"That's not a proper sport!" Oh yeah?

A couple of lovely people I know have suggested that some of the Olympic disciplines are not “proper sports”. This sentiment is one frequently echoed by compatriots of losers, stand-up comedians and miserable bastards the World over.

It has now seeped into the social consciousness and zeitgeist to the extent that many people mistakenly think “sports” are one thing - typified by physical endurance, stamina, or skill - and “games” are things anybody can do really, probably whilst having a pint at the same time.

Let’s put to one side that “the Olympics” are actually called “the Olympic Games” (or in French, “Jeux olympiques”), and just assume the “point” of the Olympics is to promote “sporting disciplines”.

Why do I feel certain that every single one of the Olympic disciplines is worthy of the name “sport”?

Even archery, which I reckon I could have a good bash at it with the right kit despite being a perfect example of how bad Guinness can be for your waistline, or boxing which is standing around and punching people when they didn’t even borrow that DVD off you in the first place.

Yes, I’d even include dressage where the horse is the one actually doing the moving about, whilst the “competitor” sits atop in a fine hat looking more English than a teapot in a red phone box (even when the competitor is French, which must be embarrassing for them).

All of these can be - and in the context of the Olympics, most definitely are - sports.

To explain, let’s just focus on what makes something nothing more than “a game”.

Any activity can be made into a game. All you need is a way to keep score and some rules to make sure the scores actually mean something. Staring at a wall: how long for without looking away? Making a cup of tea: judges could taste-test quality, or there could be speed trials. Having a nice sit down and a biscuit: how few crumbs can be counted on your lap afterwards?

Most games are obviously a bit more involved and preferably prefer people either getting naked or putting things onto a spring-loaded donkey (or both!), but the point is I could make a game out of writing this very post if I wanted. Or even this sentence. (4 words, 0.6 seconds, 100 words/minute, if you’re interested).

“Gamification” is a major social force in the web application industry right now, to the point where sitting in your office and pressing a button in an app on your phone can make you “Mayor”, which is why I don’t use FourSquare: I might become an annoying prat who asks for a third of a Londoner’s council tax to spend on bicycles and zip lines or whatever.

Games are obviously more fun when there is a degree of competition, and therefore the scores must be fairly comparable. You and I might decide to play pooh-sticks for example, and we will have a grand old time as I crush you and claim glorious victory and then we’ll go and get an ice cream or something. The fun is in me beating you without “cheating”. Or you usurping me and claiming a surprise victory, perhaps (like that’s ever going to happen, you fool), all whilst not kicking me in the head as I sing “We are the Champions”, etc.

This is a game: any activity at which there are some established rules allowing the participants to keep score, and where the point of the rules is to make different participants scores comparable with each other.

Cheating isn’t just “naughty” - it stops it becoming a game, because the scores are no longer comparable. If I turned up to pooh-sticks with laser-guided remote-controlled precision sticks with outboard motors on them, I can’t claim a fair victory when you’ve just picked up that stick with a leaf on it next to that weird moss on that rock, no not that one, that one over there, no, there you moron… yes, the bent one!

Providing the game is fair then, I would argue that any game can become a sport. How? Other people caring about the outcome.

If whilst I am thrashing you at pooh-sticks, a small crowd appears and starts cheering one or the other of us on (hint: I’m very charismatic, they’ll be cheering for me mostly), then we have a sport. The number of people who care about the outcome or who want to have a go themselves determines how “sporting” it is. Once we start keeping World Records, or we meet regularly to do contest on a schedule we share with non-participants, and arrange ourselves into leagues, and perhaps start making money from the gullible fools who fawn in my pooh-stick abilities, then we have a moderately successful sport.

Sport is, I think, simply any game, where non-participants care about or are interested in the scores and who wins.

If the dressage, archery or boxing events at the Olympics, it’s pretty clear there were non-participants who cared about the outcome. In some cases, they really cared to the point where they flocked to Twitter, barely able to type through their blubbering tears about how wonderful and marvellous it is that somebody they’ve never met who happens to be considered by International Law to be a citizen of the same part of the World as them despite living 3,000 miles away, beat somebody who lives 300 miles away who they do not share such a close bond with due to them suffering the genetic disadvantage of being French.

So, here’s my cut-out-and-keep guide:

  1. In both games and sports, people keep score somehow
  2. In both games and sports, rules ensure the scores of different participants are fairly comparable
  3. In games only the participants care about the comparison, in sports there are non-participants who also care

If this still doesn’t make sense to you, think about what sports would become if nobody cared? Or even if the outcome wasn’t scored or measured? What exactly would those footballers be doing if nobody nobody cared about the score? What would the by doing if they didn’t bother keeping score? Just what is it that Usain Bolt would be proving by running really quickly if nobody was watching? Or some people were watching, but were not measuring how fast he was running?

So the next time you hear somebody say “that’s not a real sport”, despite there being a clear loyal following of non-participants, maybe point out that it might be an activity whose outcome they don’t care about, so that can mean it’s not a sport to them.

