even more so now. Market research firm MIDiA has recently conducted its annual survey of independent labels and distributors to create what it describes as “the definitive view of the independent music economy.” Modesty notwithstanding, it has sliced, diced and riced data from 5,500 companies in that space—which represents $10.6-billion of recorded music revenue—so its assessment is undoubtedly substantive, especially as it adds in financials from major labels and artist distribution platforms, thereby achieving, it claims, 93% of all recorded music revenue on a global basis. The big labels, of course, make big money. Universal Music Group reported its Q3 2024 earnings last week, which has it that for the first nine months of 2024 the company had revenues of €8,396 million, which is a 6.3% increase over the same period in 2023. Focusing just on the Recorded Music category, the revenues were €6,335 million, up 4.9% year-over-year—and last year wasn’t at all bad. Read more at Glorious Noise... general Political Mood 2024: None More Black By gloriousnoise.com Published On :: Wed, 06 Nov 2024 18:52:06 +0000 POLJUNK, the National Affairs desk of Glorious Noise Here we are again. In the year of someone’s Lord 2024, we are back in time. We had a slight reprieve with four years of competent governing that resulted in record economic growth, withdrawal from historically disastrous military entanglements in the mideast (brought to you by the formerly worst president in US history), and at least some sense of normalcy, but I guess we are going back. This was after what many thought was an aberrant Trump presidency–surely that was a blip in the American experience, right? As it turns out, the aberrant is the accepted. It’s America’s true face, one we occasionally veil but never actually change. I could list all the reasons Donald Trump is a terrible person and worse “leader,” but we all know them. And that’s the point: This isn’t some unknown or misunderstood element. This is Donald Trump. We know him and unfortunately, he knows us. Better than many of us know ourselves. general Is Music in Jeopardy? According to IBM, to get the computer to where it needed to be the company assigned more than 24 scientists, engineers and programmers, including a guy who’d won $10,000 on Jeopardy! IBM: “It took the team five years to prefect the question-answering system.” And the system “was a room-size computer consisting of 10 racks holding 90 servers, with a total of 2,880 processor cores.” Rutter and Jennings? Just a couple of guys. The idea for developing the system followed IBM’s Deep Blue computer defeating chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997—although it should be noted that when the two first faced off in 1996 Kasparov beat the computer, 4-2. general Google Enters Another Market (Custom Search) By tedshelton.blogspot.com Published On :: 2006-10-24T05:29:00Z Everyone on the Internet fears the day that Google will enter their market. Today the fear was tangible for Rollyo and Swicki. The Financial Times reported that Google will launch tomorrow (Tuesday) "...a customisable search engine that users can carry on their own blogs and other websites..." and compares the new service to Rollyo. Matthew Ingram carries the photo of a shark on his post about this development. Ingram points out that when Google entered the calendar market, competitor Kiko gave up and sold themselves. He asks whether or not this was the right decision -- pointing to Paul Graham's post at the time "Google Does Not Render Resistance Futile." I find myself agreeing with Paul and Rex Hammock puts his finger on it when he writes: There’s a social networking aspect of Rollyo that probably won’t be a part of the Google product, however the Google product will likely offer publishers, including bloggers, an instant way to monetize narrow search in the Adsense program they’re already participating in.For all of the things that Google has done right in technology, they have done very little well in the category of social. It isn't too late for them to learn but if history is any guide, they will miss the importance of the social network in search as well. And frankly having a strong competitor forces you to do the two things which you most need to do in any case when you are a small business -- innovate constantly and be 500% better than your larger competition. Then Google can educate the market about why the market needs your product and then you can deliver on the market's expectations. That is what YouTube did. Full Article
