y FLAMING PEA PODS I SAY By www.cakewrecks.com Published On :: Thu, 07 May 2020 13:00:00 +0000 May is "Homeschooling Awareness Month", parents, which I'm sure you'll find as deliciously ironic as I do... by maybe next August. Here's one from every home-schooled kid to their parent/teachers right now: SORRYAlso maybe focus on spelling and grammar this week? And here's one from every homeschooling parent to their kids after you all survive the rest of the school year: Jejus is so proud of y'all. If you're feeling left out, don't worry; it's also "Flexible Work Arrangement Week" (BAHAHAHAHAAA) and Mental Health Month, which at the moment go together like two peas in a pod. That's on fire. “This is fine.” “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE” [...] I don't actually know what that is, but it sure seems ominous.I'm glad at least one baker understands the importance of talking things out through all this: Advantages of cake therapy:1) Cake doesn't judge 2) Cake always listens3) Cake tastes delicious when your session time is upOr hey, let the cake do the talking for you! If you don't identify with this right now you're either not quarantined with anyone, or yesterday you were the annoying one. :p Thanks to Kendra W., Jan M., Lesley G., Renee R., Megan W., Leigh M., & Hank C. for proving all snarky house notes should be made using cake.*****Speaking of house notes, whether you're feeling snarky or sweet, this listing has funny note options for just about every conceivable situation: Nifty Note PadsEach pad has 50 tear-off sheets, and the checkbox options are a riot to read through. *****And from my other blog, Epbot: Full Article

And if I could get every one of you moms out there a cake of your own, it would be this one: Awwww YEEEEAH.Happy weekend, everyone! Thanks to Cathy S., Laura F., Deanna N., Carol D., Ginny H., Raziel P., Anony M., Breanne R., Barbara R., Chrissy D., Jonna S., & Cathi C. for the cakes only a wrecker could love.*****Feeling like you could write a better message for Mom than these bakers? Then here's a cute way to do it: Message Capsules In A Bottle("Infmetry" is the name of the manufacturer. I know, it confused me, too. :p)This little bottle has 90 note capsules inside, each held closed with a gold ring. You can write 90 things you love about Mom, then have her open one per day for the next few months! This size is $13, or you can get smaller bottles of 25 capsules each for $10. y roast chicken with schmaltzy cabbage By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Wed, 15 Apr 2020 13:50:46 +0000 I didn’t know I needed a new roast chicken in my life when Helen Rosner, the New Yorker’s roving food correspondent and all-around fascinating person, posted on her Instagram a few weekends ago that she didn’t have her usual vegetables to put under her roast chicken so she was using cabbage instead. Yet the very next evening, so was I, plus twice since then, and likely one more time before this week is out and I have a hunch I will not be alone. Rosner won a James Beard award for an essay I still routinely quote from to my kids (“but chicken tenders have no terroir!” because we live in opposite land where they don’t like them but I do — but that’s a whole other blog entry) because it delights me so much. A year ago she nearly broke the internet when she said she likes to use a hairdryer to get the crispiest chicken skin. All I’m saying is that when Rosner talks about chicken, I find good reason to tune in. Read more » Full Article 5 Ingredients or Fewer Budget Cabbage Chicken Gluten-Free Recipes Weeknight Favorite
y layered yogurt flatbreads By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Thu, 30 Apr 2020 15:48:18 +0000 For many years I’ve been fascinated by variations on yeast-free yogurt flatbread recipes (sometimes called yeast-free naan) that follow a loose formula of a cup of yogurt, a couple cups of flour, some salt, fat, and water. Sometimes there’s baking powder, sometimes there’s not. It’s kneaded together as you would a yeasted bread dough and left to rest for about 30 minutes, sometimes an hour, during which a transformation occurs and the dough becomes springy and smooth and very lovely to work with, like a freshly-opened can of Play-Doh. Once rolled thin, they’re pan-fried, and look, they’re fiiine. But they’re never as good as I want them to be. Read more » Full Article 5 Ingredients or Fewer Bread Recipes

y Have you been to the Garden of Eden? It's in Bedford By www.theguardian.com Published On :: 2020-05-09T10:00:53Z The strange tale of how paradise came to be located in a Victorian semi not far from the town centreThat the Garden of Eden remains absent from travel bucket lists is, perhaps, unsurprising. Unlike El Dorado or Lyonesse, however, its location is no mystery. It even has an address: 12 Albany Road, Bedford. And while the Victorian house is modest in size, its garden does boast a cosy tearoom, and how it came to be there is as surprising as its geography.More than 200 years ago, religious prophets – spiritual gurus of their day – attracted loyal followers and occasionally courted scandal. One such was Joanna Southcott from Devon, who in 1814, at the age of 64, declared herself pregnant with the new messiah. The baby failed to materialise and Southcott died a short while later, but not before presenting a mysterious locked box to her followers. It was to be opened in a time of national crisis, and would bring peace and prosperity on Earth – but only if 24 bishops prayed over it for three days. Bishops being busy fellows, Southcott’s box remained unopened and passed down through her followers until it came to the attention of Mabel Barltrop. Continue reading... This is interesting new territory for many teachers. But there are thousands and thousands of teachers and pupils already learning remotely, in virtual schools – can they offer insights? At a virtual school, lessons are delivered in line with each person’s personalised curriculum. Exactly as you would expect in a physical school space, pupils are taught how to interact with teachers, their peers and lesson content using whiteboard technology, quizzes, voice and video as well as receiving and sending assignment tasks. How should you introduce yourself to a new class, if you are meeting them online for the first time? Does the jam or cream go on a scone first (and how do you pronounce scone)? Does pineapple belong on a pizza? And should your Heinz ketchup be kept in the fridge? (For the record: jam then cream; rhyme it with “gone”; certainly not; and yes, definitely. Glad we cleared that up.)But few foods have triggered so many lengthy debates as the satisfyingly saucy baked bean. A British icon, the fierce loyalty these delicious legumes stir up is unparalleled. Which is the best bread to put them on? Is it OK to eat them cold? And should they really be touching other food on the plate? We’re here to solve these saucy conundrums once and for all. y Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye at 50: a novel that speaks to our times By www.theguardian.com Published On :: 2020-05-09T07:00:50Z Set after the Great Depression, Morrison’s heartbreaking debut explores beauty and finds joy where there really should be noneThis week, amazingly, I read a book. Just the one, though – let’s not get excited. I suspect I was only able to do so because I wasn’t reading for pleasure, but because I’ve been asked to write a foreword for it. The book I read was The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, a novel about a young, dark-skinned girl growing up in the US after the Great Depression who believes herself to be ugly; she wishes for blue eyes in the hope that they will make her beautiful. I had started to read it a few years ago, but was so overwhelmed that I had to put it down. This time, I knew, contractually, that I was going to tackle it head on.Usually I blitz through a book. But it’s Toni isn’t it, so you’ve got to gear yourself up for heartbreak, some trauma, and also to learn some things about yourself, and human nature, that you’d rather not be faced with. If she did one thing impeccably, it was holding a mirror up to society and saying: “Look at how we live. Are you proud of that?” And the answer cannot always be yes. Continue reading...