But to the participants and to their followers, and to the people around them, it is very much a sport. And what they’re saying is a smidge hurtful to all of them, even if it’s just pooh-sticks. So, you know, try not to say that. It makes you sound a little bit mean.

If you’re following via RSS, I’ll shout out again when the move is complete with a new feed URL.

In the meantime, any recommendations on getting some cheap infrastructure? I have a couple of ideas, but it’s so long since I last did this, I feel as though I might be out of the loop these days. Due to the nature of poor replies here, feel free to tweet me @p7r or you can find my inbox via paul with an at symbol and then this domain.

Zillow and Trulia Remain Irrelevant in Austin Real Estate Market

Both Zillow.com and Trulia.com could vanish tomorrow, completely – websites crash and stay down forever –  and it would make ZERO difference, at all, in the successful sale of any home in Austin TX, or elsewhere in the U.S. Period. There is no hardship or selling disadvantage created for sellers or their listing agents if their real estate listings do not appear on these real estate entertainment and advertising websites because it is not the purpose of these consumer portal sites to sell homes, but instead to sell advertising to Real Estate Agents. These consumer sites not only fail to cause homes to sell, the websites fail to create smarter, better educated buyers and sellers. Instead, they create consumers exposed to bad data, and too much of it. Including the ridiculous Zestimate, which everyone knows is inaccurate but which nonetheless remains the “favorite” feature of Zillow.com users, according to Zillow. ... Read more

The Crossland Team is Back at Keller Williams Realty Austin SW Market Center

And the real estate journey continues … Sylvia and I started Crossland Real Estate in Jan 1993, and remained independent until we sold our property management portfolio in 2004 and “retired” for a year. We didn’t actually formally retire … more of a sabbatical … as we were still in our 40s with kids 9 and 12. But we did take a year off from active real estate “production”. We weren’t sure whether we wanted to remain in real estate forever or not. I started a telecom services company and dabbled in Business Brokerage, both of which were interesting pursuits worthy of a full effort, and which I could have succeeded at doing, but after some time off from the daily real estate routine, something happened… The phone rang. It was Real Estate. It wanted us back. Sometimes distance from something brings perspective and a renewed appreciation of it. So, ... Read more

The Austin MLS Now Has a ‘Coming Soon’ Status

Update August 2018: The Austin Board of Realtors has Discontinued use of the Coming Soon Status. It caused more trouble that it was worth. Austin Realtors can now enter For Sale listings into the Austin Central Texas MLS before the listing is ready for showing. For up to 14 days prior to the “Active” date. And, therefore, buyer agents and buyers can get a “heads up” on listings that are (supposedly) about to come onto the market live in the MLS. What Problem Does This Solve? During Austin’s red hot seller’s market of the past 5 years, it had become increasingly frustrating for Buyer Agents and Buyers trying to operate in a low inventory market. We heard tales of buyers literally driving zig zag through neighborhoods looking for “Coming Soon” signs. Every new listing that popped up live in MLS became a Red Alert fire drill, as I wrote about ... Read more

Your Austin Real Estate Investment and Wealth Building

What effect does "negative cash flow" real estate have on the growth of your Net Worth over time?

at

The Growing Acceptance of Real Estate Value Inaccuracy

What is your Austin home worth, right now? When considering a sale, it’s generally worth “market value”, defined loosely as the highest price a buyer would pay, and that a seller will accept in an open, competitive market. This assumes neither buyer nor seller are under any undue stress or duress external to the transaction itself. Many homeowners want to know their home value even when not considering a sale. Such as when protesting assessed property value at Travis County. Or maybe you are just curious, or you want to update your Net Worth spreadsheet with a current value. If you don’t want the “market” to determine your home value, because you don’t want to sell, there now exists a plethora of “Automated Valuation Model” (AVM) tools that will tell you the supposed value of your home online based on mathematical algorithms and data. The most well know is perhaps ... Read more

Austin Real Estate Market Update Aug 2018

The Austin real estate market has begun to level off and slow down a bit, but that fact is not yet fully reflected in the market statistics, other than Days on Market creeping up. Nevertheless, Median Sold price is up to $322K, an increase of 8% over August 2017. I see more price drops coming across the listing update feeds I follow as well, and I also see more “back on market” listings.  This softening of the Austin real estate market may more fully appear in the September through December stats as I expect Days on Market to keep rising and price increases to slow. Real Estate cycles in Texas have traditionally run 4 to 7 years. We’re in year 7 of a continuous increase in prices, which is outpacing the very strong job growth Austin has enjoyed over the same period. But prices have run away from wages. Austin ... Read more

US Administration Purchases 4.65 Million Barrels of Crude Oil for Strategic Petroleum Reserve

In July 2024, the Biden-Harris administration made a significant move to bolster the United States’ energy security by purchasing 4.65 million barrels of crude oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). This acquisition is part of a broader effort to replenish the SPR, which had been significantly drawn down in response to the global energy crisis triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) confirmed that this latest purchase brings the total amount of crude oil secured for the SPR to over 40 million barrels since the administration began its replenishment efforts. The DOE has been able to procure this oil at an average price of $77 per barrel, which is nearly $20 less per barrel than the average sales price during the emergency releases in 2022. This strategic purchasing not only ensures a good deal for American taxpayers but also maintains the operational readiness of the SPR. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s energy security while securing favorable terms for taxpayers. She noted that the DOE has successfully accelerated the return of nearly 5.5 million barrels initially slated for later in the year, further maximizing the...

Oil Prices Recover After Israel Retaliates Against Hezbollah

Oil prices saw a partial recovery on Tuesday following Israel’s military response to Hezbollah’s recent attacks. The geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have once again highlighted the region’s critical role in global energy markets, causing fluctuations in oil prices. The latest conflict began when Hezbollah launched a series of rocket attacks into northern Israel, prompting a swift and decisive retaliation from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The IDF targeted key Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, aiming to neutralize the threat and prevent further escalation. This exchange of hostilities has raised concerns about potential disruptions to oil supplies from the region, which is a significant factor in the global energy market. In response to these developments, Brent crude futures rose by 2.5%, settling at $82.30 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures increased by 2.7%, closing at $78.50 per barrel. Analysts attribute this rebound to fears of supply chain disruptions and the market’s sensitivity to geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Energy market experts have noted that while the immediate impact on oil production and supply routes remains limited, the situation underscores the vulnerability of global oil markets to regional conflicts. The Middle East accounts for a substantial...

Europe Faces Negative Power Prices Amid Renewable Energy Surge

In recent months, Europe has witnessed a surprising and significant economic event: negative power prices. This phenomenon, where electricity producers must pay consumers to take their power, has raised eyebrows across the continent. While it may seem counterintuitive, negative power prices are a direct result of the evolving energy landscape, particularly the rise of renewable energy sources. Understanding Negative Power Prices Negative power prices occur when electricity supply far exceeds demand. This situation often arises during periods of low consumption, such as weekends or holidays, combined with high levels of electricity generation. In such cases, power producers, unable to store excess energy, must pay consumers or other utilities to absorb the surplus. This is especially common in countries with a large share of renewable energy, where generation can be unpredictable. The Role of Renewable Energy Renewable energy, particularly wind and solar, has played a pivotal role in driving negative power prices. Europe has been at the forefront of the transition to green energy, with substantial investments in wind farms and solar panels. However, these energy sources are inherently variable—wind patterns fluctuate, and solar power is contingent on daylight and weather conditions. On particularly windy or sunny days, renewable energy production...

Large Oil and Gas Reserves Discovered in Pakistan’s Territorial Waters

Recently, a significant reserve of oil and gas was discovered in Pakistan’s territorial waters. This finding came after a three-year geographical survey conducted in collaboration with a friendly country. The identification of these reserves could mark an important milestone for Pakistan’s economy. The discovery was confirmed by a detailed study that mapped the exact location of the deposits. The reserves found are considered substantial and have the potential to transform Pakistan’s economy, which currently faces significant financial challenges. The exploitation of these reserves could provide a new source of revenue and reduce the country’s dependence on energy imports. Energy sector experts highlight that, although the discovery is promising, it is still in the early stages of exploration. Considerable investments in infrastructure and technology will be needed to efficiently extract and process the oil and gas. Additionally, the sustainable management of these resources will be crucial to ensure that the economic benefits are long-lasting. The Pakistani government has already been informed about the discovery and is taking steps to initiate exploration activities. The expectation is that, over time, these reserves could significantly contribute to the country’s economic growth, creating jobs and boosting industrial development.

GlobalData Report: Oil and Gas Industry Slows Energy Transition Efforts

According to the latest GlobalData report, the oil and gas industry is experiencing a slowdown in its energy transition efforts. The report highlights that despite the growing global emphasis on sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, the pace at which the oil and gas sector is adopting renewable energy and other green technologies has decelerated. This slowdown is attributed to several factors, including economic uncertainties and fluctuating oil prices. Investment Shifts and Challenges The report points out that while there has been a significant investment in renewable energy projects, the overall commitment from major oil and gas companies has not met the expected levels. Companies are facing challenges in balancing their traditional fossil fuel operations with the need to invest in cleaner energy sources. The economic pressures and the need to maintain profitability in a volatile market have led to a cautious approach towards large-scale investments in renewable energy. Ravindra Puranik, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, commented on the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on energy security. He noted that the resultant supply chain disruptions have driven countries towards readily available fossil fuels, thereby boosting oil and gas demand. Puranik also highlighted that the push for energy self-reliance and high...

Sarah Palin Resignation News Conference

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Honorable Sarah Palin will address us in her capacity as Governor of the Great State of Alaska for the last time. She has seen her last Russian plane; the last view of Russia from her kitchen; and still has the Bridge to Nowhere. The Governor now speaketh:

Palin: Hi, everyone, I love you and know you love me even though my popularity ratings have nose dived into the Bering Sea. Sad, and just when I needed more per diem, Arctic Cat jackets, PACs and legal defense funds.

Okie, dokey, the problem here is not me; never me, but the media. Our brave soldiers are fighting in Kuwait just so the media can talk about my family. Its an outrage and I am personally mind sick over it!

I know there are 15 months left in my administration since I counted them last night while reading my seven figure book contract. Wow, a hockey mom writing a book and so far I have 252 blank pages. It's a start! Just so much to say about what is needed in this country to make me richer, hire enough attorneys to stay out of jail and maintain some kind of presence.

The Media is bad. Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and the rest asked me questions I wasn't prepared for and probably never will be. It was disgusting to sit there and have to think about what publications I read or my qualifications for vice-president. I read a lot, sometimes even more and really enjoy book pictures. Told them what a VP does, but too illiterate to understand. They should be ashamed as I am.

I will continue to further my agenda which is ever changing and promote good Americanism when it happens. Good Americanism is defined as whatever gives me more power, more account money and the ability to say things that don't make sense to dumb Americans. Its that simple and now I can do it with a seven figure book deal. $150,000 in two months for clothes was a spit in the old bucket!!

The silly ethics charges still plague me and recently I failed to respond to one about my legal defense fund. You know, there are some great sales out there and THEY claim I used the money wrongfully. Now, by law, I have to appear to defend myself. Don't they know I am the Governor Emeritus and don't have to do diddly. The Great Dick Cheney is in the same boat, but he sent his daughter out to defend his lawlessness. I can't do that since mine don't know what to defend and frankly, neither do I. Its a tough world for a hockey mom out of work and no pension.

It was all these cowpie bloggers that made me decide to resign, but a new saying went in the book: pulling a Palin. I really haven't quit that much, but perhaps a lot, but in a minor sense. Frankly, I resent calls to see my notarized high school diploma. Just another media trick to humiliate my Family, but it is difficult to recall which high school I quit. I went to four colleges and must have graduated from one. As of this moment, this hockey mom is a private citizen and will campaign for just about anyone if the price is right.

I am for good old American capitalism! Capitalism and not this silly socialism Obama stands for. Socialism is defined as anything that resembles My Space, FaceBook or Twitter without a profit. Twitter carries my message, but not far enough. People, I need a platform, preferably with a seven figure salary, to convey the message of the Republican party, the Alaska Independence Movement, oops, never mind, and other options which grant me stipends, contractual endoments, et. al.

Finally, being Governor of this Great State has been a blast. Doing absolutely nothing for months while lining up deals is one of the greatest enjoyments of life. Working at home, collecting the big per diem bucks, flying the kids on the state dole, spending more time out of state promoting myself rather than assisting with Alaskans home fuel crisis and finally, convincing the Republican big wigs I am a viable candidate for higher office is stressful. Hockey moms know how to handle this and I will always keep an eye on Putin over there who poses a threat to our way of life.

Nuff said....I am out of here, got to see my lawyers, bitch about Tina Fey though she provided good publicity (SNL paid good bucks), handle some ethics problems and make sure my ex-brother-in-law has some more issues. No questions since my hair can't take it. My kids will be along soon and you can ask them. This is Sarah Palin saying you won't have me to kick around any more and neither will I.

The Media sucks...now I have said it. Folks, don't believe anything they say about me, Todd, my Family or money I allegedly took under the table. or contractors who built our house for free. I have mouths to feed, wolves to shoot from helicopters and sponsors willing to pay for my mind...not much, but enough. Remember, American Capitalism is the best in the world and I, Sarah Palin, believe in attaining as much capital as possible. I'm gone, but have to remember what high school I attended....hmmmmmmm.

Wait, one more thing!! There is a rumor out there about Todd and I divorcing. Not true since he owes me too much and my religion forbids it, I think...will have to check with witch doctor. The despicable, uncouth National Enquirer is quoting 4 people as saying I had an affair with my husband's former business partner, Brad Hanson whom Todd divorced shortly thereafter for some reason. They even claim possession of a notarized statement, but whoopy do! I don't even know what an affair is much less engage in one. Would I dare do this after my daughter had a child out of wedlock and then after that scoundrel father of her baby, Levi, went about the country saying we knew he was doing the horizontal tango with her in our own house. Nein, nadda, nix, not so.! We don't even know what goes on in our own house much less someone having sex with our daughter...geeeeesssssshhhh. Okay, no affair, honest, no affair, I was Wasilla Mayor and much too busy building the Bridge to Nowhere, our free, oops, our house, making deals and driving the city into $23 million debt. Out of here again....Bye Alaska...why no response back? Why no cheers? Damn liberals!!!

Whatever

America lost its moral compass somewhere along the line and is having difficulty finding it again. It's not the first time in our short history and unfortunately, won't be the last. Countries are created by human beings and as such grievously err towards some while others applaud. This is the nature of our condition and occasionally a check is needed on the condition of our condition.

Sadly, the Bush Administration corrupted journalistic ethics by not only paying various pundits to echo their opinions, but provided special dispensation to corporate news owners. Fairness was swept aside for volatile content, falsities, video editing out of context and overall, enough to make the hallowed likes of Chet Huntley, Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite turn over in their graves. Sensationalism has replaced journalistic integrity and racism hints have been accepted as valid comments.

Those of us who recall McCarthy and that red baiting era have been sadly reminded by current techniques and accusatory comments. Talking heads who have contributed very little to our society and less in socially redeeming value constantly belittle the basic concepts this nation was founded upon. Waves of mindless radicalism are whipped up in opposition to the most inane topics such as the President speaking to school children as "brainwashing" or "socialistic" health reform undermining this nation.
Ironically, while Americans, Iraqis and Afghans are dying, citizens are suffering from corporate run health plans and a myriad of other issues disregarded in lieu of posturing, falsities and name calling.

There is a major scandal brewing in Washington, D.C., which will impact not only the media, but the entire nation. The origins are in a deposition by a whistle blower named Sibel Edmonds whose former CIA positions gave her unlimited information sources. She has already illustrated corruption among numerous former Senators, nuclear information sales to black markets and evidence of wrongdoing in the highest levels. Commensurately, torture and other acts are still dividing the nation while religious leaders remain silent. Talking heads tout the validity of torture, downplay any hit of Republican wrongdoing and solemnly believe in pushing it all under the table.

Wake up, America!! 60,000 of us died in Vietnam along with 3,000,000 of their citizens for a mistake it took years to admit. Now, young Americans are dying again for another mistake in Iraq that Bush politicians used lies to drag us into. The likes of Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity and Coulter, among others, have not given much to this nation yet feel their message is vital to its survival. Their desire is not consensus, but increased ratings based upon inane statements and rash sensationalism. Talk of socialism or communism is not prefaced by definition, but instead hurled without regard at the President, his staff and appointees.

Its enough to make you sick....

at

They Are What They Is!!

Confusion reigns in my light deprived mind.....Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly, Bachmann, Palin, Limbaugh, Faux News, CNN and more journalistically deprived voices. There are Communists roving the country, radicals in the White House, a dark force creating socialism, Nazis about, religion promoting Marxist concepts such as social justice, Obama is Hitler, blah, blah, blah. One wonders whether the intention is to create utter confusion, obfuscate legitimate issues or simply to alienate the public completely. Then the teabaggers strike with their brand of gray areas mixing militias, racism and confusing logic with equally clouded minds and misspelled signs.

Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." -- Voltaire

Ironically, those main voices urging the susceptible masses have their own background flaws:

O'Reilly not only avoided the military draft by fleeing to England, but had to pay out $15 million to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit. He claims a working class backgrounds (father was a CPA and mother a physical therapist-hardly blue collar!), but could afford Marist College and England. Here is the actual 22 page lawsuit filing; read and see what really motivates O'Reilly as well as an interesting website devoted to his lies:

Beck.....drug and alcohol abuser for nearly two decades not only ruining himself, but his marriage as well. Paranoid ramblings not only disdain anything closely related to historical fact, but border on something Joseph Goebbels would be proud of. Beck claims college wasn’t necessary since he learns everything from reading. Check it out:

Hannity...another dilettante belonging to the Joe McCarthy school of truth abandonment. Now he and equally flawed Oliver North are being investigated by the IRS for possible misappropriation of funds from the nonprofit Freedom Concert. Hannity and North created the organization, but very little of the $10 million has gone to help the target group, deceased Veterans' families and disabled GIs. Apparently, Hannity and North enjoyed the good life while continuing to shout out their undying dedication to those injured or killed in war. Of course, Hannity's teabagger love caused his superiors to pull him from a recent gathering where he had decided to broadcast from.

Palin is someone too much has been written about. She has earned $12 million since July espousing conservative "values" which transforms into violence incitement, tax evasion, ethics charges and harassment of her former brother-in-law. Meanwhile her family "values" have been forsaken witnessed by daughter, Willow, breaking into homes with her friends, partying and then arrested by state police. Of course, that "influence" saw only the male revelry makers indicted while Willow and other women were mysteriously left out. Palin has had many family issues, but focuses instead on mediocre cable shows on Fox and the Discovery channel. Both are ratings disasters since she faked interviews with LL Cool J and Toby Keith for Fox; and was an environmental disaster for Alaska. She makes the bucks while her family fades into disenchantment devoid of societal respect for order.

Limbaugh...another draft evader, convicted drug abuser who used influence not only to avoid military service, but also serious charges for doctor shopping, money laundering, drug purchases and distribution. He mutilates the truth, throws out seditious comments and buffers himself in a sanctimonious sanctification. He needs a life in a cave where whatever goodness possessed can be rediscovered if possible. Another who desires to attain manhood, but is confused.

They are symbolic of a society gone awry; a constituency desiring simple answers to complex questions while milling in a menacing manner egged on by those who manufacture the "big lies" and labels. It would be interesting to compare the criminal records of leading Nazis, whose ideology is thrown out so much to smear, with several of these neocon airheads....

The Statue of Liberty is weeping again........

Malformation of Intellectual Capacity

That esteemed pseudo journalist, Bill O'Reilly, again expressed outrage over a judge ruling against the Defense of Marriage Act. O'Reilly, known primarily for a sexual harassment episode and draft avoidance, compared same sex marriage as "like being married to a duck."

The question to be asked is simple. Bill, what do you have against ducks? Duck eggs are tasty in baking recipes; the birds eat numerous insects and are good friends to humans. Methinks Bill has a bird fetish he is denying and will avoid as he does discussing the $15 million settlement with Andrea Macklin, the woman he sexually harassed. Obviously, O'Reilly is no fan of Donald Duck nor Daffy. Someone needs to pull Bill aside and besides checking his citizenship, request his sexual orientation. In the meantime, ducks beware.

____________________________________________________________________

Our lovable airhead, Sarah Palin, was a guest on the O'Reilly MisFactor, and Bill actually got upset with her lack of concrete answers. Palin really didn't possess any facsimile of knowledge concerning immigration, border problems, etc.; but was willing to discuss moose breeding habits along the Alaska-Canadian border. Sarah has considerable background of shopping with Republican party funds and could have filled Bulbous Bill in on many helpful points. Alas, she seemed intellectually departed and needs a recharge in her home probably built free by Bridge To NoWhere contractors. Sometimes, honor, credibility and knowledge are hard to obtain.

____________________________________________________________________

Our esteemed Arizona Guv, Jan Brewer, has made some wonderful statements befitting only the classier fear mongers. Arizona Senator Russell Pearce and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio have run fast and easy with the Arizona National Socialist Party (Nazi) attending rallies and extolling virtues. The Guv was confronted with this during a press conference and stated her father had died battling the Nazis.

Reality check: her father died in 1955; not during World War II, but its the thought that counts. Right, Jan.

Also, digging very deep to defend SB1070, the notorious immigration enforcement law, the Guv stated: a) most coming over the border were lugging drugs (mules); and later, border crossers were beheading many victims. Both were adamantly denied by the Border Patrol and even John McCain, back from a soma holiday, denied the mule fantasy. Fact is, and don't tell the Guv this, crime along the border is down considerably and JanBrew has to make up stories to justify the new Arizona law. Sighhhhhh, it becomes addictive...lets call it the Palin Syndrome....out of state Republican candidates are flocking to Brewer for endorsements, but she has to figure out where they are from first. Bring maps, candidates, and beware of the trip down to Fantasy Island...da plane, da plane, boss, da plane.

It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native criminal class except Congress which exceeds all expectations. One cannot imagine all the perks Congress possesses and would be shocked to the extent luxury replaces accountability. Personally, the idea of barracks housing for single members and government housing for married couples has an appeal. Yearly classes should be offered in ethics, the Road Kill book, interpersonal relationships, and psychological testing to detect the mentally challenged. Space, the final frontier, should not be allowed in Congress; only massive perks and pocket lining. Ask J.D. Hayworth; he knows and appreciates Abramoff as does Senator John Kyl.

News sources the media should squelch:
1. Britney Spears...still alive, dating her bodyguard, and wanting all the money

2. The Kardashians....wow, American culture has really advanced to the point where sex videos on the net makes one rich.

3. Speaking of which, Danielle Staub, the New Jersey Reality Housewife witch, has promised us her sex video will be even better. Introduce her to Bill O'Reilly's duck, pleaseeeeeeeeeee.

4. Lindsay Lohan......please, stop it. Cannot compute, Cannot Compute. Just let her go to jail, serve the time, come out, screw up, go back, come out, screw up, go back, come out, screw up. Repetitious, isn't it? Just like Lindsay's life....being accountable isn't a movie, but reality.

5. Snookie, the New Jersey shore item. Who, where, how, when, did she become an American icon. No more comment.

6. Mel Gibson....used to like him and his movies, but where has his head moved into? Mel, go to Alice Springs, absorb the Australian sun, relax, and rebuild your career. Don't take Snookie with you; she doesn't where Australia is.

7. Glenn Beck...this guy was a Phoenix disk jockey who got up tight around ratings time. In fact, he called the wife of a dj competitor on the air and chastised her for having a miscarriage. Hey, he needs serious psychiatric intervention and preferably a hot lead enema to straighten him out.

Enough....ranted and raved...got it out of my system...still haven't got over the Nixon deal, but that's another blog subject.

Over and Out....oh, support Dave Rabbit....Google that name.

Equivocators Abound!

Returning to common sense is often difficult for those who enjoy illusionary remarks and fantasy world ideas.  What struck this writer other than the 47 Senators who endorsed the Iranian letter was those who criticized the President for not loving America.

Rudy Giuiliani is an interesting case resembling more Marvin the Martian or perhaps Foghorn Leghorn's little guy. Giuliano's background includes being married 3 times, parading his mistress in front of his then wife and children and best of all avoiding the draft through 5 deferments.  One must question if he was raised this way or just decided to go over to the gray side on a few occasions.  Regardless, the question must be posed whether he loves America or not.

Rush Limbaugh is one whom an entire book could be published based on his fantasy rantings and outright equivocations.  Limbaugh came of draft age during the height of the Vietnam War in 1969.  He immediately enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University, but flunked out. Selective Service System records show that Limbaugh was classified as 1-Y (qualified for service only in time of [declared] war or national emergency) on 24 November 1970, which effectively ended his draft eligibility and ensured that he would not be called for service. He comes from an influential Missouri family which includes federal judges and prosecutors. Limbaugh's grandfather was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, and the Federal Courthouse in Limbaugh's hometown, Cape Girardeau, is named after him.  Putting family influence rapidly into play developed into a quick visit to his physician.  The doctor found an inoperable pilonidal cyst and issued a letter which Rush ran to his draft board with.  Interestingly enough, Rush's father possessed the same malady, but served honorably during WWII.  The board hurriedly reclassified Limbaugh to 1-Y and the Chicken Hawk was relieved. Later Rush claimed he had both a pilonidal cyst and a "football knee" as disqualifying factors for service, but his high school stated Limbaugh only played 1 year with no injuries recalled.  The larger point is Rush did not have a physical examination by a physician at the Armed Forces Entry and Examination Service (AFEES) which is mandatory prior to reclassification from his 1-A.  Limbaugh appears to have used family influence to avoid this juncture and let the Selective Service Board accept his doctor statement as the gospel.  The draft was notorious for accepting minor and middle physical and psychological problems in many of their inductees.  Undoubtedly, Rush would have been inducted if he had followed lawful AFEES mandating a complete physical examination where he could have presented the letter to a military/contract doctor.  Undoubtedly, he would be declared fully eligible for the military and then his draft board would be notified. Limbaugh took the influential way out, but there is another question.

The booking photos of "Jeff Christie", Limbaugh's pseudonym while working in Pittsburgh, show Limbaugh was arrested in 1974 for soliciting an undercover police officer posing as a transvestite for sexual favors, pandering,  No, it isn't just an "unfounded rumor," but actually happened.  Later in 2009, Limbaugh was again arrested on numerous drug and doctor shopping charges.  He was given one year probation on these indictments and immediately flew to the Dominican Republic for relaxation which is unusual for felony arrests.

Limbaugh has been married four times and his former spouses testify they lived separately from him. Regardless, one must ask if he was raised this way or just decided to cave in to often offensive remarks to gain more listeners.  His abrasive style cost him over 2700 sponsors when activist group began campaigns to get consumers to notify various companies of Limbaugh's offensive remarks.  One must pose the question whether he loves America or just the color of green.

Bill O'Reilly is another marvelous case of bluster and outright equivocation.  He talks of his blue collar upbringing, but again this is pure fantasy.  His father was a certified public accountant with CalTex, an oil company and mother a physical therapist; both well paying positions.  O'Reilly never lived in Levittown, but in a upper middle class neighborhood, Westbury, Long Island.  He often mentions his father's salary topping off at $35,000 which is $92,000 in today's economy.  This placed him in the top 10% of 1980 wage earners meaning O'Reilly was hardly a proletarian struggling to make it.  Young O'Reilly went off to Marist College after registering for the draft in 1968, but then scampered away to Oxford in England for two years.  He returned to Marist, graduated, and found himself classified 1-A, ready for induction, lottery number 71.  All of a sudden, there was a job offer teaching in Florida and automatic draft exemption.

Lets get something straight:  Bill O'Reilly was never in combat for this is a legend in his own mind.    His scandalous past equivocations have been dissected in the media much to Bill's chagrin.  However, the episode of El Salvadorian massacre by American trained El Salvador Army troops at El Mezote has not been examined.  Their is some speculation O'Reilly used his reporting to coverup the El Mezote episode which is a greater issue.  Regardless, Bill always seems to blow up his past to garner attention and sympathy; the hell with journalistic standards.  The Great Bloviator is protected by Faux News who argue he is an entertainer, not a news person.  Bollocks!  He needs to be harshly disciplined for his harmful antics.

Let us not forget Billy's two legal antics....the Great Bloviator was accused in a sexual harassment suit and paid out nearly $15 million. Read it here:   http://thesmokinggun.com/documents/funny/oreilly-hit-sex-harass-suit. Billy  initially screamed he was being shook down, but quickly changed his mind when Andrea Macklin produced some tapes of him.  In addition, Bill was accused four years ago of allegedly bribing a Long Island police department to fire a detective dating his spouse then separated.  It got ugly just like his divorce and you can read about it here: http://gawker.com/5834808/how-bill-oreilly-tried-to-get-his-wifes-boyfriend-investigated-by-the-cops.  Now Bill's 16 year old daughter is accusing him of abusing her Mother.  It never ends with the Great Bloviator!! Check it out here:http://www.addictinginfo.org/2015/05/18/bill-oreillys-daughter-testifies he-dragged-her-mom-down-a-staircase-by-the-neck-video/.  One must question whether he loves America or just the legends he spins to be important.

Sarah Palin is another who created her own myth.  She writes of family values and all that entails.  Her son was arrested for vandalizing FORTY-TWO (42) school buses and Sarah hurried went to his defense.  Palin convinced the prosecutor and court to let him enlist in lieu of indictment and probably conviction.  Bristol's story is well known except for fact she had sex with the guy for over four years before becoming pregnant. To her credit, she stated the Bush Administration's emphasis on curtailing sex education in public schools in lieu of teaching NO SEX at all was wrong.  Then Bristol did a 360 degree turn advocating sexual abstinence and eradicating evil sex ed courses.  Willow has had numerous run-ins with law enforcement with a trail of traffic tickets and speculation of drug involvement.  Both she and Bristol were notorious for a Facebook clash with a guy they both labeled publicly as a "Fag," and other disparaging names.  The family has been involved in bar fights, shouting matches and other incidents which hardly reflect family values and Christian leanings advocated by Sarah.  In fact, Sarah's predilection towards money and more wealth is hardly an admired value.  Again, one must question whether she loves America or justthe crisp sound of US currency being plopped down.

Wake up America!  These are only a few of those echoing simplistic, and at times stupid, solutions to very complex problems America faces.  We are at a crossroads where there is either a plunge into right wing fantasy, another war, social net destruction, etc. or a turn towards common sense re-instituting a true democracy. Extreme right wing philosophy and right wing pseudo-Christian dominionism is wracking upon our nation thus creating a rise in racism, antisemitism, sexism and downright deviation away from tolerance and respect. Its time to point these people to the door and reestablish sanity before more violence such as Ferguson, Missouri, occurs.  Its our choice whether to go into the breach again with darkness or return to a more progressive sunlight.

What Not To Wear

I’ve decided to let Craig have a break from posting so he can get some work done. Besides, I’ve had something on my mind that is worth mentioning. I think.

It has become increasingly interesting at the variety of exercise clothing participants wear to class. For the most part, they are dressed comfortable, in easy to move in outfits. Some have outfits that match – right down to the shoes, and some could care less how ‘in style’ they are – they just came to get a great workout. Then there are the ‘others’. You know who you are – the ones in the low cut tops, the shorts with the really wide legs, the shorts with no legs at all, you get the picture. For us, it makes it difficult when we are watching for form because we don’t want to appear like we are staring at something we shouldn’t! Does anyone else have this problem?

There has also been the rare occasion where someone has forgotten his or her shoes. I had one lady work out in her hiking boots! Craig has had to work out in his socks before. He would have had to work out barefoot but I went to the local drugstore and bought him socks! He has also forgotten his shorts and had to workout in his jeans. Not very comfortable.

Personally, I am one of those who likes to look somewhat put together. (I confess – I have Nikes that match my outfits…) My biggest issue is finding clothes to wear. Right now I teach 6 classes per week – that will increase to 11 in a couple of weeks so I need plenty of outfits! Being one of those who are vertically challenged, it makes it especially hard to buy pants that don’t need to be hemmed. I love Capri’s’, but on me they always come down to my ankles making me look like someone chopped off my legs. Tops are another issue. I’m short waisted so most tops on me are too long – leaving a wad of material at my middle. And then, exercise clothing is soooo expensive! And unfortunately, if you buy cheap stuff, it doesn’t last. Thank goodness I don’t have a problem with shoes….

It is great to see Body Pump clothing getting away from so much red and black. Don’t get me wrong – I DO like it, but it is nice to have some variety. However, I can’t afford to keep up with all the BP latest fashions.

Men don’t seem to have the same problems women do. When Craig went shopping for his BP attire, he got everything he needed at one store. I on the other hand have to go from store to store – and when you live in a small town with not a lot of stores, your choices are even smaller. Most everything looks all the same – black or navy pants, solid or print tank style top. I have seen some great websites offering cool clothes – but I generally like to try things on before I buy.

So, I guess for now I will continue to wear my same outfits. (Maybe a new pair of sneakers would brighten up an old outfit) Or maybe I’ll call Stacey and Clinton from TLC’s “What Not To Wear”!

Fear Is A Great Motivator

Everyone is motivated by something to get in shape. Ours just happens to be fear.

We don't want to look like this. What motivates you?
